HAND OR BOOK REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,254, dated June 18, 1895.

To aid whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HEINRICH CHRISTIAN THIEMANN, residing at Hamburg, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand or Book Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a rest designed to afford a support for the hand of a person writing on the lower lines of a thick ledger or other book. The device is also adapted to be used as a support for holding a book in an approximately upright position while reading or copylllL'.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rest, showing it in use as a hand-support. Fig.2 is a similar view with the plate a turned over. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rest when constituting a book-support; and Fig. 4, a vertical section on line at 4, Fig. 3.

The rest is composed essentially of two plates at, Z), arranged at right angles to each other and connected by a triple hinge c. On that end of the plate I), which is connected to plate a, there is secured a smaller plate (1, which is of greater thickness than plate 19. The plate dis provided with a groove f, adapted to receive and hold the inner edge ct, of plate a. Within a bore of plate d, there is secured a catch h, surrounded by spring g, and provided with a folding finger i.

\Vhen the apparatus is to be used as a hand rest (Figs. 1 and 2), the plate I), is placed between the closed leaves of the book, while the plate a, may be folded either upon the left hand open leaf A (Fig. 1), or the right hand open leaf A (Fig. 2). Thus the plate a will form a convenient rest for the hand.

When the apparatus is to be used as a book rest (Figs. 3 and 4), the plate b, is placed into a horizontal position and the plate a, is fitted with its lower edge a into the groove f, of plate d. The book is placed upon plate I), and

against plate a, and is held in its open position by the finger i, which is swung upward to bear against one of the open leaves.

What I claim is- 1. A book rest composed of two plates placed at right angles to each other, and of a connecting triple hinge, substantially as specified.

2. The combination in a book rest of plates a, b, with a connecting hinge c, a grooved plate cl, secured to plate b, and adapted to receive the edge of plate a, a spring catch engaging plate d, and a folding finger secured to such catch, substantially as specified.
