Description
E. A. BOLEN.
LID HOLDER FOR GIGAR BOXES.
APPLICATION FILED 00131, 1910.
1 092 807 Patented Apr. 7, 191% 1m ALP!!!" EMERSON A. BOLEN, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 NORTHWESTERN NOVELTY COMPANY, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LID-HOLDER FOR CIGAR-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERSON A. BOLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Morris, county of Grundy, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Holders for Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple, yet strong and durable lid holder for cigarboxes, by which the lid of a cigarbox may readily be fixed in an open position in such a manner as to make a convenient handle for the box.
Particular features of my improved lidholder are that it takes up practically no space whatever on the side of the box, that it is quickly and firmly attachable to any cigarbox, and as quickly detachable; and that it is absolutely positive in making a rigid connection between the lid and the box.
In the drawings Figure 1. is a perspective view of my device attached to a cigarbox; Fig. 2. is a like view from the outer side of the box; and Fig. 3. is a perspective view' corresponding to that of Fig. 1, without the cigar-box.
Referring to the drawings, vertical member 5 is formed at the forward portion of its lower edge with horizontal shoulder 6, adapted to engage the upper edge of side 7 of cigarbox 8, and with vertical flange 9, depending from shoulder 6 and adapted to en gage outer surface 10 of side 7.
Vertical member 5 is further formed, at right angles to it, with sloping shoulder 14, adapted to engage the outer side of lid 15 of box 8, and with flange 16, adapted to engage the inner side of lid 15, and formed so as to make a convenient holder for a ticket, showing the price of the cigar contained in box 8. Immediately above shoulder 6 member 5 is provided, on the side opposite to shoulder 6, with curl 19, preferably formed by shearing down, and curling over, a lug from the body of member 5. In curl 19 is rotatably held spring lever 20, provided with short arm 21, having a claw 22 at its extremity which is adapted to engage the inner surface 23 of side 7, and provided also with long arm 24 having at its end claw 25 which is adapted to engage the inner side of lid 15.
Member 5 and flange 14 are preferably formed with angular downward extension 27, adapted to engage the corner of box 8 which is formed by side 7 and back 26.
My device is attached to box 8- by placing shoulder 6 in position on the rear end of the upper edge of side 7, at the same time insertlng lid 15 between shoulder 14 and flange 16, and then pushing down lever 20 and bringing claws 22 and 25 firmly into engagement with surface 23, and with the inner side of lid 15, respectively. Detachment is effectedby slmply disengaging claws 25 and 22.
If preferred, claw 25 may be made to engage the inside of back 26, instead of the inner side of lid 15.
I claim 1. In lidholders for cigarboxes, a vertical member 5 having a horizontal shoulder 6 adapted to engage the upper edge of one of the sides of a cig'arbox, a vertical flange 9 adapted to engage the outer surface of such side, a. sloping flange 14:, at right angles to member 5, adapted to engage the outer side of the lid of the box, and a flange 16 adapted to engage the inner side of the lid in combination with a spring lever 24 oscillatably mounted on member 5, and having two claws, one to engage the side of the box, opposite to flange 9, and the other to engage prefer ably the inner side of the lid.
2. In lidholders for cigarboxes, a vertical member 5, having a horizontal shoulder 6, adapted to engage the upper edge of one of the sides of a cigar-box; a vertical flange 9 adapted to engage the outer surface of such side; a sloping flange 14, at right angles to member 5, adapted to engage the outer side of both the lid and the back of the box, and forming with member 5 angular downward extension 27, adapted to engage a corner of the box; and a flange 16 adapted to engage the inner side of the lid; in combination with a spring lever 21, oscillatably mounted on member 5, and having two claws, one to engage the side of the box, opposite to flange 9, and the other to engage preferably the inner side of the lid.
