BINDER OR HOLDER FOR SHEETS OR PADS.

To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, REINHOLD KRUM- MING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders or Holders for Sheets or Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in binders or holders for sheets or pads.

My improved binder or holder is especially designed by me for use in holding pads such as order books, sales books, blank sheets or the like.

The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved binder or holder of the class described, which is very easily manipulated. Second, to provide an improved binder or holder of the class described, in which the tension spring for the clamp is protected from undue stress by stops which limit the opening movement or swing of the clamp. Third, to provide in a binder or holder of the class described, an improved pencil support. Fourth, to provide an improved binder or holder of the class described, which is very simple and economical in structure and at the same time effective for the purpose, and which is strong and durable and not likely to be injured in use by careless handling or manipulation.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

The back cover l is provided at its rear end with upturned integrally formed knuckles Il. The front cover is provided at its rear with upturned integrally formed knuckles 5. The clamp member 3 is provided Iwith downturned knuckles 6 at its` rear edge enacting with the knuckles of the back cover l and with upturned knuckles 2 at its front edge coacting with the knuckles of the front cover.

The pintle S for hinging the clamp member to the back is tubular and is secured in position by spinning up its ends into retaining langes 9.

The pintle 10 for hinging the cover 2 to the clamp bar 3 is retained by any suitable means, no means bein@ illustrated, as by slightly heading its enc s.

Tension is applied to the clamp 3 by the U-shaped spring 1l which is arranged to embrace the knuckles of the back land the clamp 3, as is clearly shown in the drawing. To retain this spring in position, I provide it with a downwardly-projecting lug-like linger l2 at its front edge which engages a .hole 1.3 in the clamp. (bee Figs. I and II). This effectively retains the spring without the necessity of providing other securing means.

To prevent the breaking of the spring by a careless user, as might occur bv opening the clamp too far, and to prevent its being swung back farther than is necessary, I provide a pair of washer-like stop members lll which are arranged on the pintle 8 between the knuckles of the back and clamp member. Each stop member is provided with a pair of outwardly-projecting laterally turned stops 15, the stops of each member being disposed in opposite directions so that one engages over a knuckle of the back and the other over a knuckle of the clamp. These stops are so disposed that when the clamp is opened as far as is necessary for convenient manipulation they engage, preventing further opening movement. This not only protects the spring, but limits the opening movement of the clamp to a point most convenient i'or manipulation of the holder.

The front cover is so disposed that its outer end 16 projects beyond or overhangs the outer end of the back 1 for the entire length ot such ends. rIhis facilitates ready ras Dino' of the front cover in oaeningl the binder and obviates the necessity of providing a separate linger hold as is usually done in binders of this character and the sheets are not likely to be placed therein so as to interfere with grasping the top cover. Furthermore, a convenient and secure grasp is had upon the front cover.

The front cover is preferably longitudinally ribbed at 17 to strengthen the same. rIhe ribs when the cover is swung back over the clamp, rest upon the knuckles as shown in F ig. III, so that the cover is reinforced at the point where it fulcrums over the knuckles in opening the clamp.

The pintle 8 is preferably adapted as a pencil holder by providing it with a pencil engaging spring member 18. This member 18 is, in the structure illustrated, formed by slitting the pintle longitudinally and striking in the portion between the slits, thus forming the loop-like member 18 adapted to engage a pencil, as 19, when it is inserted into the pintle. rlhis is of advantage in that, without providing additional parts, an effective pencil holder is had.

My improved binder is very simple and economical in structure, and, at the same time, is effective for the purpose, and very convenient to manipulate. But few parts are required and these are simple in form and easily assembled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of the back and front covers having upturnedintegrally formed knuckles at their rear ends; a clamp member having downturned integrally-formed knuckles on its rear edge coacting with the knuckles of said back cover and upturned integrally-formed knuckles on its front edge coacting with the knuckles of said front cover; pintles; a U-shaped spring embracing said back cover and clamp member knuckles to apply tension to said clamp member, said. clamp mem ber being provided with an opening and said spring with a lug engaging therewith, whereby said spring is retained in position; and a pair of washer-like stop (members arranged on t-he back cover and clamp member pintle between their knuckles, said stop members being provided Vith pairs of outwardly projecting laterally turned stops adapted to engage said back and clamp member .to limit the opening movement ot said clamp member.

2. In abinder or holder for sheet-s or pads, the combination of' the back and front covers having upturned integrally formed knuckles at their rear ends; a clamp member having downturned integrallydorined knuckles on its rear edge coacting with the knuckles of said back cover and upturned integrally-formed knuckles on 'its front edge coacting with the knuckles o said front cover; pintles; a tension spring for said clamp member; and a pair of washer-like stop members arranged on the back cover and clamp member pintle between their knuckles, said stop members being provided with pairs of outwardly-proj ectin laterally turned stops adapted to engage said back and clamp member to limit the opening movement of said clamp member.

3. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of the back and front covers having upturned-integrally formed knuckles at its rear end; a clamp member having downturned-integrally formed knuckles on its rear edge coacting with tlie knuckles of said back cover and upturnedintegrally formed knuckles on its front edge coacting with the knuckles of said front cover; pintles; and a U-shaped spring embracing said back cover and clamp member knuckles to apply tension to said clamp member, said clamp member being provided with an opening and said spring with a lug engaging therewith whereby said spring is retained in position.

In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of the cover having knuckles at its rear end; a clamp member having knuckles at its rear end coacting with the knuckles of said cover; a pintle; a U-shaped spring embracing said cover and clamp member' knuckles to apply tension to said clamp member, said clamp member being provided with an vopening and said spring with a lug engaging therewith whereby said spring is retained in position; and a washer-like stop member arranged on said pintle, said stop member being provided with a pair of outwardly-projecting stops adapted to engage said cover and clamp member to limit the opening movement of sai-d clamp member.

5. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of the cover having knuckles at its rear end; a clamp member having knuckles atA its rear end coacti-ng with the knuckles of said cover; a pintle; a tension spring for sai-d clamp member; and a washer-like stop member arranged 4on said pintle, said stop member being provided with a pair of outwardly-projecting stops adapted to engage said cover and clamp member to limit the opening movement of said clamp member.

6. In a binder or holder 'for sheets or pads, the combination of the cover having knuckles at its rear end; a clamp member having knuckles at its rear end coacting with the knuckles of said cover; a pintle; and a U-shaped spring embracing said cover and clamp member knuckles to apply tension to said clamp member, said clamp member being provided with an opening and said spring with a lug engaging therewith where-V by said spring is retained in position.

7. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of the cover having knuckles at its rear end; a clamp member having knuckles at its rear end coacting with the knuckles of said cover; a pintle; a U-shaped spring embracing said cover and clamp member knuckles to apply tension to said. clamp member, said clamp member being provided with an opening and said spring with alug engaging therewith whereby said spring is retained in position; and a stop adapted to limit the opening movement of said clamp member.

S. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of a cover having knuckles thereon; a clamp member having knuckles thereon coacting with the knuckles of said cover; and a tubular pintle having longitudinal slits in one side thereof, the portion of said pintle between said slots being struck inwardly to provide a loop-like pencil engaging member.

9. In a binder or holder for sheets or pads, the combination of a cover having knuckles thereon; a clamp member having knuckles thereon coacting with the knuckles oit' said cover; and a tubular pintle having Y a portion of its walls struck inwardly to provide a pencil engaging member.
