MUSIG OR BOOK HOLDER.
No. 397,627. Patented Feb. 12, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT OBERLIN BROlYN, OF AUCKLAND, NElV ZEALAND.
' MUSIC OR BOOK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 397,627, dated February 12, 18189.
Application filed November 2 l, 18 8']. Serial No. 25 5,75 2.
ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT OBERLIN BROWN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Auckland, New Zealand, have invented a new and Improved Music and Book Holder, (which has been patented in Canada, dated May 7, 1888, and numbered 29,100,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a musicrack with my improved holder applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the music-holders. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, of a modified form.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for holding the leaves of music and music-books and for analogous uses.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The spring-clip A, forming the stationary part of the holder, consists of a strip of spring metal bent twice approximately at right angles, forming the arms a b and the plain surface c. The arms a b are curved outwardly, to adapt them to embrace the edge of the shelf B of the music-rack C.
To the plain face 0 of the clip A is pivoted a finger, D, upon a rivet or screw, cl, extending through the finger and into the central part of the clip. Awasher, e, is placed on the rivet d, between the finger D and the clip, to reduce the frictional surface.v The finger D is provided with a long arm,f, above the pivot, and with a short arm, g, below the pivot, and a weight, 71, attached to or formed integrally with the finger, serves to normally keep the finger in an upright position in front of the lower part of the page of the book or sheet of music, as shown in Fig. 1. One or more of these clips may be applied to the shelf B of (N0 model.) Patented in Canada May 7, 1888, No. 29,100.
the music-rack. Generally one will be placed upon each side of the center of the book. lVhen the leaf is turned, the withdrawal of the leaf from beneath the finger D turns the finger on its pivot, permitting the leaf to escape, and as soon as the leaf is withdrawn from the finger the finger regains its upright position and prevents the escape of the following sheet of music.
Instead of employing the clip A, I may use the stud E, provided with a split inner end which is spread and curved to form two spring-arms for retaining the stud in a hole bored in the edge of the shelf B. In this case the finger D is pivoted on the outer end of the stud.
In both constructions the attaching device has spring-arms to engage the shelf and hold the device by friction thereon, and an arm swinging at right angles thereto and weighted at its lower end.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A leaf-holder consisting of an attaching portion provided with spring-arms to engage the shelf, and a finger pivoted at the outer end of said attaching portion to swing at right angles to the spring-arms, and provided on its lower end with a weight, substantially as set forth. 7
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a music and book holder consisting of the spring-clip A, formed of a strip of metal bent twice at right angles, forming the outwardlycurved arms a b and the plain surface 0, and the finger D, pivoted to the surface 0, and provided with the weight It on its short arm, as set forth.
