PATENT OFFICE.
COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, NECTIOUT.
CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- BOOK-HOLDER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 733,763, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed January 27, 1903. Serial No. 140.734. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known. that I, GEORGE BODEN, of
. Watertown, county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and 1 do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The inventionrelates to holders or supports for note-books, copy-books, and the like, such as are usually employed by stenographers or reporters, and the object is to provide a holder of simple construction adapted to be attached to one cover of the book and to engage the other cover of the book when turned back,
and thus hold the book open in convenient position.
To these ends my invention consists, pri-.
marily, of a book-holder provided with means for attaching it to one cover of the book and retaining it in position thereon.
A further feature of invention consists in providing the holder with ahinge-j oint, whereby the body of the holder may be folded up against the cover of the book when not in use.
Preferably this hinge-j oint is provided with a spring, lso that the body of the holder will, I automatically fold itselfagainst'one cover of the book when released from engagement with the other cover.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be, made to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a note-book held or supported by my improved holder in a position to admit the reading ofthe notes.
,Fig. 2 is a plan view of a closed note-book,
showing iny improved holder folded against the cover. Fig. 3 is a side view of the holder. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same; and Figs. 5
. and 6 area side and plan view, respectively,
cover of u the book. As shown in the drawings, the clip B is constructed so that it will have a spring action to firmly grip the cover, and thereby retain the holder in position. The hinge-joint between the strip A and clip B is preferably provided with a spring I),
which tends to hold said parts A and B in alinement with each other. As shown in the drawings, the fiat strip A may be provided with perforations 0, used for erasing purposes.
In using my improved holder the clip B is slipped onto the free end of one cover and the strip A, by reason of the spring b, is held flat against the outer face of said cover, as shown in Fig. 2. The strip A is then grasped by one hand and turned on its hinged joint so that its hooked end a will engage the free end of the opposite cover when turned over and back, as shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen the holder is in this position, the spring I) is under tension, so that the hook a, will be held in contact with the end of the cover, and when said cover is disengaged from said hook the strip A will spring back against the outer face of the opposite cover, as shown in Fig. 2. \Vith this construction the holder will remain attached to the book until intentionally re-' moved, and thus be always in place for use. When not in use, the holder folds up against the cover out of the way and the book with the holder attached may be handled or carried in the pocket as conveniently as the book alone could be.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the part A and clip B are formed of wire and are made from a single piece of wire, which is wound to form a coiled spring I), which position thereon,
the book and a member hinged to said clip and provided with means for engaging the opposite cover of said book, substantially as described.
4. A book holder or support comprising a clip adapted to be attached to one cover of the book, a member hinged to said clip and provided at its free end with means for engaging the opposite cover, said hinged joint embodying a spring, substantially as described.
5. A book holder or support provided With means for attaching it to one cover of the 7 book and adapted to be folded up against the
