COMBINED PAPER AND BOOK HOLDER.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application filed January 13, 1905. Serial No. 240,975.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN PAsHLEY,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Paper and Book Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object is to provide a device whereby papers may be held upon a surface, said device being so constructed and connected to the surface as to be raised and secured at an incline for supporting the papers or a book.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book-su port and of the combined paper and book 0 amp open in operative position. Fig. 2- is a central ongitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the combined paper and book clamp and of the book-support closed. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the book-support open, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the comblned paper and book clamp open and of the book-support depressed.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a baseboard which is provided upon its upper surface, near one end thereof, with the two clips B, to which are pivotally secured the rods or arms C of the bail D, which is mounted in the clips E, secured upon the back of the book support F. The booksupport is provided upon its rear side at the lower end with an arm G, which is adapted to engage the projection H or the lip J of a catch K, pivoted to the base-board, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. By this means greater or less inclination can be given the support.
In order to keep the rods 0 in alinement and in their clips, I provide the bar L, which has its terminals slidably connected to the rods (l. Secured to the base-board in front of the book-support are two clips M, in which is mounted the double spring-clamp N, which consists of the members 0 and P, the memher 0 being adapted to engage the forward portion of the support F and hold it in the desired position when inclined, or, if necessary, to hold the book upon the. support in an inclined position. A spring tenslon is given to these members by means of the coils Q. When the support F is in the position shown in Fig. 5, the member 0 rests flat upon the board beneath the support. The member P of the clamp is provided with the inclined arms R, which incline upwardly to a point S, where the brace T is secured thereto, terminating in the downwardly-inclined end U. By this construction a stack of papers can be placed upon the board and the clamp will readily accommodate itself to the height of the same by reason of the inclination of the arms thereof. When the device is out of use, the members assume the position shown in Fig. 3, the member P extending forward and in front of the lower end of the book-support, while the member 0 is substantially covered by said support. Mounted upon the board upon one side of the clamping and supporting devices are cli s V, in which a rule may be mounted, while upon the opposite side are clips W for the reception of a pen or pencil.
From the foregoing description it is evident that I provide a device of this character which facilitates studies by always having the copy in view and the paper in con venient position to jot down the notesthat is, the book can be held by the support and read while the student jots down upon the sheets of paper held by the member P of the clamping device, the member 0 holding the book firmly upon the support.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport connected to said base-board, and a combined paper and book clamp secured to the baseboard in front of said support, the book-holding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support.
2. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a baseboard, of a booksupport connected to said base-board, and a combined paper and book clamp constructed of a single piece of material and secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support.
3. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of abooksupport connected to said base-board, and a combined paper and book clamp removably secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support.
4. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport pivotally connected to said baseboard, and a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to en gage said book-support.
5. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of abooksupport connected to said base-board, a com bined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the bookholding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support, and means for limiting backward movement of said support when engaged by the book-holdin portion of said combined paper and book cIamp.
6. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport connected to said base-board, a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the bookholding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support, and means engaging the lower edge of said support for limiting backward movement thereof when engaged by the bookholdin portion of said combined paper and book 0 amp.
7. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport connected to the base and provided with a projecting arm or finger toward its lower end, a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support, and means engaging the arm or finger of the book-support for limiting backward movement thereof when engaged by the book-holdin portion of said combined paper and book 0 amp.
8. In combined paper and book holders,
the combination with abase-board, of abooksupport connected to said base-board, a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the bookholding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support, and a spring-catch constructed and arranged to enga 'e the lower edge of said support to limit bac ward movement of the latter when engaged by the book-holding portion of said combined paper and book clamp.

In combined paper ano book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport connected to said base-board, a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the bookholding portion, only, of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support, and a pivoted spring-catch constructed and arranged to engage the lower edge of said support to limit backward movement thereof when engaged by thebook-holding portion of said combined paper and book clamp.
11. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of abooksupport connected to said base-board, and a spring-actuated combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of.
said su port, the book-holding portion, only, of sai clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support.
12. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport connected to said base board, and a combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support and the paper-holding portion of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage paper, &c., disposed on the base-board.
13. In combined paper and book holders, the combination with a base-board, of a booksupport pivotally connected to said baseboard, a spring-actuated combined paper and book clamp secured to the base-board in front of said support, the book-holding portion of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage said book-support and the paper-holding portion of said clamp being constructed and arranged to engage paper, &c., disposed on the base-board, and a pivoted sprin -catch constructed and arranged to engage 1e lower edge of said support to limit backward movement thereof when engaged by the book-holding portion of said combined paper and book clamp.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
