* COMBINED BOOK AND SLATE.
No. 440,037. Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
Z'Jcomxkow' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM T. JAMISON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS A.
GASAWVAY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED BOOK AND SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,037, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed September 27 1889. Serial No. 32 (N0 modem T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. J AMISON, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Book and Slate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My present invention is for an improvement on the patent issued to me on the 13th day of March, 1888, No. 379,469.
My invention consists of a combined book and slate in which the slate may be readily attached at will to the book by the user of the same, and thus avoid the purchasing of anew book by the student or other person when it is desired to have the slate in conjunction therewith; and my invention consists of features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a plan view of my improved device. Fig. II is a transverse section taken on line 11 II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a detail perspective showing the manner of placing the cover on the back.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the removable book-cover with the slates 2 attached thereto. I attach one of the slates to the right-hand leaf of the bookcover, as' shown in the drawings.
3 represents an additional slate -bearin g leaf that is attached to the side of the righthand leaf of the book-cover by means of a web 4:, which allows the leaf 3 to be folded over upon the cover when the slate is not in use.
5 represents a book with its lids 6 7 and back 8.
9 represents a pocket in the right-hand leaf of the book-cover into which one of the lids of the book may be thrust, as shown in Fig. III, when it is desired to attach the cover and slate to the book. This pocket is formed by making that portion of the cover double, the sections being far enough apart to admit the lid of a book through an opening 10. (See Figs. I and II.)
'Iheleaves of the cover are connected to each other by the usual back or web 11. The lefthand leaf of the coveris providedwith apocket obviates the danger of straining or injuring the back.
The section 13 has its inner side out into a convex form 14:, the center of the same being nearer the web of the back than the edges are, the advantage of the same being that the person desiring to place the cover on the book may raise the section 13 up at the center and start the lid into the pocket Without tearing the section where it is secured at its ends, and also guiding the lid so that it will not come in contact with the edge of the sec tion at or near its ends. (See Fig. III.)
15 represents a slate-bearing leaf attached to the lower end of the left-hand leaf of the book-cover by a web 16. This leaf may also be folded in upon the cover when the slate is not in use. The slate-leaf attached to the end of the book-cover leaf may be attached to the side, if desired, or the one attached to the side may be attached to the end of the leaf without departing from the spirit of my invention. In placing the cover on the book, the right-hand lid is thrust into its position, as shown in Fig. III, and the left-hand lid is then bent back far enough to pass into the pocket 12. As it is impossible to place the cover 011 the book Without first bending the lids back into the position shown in Fig. III, it will be seen that the cover would remain on the book with any ordinary usage of the same.
By the use of my improvement I can attach a slate to any book and thus avoid the expense and trouble of having the same specially manufactured, as would be the case in using the device described in my former patent.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a removable book-cover bearing a slated surface and pockets in said cover for inserting the IOC lids of a book, one of said pockets extending substantially the full Width of one of the leaves of the cover, and the other pocket extending substantially one-half of the Width of the other leaf of the cover, substantially as described, and for the purpose, set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a removable book-oover bearing a slated surface, and pockets in said cover for inserting the lids of abook, one of said pockets extending a portion of the width of one of the leaves of the cover, and having the section 13 over the pocket in a convex form, in order that the lid of the book may be readily entered into said pocket, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a combined book and slate, the com bination of the book 5, having lids 6 7, a removable cover 1, having slate-bearing leaves 3 and 15, pockets 9 and 12 in said cover, and a section 13 over one of said pockets, having its inner edge out in a convex form, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. A book-cover consisting of a back 11, a pocket 9, havinga slate, web 4, leaf 3, having a slate, a pocket-section 13, Web 16, and leaf 15, havinga slate, substantially as described.
WILLIAM T. JAMISON.
