Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD VJ. HUB- BART), a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coat and Hat Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to what are commonly known as coat and hat hooks; and it has for its object to provide a device of the character stated, embodying such a con struction that it is adapted to be easily and cheaply produced and yet is possessed of great strength and stiffness and at the same time is compact and neat in appearance.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the coat and hat hook constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am aware. Fig. 2 is a full vertical central section of the hook. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of the fastening screw and illustrating the relative arrangement of the said screw, the filling plate by which the same is carried, the wire portions forming the shank of the hook body, and the sleeve inclosing the filling plate and the shank. Fig. i is a detail view illustrating the angular portions on the filling plate for holding the wire portions forming the shank of the hook body apart. Fig. 5 is a erspective view illustrating a coat and hat ook constructed in accordance with my invention but embodying a modified body hereinafter referred to in detail.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 thereof: A is the body of my novel hook, which is preferably formed of a single piece of wire of suitable caliber. B is the filling plate. C is the fastening screw carried by said plate,

00p the piece of of the vertical plane of the main upper arm a. As will be readily appreciated a body of the kind stated is adapted to be quickly and cheaply formed and is possessed of large capacity in that articles may be hung or placed on its arm a and its lower auxiliary arms 0.

The filling plate B is arranged against the wire portions forming the shank Z) and is provided adjacent to its upper and lower ends with projections d which are disposed at right angles to its major portion. The said projections (I extend between the vertical portions of the piece of wire and by holding the same apart lend stiffness and strength to the hook as a whole. it will also be observed by reference to certain figures of the drawings that the filling plate B serves for the connection of the screw C which is preferably, though not necessarily, of the gimlet kind shown and is riveted or otherwise fixed with respect to the plate.

As will be observed by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the sleeve 1), which is formed of suitable metal, is bent about the shank of the body and the filling plate B so that its meeting edges are disposed at the back of the shank of the body and it will also be observed that the said sleeve is provided in its meeting edges with notches c which re ceive the shank of the screw (1. The lower end of the sleeve D bears on the diverging end portions or arms 0 of the body wire, and at its upper end the sleeve is provided with a lip f disposed under the arm a of the body. By virtue of this it will be manifest that the sleeve is enabled to support and strengthen the arm a; and it will also be manifest that the sleeve by receiving in its notches c the screw 0 will prevent casual movement of the filling plate B and the screw with respect to the shank of the body.

It will be noted from the foregoing that a hook such as described is adapted to be quickly and easily produced at small cost, and when produced is still and strong and therefore well adapted to withstand the usage to which coat and hat hooks are ordinarily sub'ected. In this connection it will be particularly noticed that when the screw O is turned into a wall or other support the strain is distributed between the filling plate B and the inclosing sleeve or clasp D, and hence the liability 01' any of the parts being impaired or broken incidental to said operation is reduced to a minimum.

The hook shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, with the exception that its body A has but two arms a and c; the l said body A being formed of a single piece of wire the ends of which are brought together in the shank of the body. In this connection I desire to state that While I prefer to eanploy either the body A or the body A, I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to any particular type of body, inasmuch as the fastening means comprised in my invention may be used on any suitable type of body without involving departure from the scope of the invent-ion as defined in the claims appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In a coat and hat hook, the combination with a body having upright shank portions, of a filling plate arranged against the shank portions of the body and having a portion interposed between said shank portions, a screw fixed with respect to said filling plate,

and a sleeve surrounding the shank portions 5 of the body and the filling plate.

2. Ina coat and hat hook, the combination with a body having upper and lower arms and upright shank portions, of a filling plate arranged against the shank portions of the body and having a portion interposed be tween said shank portions, a screw fixed with respect to and extending at a right angle from said filling plate, and a sleeve surrounding the shank portions of the body and the filling plate and interposed between the lower and upper arms of the body and having notches in its meeting edges receiving the screw and also having a lip at its upper end disposed under the upper arm of the body.
