HENRY C. MILLER, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.-
BC JOK AND STAND.
Application filed December 22, 1914. Serial No. 878,512.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, HENRY C. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books and Stands; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification its object being to combine the binder of a loose leaf posting ledger or other book with standmembers that may be readily put in and out of working position, said stand-members being preferably detachable from the back of the binder and adjustable in their connection with the same so that the expansion of said binder and the angle of thecovers of the open book may be varied to suit the user of said book, said stand-members being adaptable to binders of various capacities. The combination of the standmembers with a book-binder as aforesaid, permits the entire back of the book to rest directly upon a desk, and said stand-members prevent tipping of said book and spilling of leaves therefrom.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a cross-section view of a loose leaf binder, book-covers hinged thereto, and a pair of detachable stand-members in adjustable union with the binder, the plane of the section being indicated by line 11 in the next described illustration; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal sectionof the binder indicatedby line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a sectional view of a detail of my invention on an en larged scale; Fig. l, a plan view of a fragment of one of the stand-members, and Fig. 5, an elevation of a fragment of one of the angle rails of the binder.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 5 indicates a loose-leaf binder extensible or otherwise, the details of construction of such binder being immaterial, so far as my invention is concerned, except that each of the opposite longitudinal angle rails 6 thereof has its outer bead 7'provi'ded with an angular guide-slot, and the back of said rail is provided with a series of parallel slots by which to form a rack, said slot and rack being midway of the ends of said rail. Riveted or otherwise suitably fastened on each rail 6 of the binder, over the rack thereof and matching the slot in said rail, is a guide-plate S. 'The slot and adjacent guide-plate of each rail has a central offset to provide play-space for a pivotal spring-controlled latch element of a standmember hereinafter more particularly described.
Eaoh stand-member 9 is a partly horizontal and partly upwardly bent arm of suitable thickness and width designed to have the horizontal portion thereof engage the slot and guide-plate with which a rail of the' binder is provided. Depending from the horizontal portion of the rail adjacent to an outer lower bend of the same is a deskopposing button 10, and pivotally supported in a slot of said horizontal portion of said arm is a latch 11 having the outer end thereof provided with an upper knob 12. The under side of the knob-end of the latch is opposed by a spring 13 riveted or otherwise suitably fastened to the horizontal portion of the stand-member, and said latch is engageable with any notch of the rack with which a rail of the binder is provided, such an engagement being shown in Fig. 8. Hence the detachable stand-member has adjustable engagement with said rail and the guide therewith, the latch being lifted out of engagement with the rack of the rail by pressure upon the knob of said latch against spring resistance.
In Fig. 4 it is shown that the pivots ll of each latch have dovetailed ends set fast in corresponding notches of slot-edges of a binder-rail, and the curvature of the upwardly extending portions of the stand- Inembers is such as to provide for the opening of the book between said stand-members when they are connected to opposite'rails of a binder, as is shown in Fig. 1, their upper ends being stops opposing the book covers 15 hinged to, said binder. The-under buttons 10 of the stand-members support said stand-members parallel to an opposing desk when in connection with the binder-rails, whereby the binderor back of the book is held on the level to provide for proper opening of said book.
Vhile I have shown and described a preferred form of my invention, said invention as herein claimed, extends to any form of stand-members combined with the rails of a book-binder, whether they be detachable or in permanent connection with the binder the binder to extend laterally therefrom, its
remainder being a stop by which to limit opening of one of said covers.
2. A book-binder having covers in hingeconnection therewith, and opposite standmembers each having a rigid horizontally extending portion thereof in laterally adjustable connection with the binder, its remainder being a stop by which to limit opening of one of said covers.
3. A book-binder having covers in hingeconnection therewith, and opposite standmembers each having a rigid horizontally extending portion thereof in detachable connection with the binder to extend laterally therefrom, its remainder being a stop by which to limit opening of one of said covers.
4. A book-binder having covers in hingeconnection therewith, and opposite standmembers each having a rigid horizontally extending portion thereof in laterally adjustable detachable connection with the binder to extend laterally therefrom, its remainderbeing a stop by which to limit openand guide, and a pivotal spring-controlled ing of one of said covers.
5. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails, and a member in connection with each of said rails, said member forming a stand for the binder and the book carried thereby.
6. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails, and a member having laterally adjustable connection with each of said rails, said member forming a stand for the binder and the book carried thereby.
7. A'book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails, and a member having detachable connection with each of said rails, said member forming a stand for the binder and the book carried thereby.
8. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails, and a member having laterally adjustable and detachable connection with each of said rails, said member forming a stand for the binder and the book carried thereby.
9. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails each slotted intermediate of its ends and provided with an inner guide matching the slot, and a stand-member engageable with the slot and guide of each of said rails.
10. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails each slotted intermediate of its ends and provided with an inner transverse guide matching the slot, a stand-memher having sliding engagement with said slot and guide, and means by which the stand member is detachably secured in the engagement aforesaid.
11. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails each slotted intermediate of its ends and provided with an inner transverse guide matching t-he slot, at stand-member having adjustable engagement with said slot and guide, and means by. whichthe stand-member is detachably secured in adjusted position.
12. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails each slotted intermediate of its ends and provided with an inner transverse rack, a guide covering the rack and matching the slot of each rail, a stand-member having sliding engagement. with said slot latch associated with the stand-member for engagement with said rack.
13. A book-binder having opposite longitudinal rails, stand-members having horizontal portions thereof in detachable sliding engagement with the rails transversely of the same, and a button depending from the horizontal portion of each standmember.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. MILLER.
