WITNESSES INVENTOH ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented September 27, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINATION BOOK-HOLDER AND WRITING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,842, dated September 2'7, 1904.
Application filed April 23, 1904.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. BELLAMY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Book- Holders and Writing-Tables, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for holding large books, and especially ledgers and other account-books, whereby a book of this class may be conveniently held at the desired or any preferred angle, a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is designed to be placed on a desk or other support and by means of which a ledger or other accountbook may be properly held, a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which also may be used as an ordinary writing-table when placed on a desk or other support.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved combination book-holder and writing-table; Fig. 2, a section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 or on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4:; and Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention I provide a main rectangular frame a, composed of parallel side members a and parallel end members a and a, and said frame in the form of construction shown is square; but the same may be oblong, if desired.
Hinged to the main frame at b is a supplemental frame 0, composed of parallel side members 0 and one end member 0 the end of the supplemental frame where it is hinged at 6 being open.
Within the main frame a and pivoted or hinged to the opposite sides thereof, as shown at (Z, is a yoke shaped support d which Serial No. 204,496. (No model.)
ranges transversely of the main frame and fits between the sides thereof and is provided at its opposite sides with pins (Z3, adapted to fit in recesses (Z in the opposite side portions a of the main frame and also in notches or recesses 0 in the supplemental frame 0, and by means of this support the supplemental frame 0 may be held in a raised position and at any suitable angle with reference to the main frame a.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the device is shown as involving only the main frame a, the supplemental frame a hinged thereto at b, and the support d but in the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the opposite side portions of the supplemental frame 0 are provided with supplemental hinged members a, which are also rectangular in form and are hinged to the supplemental frame 0 at 6 and the supplemental hinged members 0 are adapted to lie flat on the supplemental frame 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or to be turned outwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The supplemental hinged members a are employed inconnection with the supplemental frame 0 when books of unusual size are to be supported; but these hinged members 0 may also be used at any time, as they do not materially interfere with the use of the device in connection with ledgers or other large accountbooks of any size.
When it is desired to support a ledger or other account-book on this device, the supplemental frame 0 is raised into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the book is placed thereon in an open position with the central back portion of the book fitting between'the sides of the supplemental frame 0 or between the hinged members 6, if the latter are employed, while the lower end of the book fits in the main frame and strikes against or rests against the transverse member (6 and the book is firmly held or prevented from slipping in any direction. If the members 6, which are hinged to the supplemental frame 0, are employed, however, they are always turned outwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when in use, as this position facilitates the operation of the device in holding a book of any size.
The bottom of the main frame is also provided with a plate f when the device is intended as a writing-table, and in order to use said device for this purpose the parts are placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the said device is turned over so that the bottom plate f will be uppermost, and said plate forms in this position a writing-table, and the device with the parts thereof in this position may be placed on an ordinary desk or other support, as will be readily understood.
It will be observed that the support 612 is adapted to fold within the sides a of the main frame when not in use, and a supplemental frame 0 will rest squarely on said main frame when the support d is in this position.
My improvement is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described, comprising a main frame, a yoke-shaped support pivoted between the opposite sides thereof and a supplemental frame hinged to the opposite sides of the main frame and open at one end, and adapted to be held at an angle to the main frame by said support, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a main rectangular frame, a supplemental frame open at one end and the opposite sides of which are hinged to the opposite sides of the main frame, and a yoke-shaped support pivoted to the sides of the main frame and provided at its opposite sides with pins adapted to enter recesses in the opposite sides of the main frame and also in the opposite sides of the supplemental frame, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a main rectangular frame, a supplemental frame open at one end and the opposite sides of which are hinged to the opposite sides of the main frame, and a yoke-shaped support pivoted between the sides of the main frame and provided at its opposite sides with pins adapted to enter recesses in the opposite sides of the main frame and also in the opposite sides of the supplemental frame, said main frame being provided at the bottom with a plate or board by which it is closed, substantially as shown and described.
4:. Adevice of the class described, comprising a main rectangular frame, a supplemental frame open at one end and the opposite sides of which are hinged to the opposite sides of the main frame, a yoke-shaped support pivoted between the sides of the main frame and provided at its opposite sides with pins adapted to enter recesses in the opposite sides of the main frame and also in the opposite sides of the supplemental frame, said main frame being provided at the bottom with a plate or board by which it is closed, and said supplemental frame being provided with members which are hinged to the opposite sides thereof and are adapted to rest thereon or to be turned outwardly, substantially as shown and described.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a main rectangular frame, a supplemental frame open at one end and the sides of which are hinged to the opposite sides of the main frame, a yoke-shaped support pivoted between the sides of the main frame and provided at its opposite sides with pins adapted to enter notches or recesses in the main frame and in the opposite sides of the supplemental frame, and supplemental members hinged to the opposite sides of the supplemental frame-and adapted to rest thereon or to be turned outwardly, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day of April, 1904.
WILLIAM D. BELLAMY.
