ALONZO WOODRUFF, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
lVl ETALLIC BOX.
fdEEGIFIGATlQl-T forming part of Letters Patent NO. 669,951., dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed October 15, 1900. Serial No. 33,158. \NO modem To all whom it may concern:
' the cover slightly raised.
Be it known that I, ALONZO WOODRUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the'county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention is an improvement in metallic boxes; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate myinvention, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of a box embodying my invention, showing Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cover closed. Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of a box, showing a slight modification of my invention. Fig. 5 is-a sectional view similar to Figs. 2 and 3, showing another slight modification.
My invention relates to metallic boxes, and particularly to the variety of metal box which is designed and used for holding in king-pads. These boxes as ordinarily constructed are formed of sheet metal, the cover andbody of the box being each of one piece of sheet metal with struck-up flanges forming the sides of the top and body. The two parts are hinged together at one edge, and the body is provided with an inwardly bent portion forming a shoulder, upon which the lower edge of the sides of the cover are designed to rest, the sides of the cover overlapping the inwardlybent portions of the box-body. The struckup sides of cover and body may or may not be connected at the corners, and in using these boxes it is found that the sides of the cover spring outward after some use, so that the sides of the cover slip off of said shoulder and the cover goes down too far over the box, making it difficult to open the box and cansing the pad to come in contact with the top that destroysthe color of the inks, besides soiling the cover, giving an untidy appearance, and making it difficult to handle withoutsoiling the fingers. My invention is designed to overcome this difiiculty by providing the edges of the cover and box with interlocking portions to prevent the cover from ever telescoping over the box-body farther than desired.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 I have shown one form of interlocking means. In these figures A represents the cover, and B represents the box-body. Each part is formed in one piece and has struck-up portions forming side walls, but not connected at the corners. The side walls of the body B have their upper portions bent inwardly at e to forma shoulder 6, as usual, although this is not essential to my box. The front wall at of the top A is provided with one or more inwardly and downwardly extending interlocking projections 0 a, (two being shown,) which are preferably formed by punching out portions of the front wall and bending them inwardly and downwardly, so that said projections lie parallel to said front wall. When the cover is closed upon the box, the front wall will pass on one side of the portion eof the body and the projections 0 will pass on the other side, forming an interlocking construction which prevents the cover from telescoping over the box. If desired, the part e of the front wall of the boxbody may be bent outward, as at g g, to form recesses for the reception of the projections 0 c, as shown in Fig. 1; but this is not essential, and these recesses are not shown in Figs. 2 and 3. I may accomplish the same resuit by locating the interlocking projections on the front side wall of the box-body,as shown in Fig. 5, in which A represents the cover; B, the box-body; 6- the inwardly-bent portion of the front Wall; (1, the front wall of the cover, and 72 one of the struck-up interlocking projections punched from the front wall of the box-body and bent in this case outwardly and upwardly.
In Fig. 4- I have shown a portion of a box having both its body and cover provided with the interlocking projections. In this figure, A represents the cover; (1 its front wall; 0', one of the interlocking projections; E the of the box, which produces a chemical action box-body; e the inwardly-bent portion there of, and h one of the interlocking projections on the body.
I do not desire to be limited to the use of the interlocking project-ions on the front walls only of these boxes, as it is perfectlyobvious that they might also be provided at the sides, if desired. It is also to be understood that in the presentinstance the cover and box are connected at their rear edges bya hinge; but my invention is also adapted for use with boxes in which the cover and box are not hinged together, in which case two opposite edges or all the edges of cover or box, or both, may be provided with said interlocking projections. By using this form of box the cover can be raised easily at all times and without the use of more than one hand and Without either wasting the ink or soiling the hands with the pad.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box and cover constructed to have the cover close by having the box-engaging walls pass to a position substantially parallel and in close relation to the Walls of the box, one of said parts being provided with a projection extending laterally and toward the other part to engage the edge of the said other part and hold the parts from undue movement in closing, substantially as described.
2. In a box, the combination with the main body, of a top constructed to have the walls engaging the main body close the box by passing to a position substantially parallel and in close relation to the walls of the box, each of said parts being provided with projections extending laterally from the wall and toward the other part to engage the edge of the opposing part and hold the parts from undue movement in closing, substantially as described.
3. In a box, the combination with a main body provided with sides or flanges having inset portions forming a shoulder, a cover hinged to the body and having flanges adapt- I ed to overlap or telescope over said inset portions of the body, said overlapping portions being provided opposite to said hinge with a projection secured to one part and extending laterally and toward the other part, to receive an edge of a flange connected with the other part and limit the telescoping of said parts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
