Application March 5, 1947, Serial No. 732,523
1 Claim.
My present invention has for its object to provide a typists copy holder adapted to be set behind a typewriter comprising a base or standard which is held in place by the weight of the typewriter and a copy carrying portion extending up wardly therefrom which is foldable over the typewriter in an out of the way position when the typewriter is not in use and as the latter is either to be covered or moved into a compartment of a desk.
Another object of my invention is to provide a copy holder for typists comprising foldable parts to facilitate its being transported by the user and which is so arranged that one of the parts acts as a standard for supporting the other in an upright position on which typists notes may be mounted and when collapsed forms a convenient receptacle for holding note books, papers and the like.
To these and other ends my invention has for its object to provide further improvements in construction, all as will be fully described in the accompanying specification, the novel features thereof being set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a copy holder embodying my invention, the, parts being shown in their operative position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the copy holder collapsed in position for shipping, or for transportation by the user.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the device in an inoperative position with respect to a typewriting machine.
Similar reference characters in the several figures indicate similar parts.
An object of my invention is to provide a copy holder designed to carry the notes or material to be copied in the normal line of view of a typist which while well adapted for use by expert operators by virtue of its simple construction and therefore low cost of manufacture is especially adapted for students and use in schools for training purposes.
In carrying out my invention I provide a base or standard 5 and a copy holder section or panel 6. The standard is made of a single piece of sheet metal reinforced at its edges by inwardly folding marginal portions of the metal, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The standard is of a width substantially that of a typewriting machine and at its lower end has a forwardly projecting foot piece I of a width sufficient to fit beneath the rear of a typewriter frame, the weight of which UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
tion. The foot piece may be either at right angles to the standard or slightly less in the event it is desired to slightly slope it rearwardly with reference to a vertical plane. In height the standard is such that its upper end is somewhat above the paper guard, the tabulating bar, or whatever element on standard typewriters of difierent makes may occupy the highest position. At this point the width of the standard is made narrower to correspond to the width of the standard legal and letter size of business papers. The upper end of the standard is bent forwardly to form a narrow horizontal flange 8 carrying one member of a hinge.
The panel 6, forming the support for the typists notes, is likewise made of a single sheet of metal also reinforced by turning back its marginal edges. At its lower edge is a forwardly extending horizontal flange 9, coextensive with the flange 8, and which carries the companion hinge member, said hinge members being connected by a pintle It. In forming the flange 9 its forward edge is turned upwardly, as indicated by H, to provide a short ridge for retaining the lower edge of a sheet, or sheets, of paper resting on the flange 9. If desired a clip l2 may be slipped over one edge of the panel 6 for temporarily securing copy sheets and by moving it lengthwise of the panel the clip also serves as a line guide for the typist.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have illustrated the device in two different folded positions. In the first it will be noticed that the top of the panel 5 fits within the foot piece 1 thus making a convenient sized package for shipping in the first instance by the manufacturer, and for subsequent transportation by the user. In this position of adjustment the parts form a substantially rectangular box in which the user may place note books, papers and the like for carrying purposes. Figure 3 shows the device in a semi-collapsed position with the panel 6 folded over a typewriting machine which is a great convenience when a typewriter is not in use as it permits the latter to be covered with the usual shroud, or to be concealed in the usual compartment of a typewriter desk.
I claim:
In a typists copy holder, a flat upright sheet material standard adapted to stand behind a typewriter in close proximity thereto, an integral foot piece located at the bottom end-of said standard at substantially right angles thereto, said foot piece extending forward from the W111 fi y d the n d' p ve D0S1 standard in a manner to adapt it to extend beneath the rear foot pieces of a typewriter to be held in place by the weight of such typewriter, an integral first horizontal flange located at the top end of said standard at substantially right angles thereto, a sheet material panel member having integral therewith a second horizontal flange, a hinge connection between the two said horizontal flanges, said hinge adapting the standard and panel for folding with respect to one another,
said panel, standard and foot piece all being re- 19 inforced at their edge portions by inwardly folding marginal portions of the sheet material, and a ridge depending at substantially right angles from the second horizontal flange, said ridge serving to retain the lower end of papers placed against the panel member.
