Description
July 17, 1934. s. o. BARSTAD CLEANER AND DUSTER Filed Sept. l6, 1952 INVENTOR Sve O. arsfad B fiv ATTORNEY Patented July 17, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful im provements in cleaners and clusters, and has more particularly reference to a device, which on account of its special construction will permit a duster to be used and operated in places to which otherwise access would not be possible, except when employing a step-ladder.
As the device is comparatively simple, the cost of manufacturing should be proportionately low.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:
Figure 1 shows my device attached and in operation;
Figure 2 illustrates my device proper;
Figure 3 shows a modification of my device; while Figure 4 is a cross section taken on the line 44 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 shows still a further modification of the embodiment of my idea.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 10 indicates my device, which comprises two metal plates, 11 and 12, secured together by screwbolts 13 and nuts 14. Each of the said plates, 11
and 12, are bent to form a semi-cylindrical portion, 15 and 16, respectively, into which an arm 17, carrying the duster l8, and a rod 19 are inserted, respectively, as especially shown in Figure 1.
It will be noted, also from the position of the duster-arm 17, that the plate-members, 11 and 12, are joined together in such a manner, that, when the said duster-arm 17 and rod 19 are inserted in the respective semi-cylindrical portions 15 and 16 of the said plate-members, the duster 18 will assume an angle to the rod 19 of less than 90 degrees; thereby making it possible to use the said cluster to great advantage in dusting and cleaning.
A modification is shown in Figure 3, wherein the top plate 11 is made with hinges 20, and oblong slots 21 at one end thereof, thereby securing in the first place, on account of the said hinges,
5 a quick attachment of the clamping device 10 to the duster-arm 1'7, and in the second place, on account of the said slots, a relative adjustment of the said clamping device to the said duster-arm 1'7.
A still further modification of my device is shown in Figure 5. In this latter view, one 01' the plate-members, which appropriately may be designated 12', is shown with the central, or semi-cylindrical portion substantially broken oil in order to disclose a spring device; the latter comprising preferably a flat leaf-spring 22, bent upon itself, the said leaf-spring will readily admit the insertion of a rod 19 into the said semi-cylindrical portion, and at the same time automatically secure the clamping device on to the said rod, thereby making this kind of clamping device applicable to rods of a difierent thickness.
It will readily be understood that the latter two forms of construction may, if desired, be used together in the construction of both plate-members, to secure the rod 19, as well as the duster-arm 17; or each modification may be used solely in the construction of both plate-members; the latter being, when the shape in Figure 5 is used, secured together in any suitable manner.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore wish to limit myself to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
In a device of the class described, comprising, in combination, a duster secured to an arm, a rod supporting the latter at an acute angle, and means for joining the rod and arm together, said means comprising a bottom plate bent upon itself to form a semi-cylindrical portion adapted to receive a rod therein, a flat spring doubled upon itself and secured to the inner wall of said semicylindrical portion and adapted to secure the rod to the latter, a semi-cylindrical top plate secured to the first named semi-cylindrical portion at an acute angle and adapted to receive a duster arm therein, and screws for securing said bottom and top plates together, the top plate being formed with oblong slots therein for permitting a relative adjustment of the screws. to the latter, whereby to accommodate diiferent sizes of duster arms.
SVEN OLSEN BARSTAD.
