NOTEBOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921 Application filed February 5, 1920. Serial No. 356,518.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that J AMES SHEEAN, a citizen of the United States of Amer'ca, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, has inventednew and useful- Improvements in Notebook-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a note-book holder and line indicator adapted for use by copyists particularly in connection with a typewriting machine, but also designed for use as a means of holding a copy-book or loose sheets as a tablet in taking notes or preparing manuscript, and in that connection being suitable for arrangement flat on a desk or to be held on the lap or in the hand; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination 'of parts of which apreferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder setup for use in holding a copybook in a substantially upright position.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Figs. 3 and l'are sectional views on the planes'indicated respectively by the lines 3-3 and H of Fi Fig. 5 is an edge view of the device folded for use on the desk or on the lap of the operator.
The device consists essentially of a base or board 10 provided with a folding easel support 11 of wire or rod pivotally connected with the base .or board at 12 and adapted to be disposed as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 at an angle to the plane of the board to support thelatter in a substantially upright position, the outward movement of the frame constituting the easel support or brace being limited by a flexible connection 13 consisting of a chain, tape or any equivalent thereof. The easel frame or base preferably comprises the side arms 14 and the transverse connecting bar 15, While the pivotal connection between said arms and the base or board 10 is provided by inturning the extremities of said arms to fit in sockets in the edges of the base or board, so that when'the brace is folded as indicated in Fig. 5 the side arms are adapted to lie substantially in the plane of the base or board. At its lower end said base in addition to the forwardly projectin ledge 16 is prdvided with depending resilient knobs or cushions 17 of rubber or the like forming buttons to bear upon the surface of a desk orthe like to avoid scratching the same and at the same time prevent the structure from moving or sliding to such an extent as to be objectionable, and when the easel brace 11 is folded the bottom cross bar 15 thereof snaps behind said buttonsas indicated in Fig. 5, to lock said frame in the plane of the base or board to adapt the device to be arranged flat upon the surface of the desk or to be held on the lap of the operator in taking notes.
Secured to the base or board near its upper edge is a transversely extending clamping tongue 18 designed to engage the upper edge of the copy-book or a tablet or sheets of paper arranged upon the surface of the base while extending parallel with the left-hand edge of the base or board is a gage bar or rib 19 against which the adjacent edge of the book or of sheets of paper arranged on the surfaceof the base may be fitted to dispose the same in accurate parallelism with the base. Also mountedslidably upon the base preferably at its left-hand edge is a carrier block 20 having front and rear guide arms 21 and 22 of which the former bears and rides upon the guide bar or rib 19 while the latter is provided with a terminal hook23 for engaging andtraversing a guide rib 24 to time to indicate the successive lines of the copy for the convenience of the operator.
0 move the indicator arm from time to time without tending to disturb the arrangement of the copybook or sheet on the base the carrier block may be grasped and deflected either rearwardly or forwardly from the plane of the base or board so as to raise the free end of the indicator arm, whereupon the block may be slid parallel with the edge of the base to the desired adjustment.
1 Also obviously the carrier block with its attachments including the indicator arm may be entirely removed from the base or board, when not required for indicating llt from the holding rib 24. Thec'arrier may be replaced with equal facility by disposing it adjacent'to the edge of the base and snaplimiting the deflection of the latter from the plane of the base, said easel support having a transverse lower bar, and the base :being provided with yielding buttons at its lower edge forengagement by said transverse bar when the easel support is folded.
2. A copy'holder having a base and means for supporting the same in a substantially upright position, a clamp for securing copy upon the front surface of the base, front and rear guide ribs carried by the base parallel with one side edge thereof, a carrier ture.
block provided with front and rear spring arms for bearing contact respectively with said ribs, and a line indicator arm carried by said block.
3. A copy holder having a base and means for supporting the same in a substantially upright position, front and rear guide ribs arranged parallel with one side edge of the base, a carrier block provided with yielding front and rear arms for bearing contact respectively with said ribs, the rear arm having a terminal hook for engagement with therear rib to prevent accidental displacementiof the block, and a yielding line indicating arm carried by the said block and extending transversely of the surface of the ase.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signa- JAMES SHEEAN.
