Description
PATENTED JAN. 14, 1908.
W. R. A. BALL.
BOX COVER HOLDER. APPLICATION r'nmn APR. 22. 1907.
W (2 6W: wx zm I WW5 Q Q/Vihwooeo WILLIAM ROBERT ANDREWS BALL, OF ST. THOMAS, NORTH DAKOTA.
BOX-COVER HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed April 22. 1907. Serial No. 369.563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILL'IAM ROBERT ANDnnws BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. 'lhomas, in the county of Pembina and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved means for holding box lids open, said means at the same time serving as a clip for. holding a price marking card, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box with my improved device attached thereto, showing the lid thereof retained in the open position, and a price card supported by said device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the end of the box, the lid being shown in full lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of my improved device de tached.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of a box, in this instance a cigar box, and 2 the lid thereof.
My improved clip or holder is preferably formed of a single piece of resilient wire embodying front and rear arms 3 and 4, the upper end of the rear arm 4 being bent hori zontally at a right angle at 5, and then bent back upon itself at 6 toform a clip to embrace the box lid 2 as shown. 'I he portion 6 is again bent back at Z horizontally to form in conjunction with the portion 6 a clip to receive and hold a price card or other tag 8, and merges into the vertical arm 3 that, when the device is in position, extends downward inside the corner of the box 1, as shown.
An important feature of my improved construction consists in forming the arms 3 and 4 with angular shoulders 9 and 10, respec tively, the shoulder 9 of arm 3, when the device is in position, fitting over the upper edge of the rear wall of the box body 1, while the shoulder 10 correspondingly fits under the projecting lower edge of the box lid 2, as best seen in Fig. 2, whereby said arms snugly fit in position and by their resiliency retain the box lid vertically against movement in either direction.
A further function performed by the shoulders 9 and 10 is to securely lock the holder against displacement vertically, the shoulder 9 resisting downward movement, while the shoulder 10 effectually prevents upward movement.
By disposing the rear arm 4 at one end of the horizontal portions, and the front arm 3 at the other end thereof, I provide for locating said arm 3 within the extreme corner of the box 1, so that it will not interfere with the contents of the box, while the rear arm 4 is disposed against the back of the box lid 2 and box .1 some distance from the edge thereof to better support the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A holder for box lids, embodying a front vertical arm adapted to be disposed against the inner sides of the box and lid, a rear vertical arm adapted to be disposed against the outer sides thereof, and a horizontal loop integrally connecting said arms at their tops.
2. A holder for box lids, embodying front and rear arms united at their tops, said front arm adapted to be disposed against the inner sides of the box and lid, and said rear arm adapted to be disposed against the outer sides thereof, said arms being formed into shoulders intermediate their length adapted to fit respectively over the upper edge of the rear wall of the box and under the proj ecting lower edge of the box lid.
3. A holder for box lids, embodying front and rear vertical arms united at their tops by transverse connecting portions, said front arm adapted to be disposed against the inner sides of the box and lid, and said rear arm adapted to be disposed against the outer sides thereof, said arms being disposed at opposite ends of said transverse connecting portions, whereby the front arm may lie in thQgbOX corner while the rear arm may engage the box and lid at a distance from the edge thereof.
4. A holder for box lids, formed of a single piece of metal, and embodying front and rear vertical arms adapted respectively to contact With the inner sides of the box and lid and With the outer sides thereof, said arms being united at their tops by horizontal portions bent to form a clip for the boX lid and aseparate clip adapted to removably receive the tag.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature, 1n presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM ROBERT ANDREWS BALL.
