BROOM-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Grouse E. SELsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Germantown, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in broom holders, and the invention has for its object a simple, durable and efficient device of this character which embodies peculiar means for efiectually engaging the handle of a broom and supporting the same without nicking or scratching or otherwise marring the broom handle, as would roughen it and thus be likely to injure the hands of the user; which admits of a broom being engaged therewith or being withdrawn therefrom by the use of only one hand on the part of the operator, and which possesses certain other ad vantages that will become at once apparent as the invention is hereinafter disclosed, over the ordinary holders of this character in general use.

With this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe, and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved broom holder; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, partly in section, showing the spring in its normal position; and, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the spring distended to accommodate a broom handle.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

A broom holder constructed in accordance with my invention, embodies a ring or eye 1 which may be cast or formed of a bar of metal bent into the requisite form, and which is of greater diameter than the handle of the broom to be supported, so as to admit of such handle being passed upwardly through Specification of Letters Patent.

the ring, for a purpose to be presently disclosed. This ring is formed with a preferably radially extending outwardly disposed threaded shank 2 by means of which the holder is rendered susceptible of being conveniently applied to a wall or similar support and quickly detached therefrom, when occasion demands.

In order to engage the portion of the broom handle passed upwardly through the ring 1, and thus support the head of the broom above the floor, I provide a clamp that is in the form of a spiral spring a, the coils of which encircle the material forming the ring, while the ends of the spring are wound about or otherwise suitably attached to the shank 2. In the normal position of the spring, the coils thereof are drawn inwardly about the ring 1, so as to project inwardly beyond the same and substantially close the opening extending therethrough.

In the practical use of my improved holder, the same is attached to a wall or similar support, at a suitable distance above the floor, and the handle of a broom which it is desired to suspend from the holder is inserted upwardly through the ring 1, whereby to distend the spiral spring a by displacing the coils thereof, such coils hearing against the broom handle with suflicient frictional engagement to hold the same securely in position with the broom head above the floor. When the broom is again desired for use, it is only necessary to pull downwardly upon the handle, whereby to withdraw the same from the ring and relieve the spring 4; of tension, so that its coils will assume their normal positions to substantially close the opening through the ring. It will thus be seen that this improved holder admits of the broom being conveniently engaged therewith or detached therefrom, and requires the use of only one hand on the part of the operator.

In order to limit the inward movement of the shank 2, a plate or washer 3 is preferably mounted thereon near the juncture of the same with the ring, and this plate, in addition to the function above named, also serves to maintain the device rigidly in position by bearing against the surface of the wall to prevent the shank from working loose 1n the same, when the device is subjected to upward or downward tension as the broom handle is inserted therein or withdrawn therefrom. Furthermore, it will be observed that the ends of the spring 4: which are wound about the shank 2, are interposed between the ring 1 and the washer plate and are thus prevented by the latter from coming into contact with and injuring the wall.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that I have provided an improved broom holder which is very eflicient in operation and serves to effectually support the broom without the liability of mutilat-ing the handle thereof, as is the case withsome broom holders now in use; which embodies to a marked degree the elements of simplicity, durability and strength, and which consists of comparatively few parts that may be easily and cheaply manufactured and readily assembled, the parts being also adapted to withstand hard usage without getting out of order.
