srnoirron'rroiv forming part a Lass Application June l3, l8j9i9 To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, BUBKARD a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new andnseful Improvements in Cases or Boxes for Matches or other 'Articles and I do hereby declare the following to. be a full, clear, and exactde-- scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. This invention has reference to improvements in cases or boxes such as are ordinarily employedfor the carrying of matches, postage-stamps, or for jewelry or other like cases. r The object of this invention is to provide a novel construction of case or box which shall be very simple in its construction and toproQ vide a novel construction of holding or locking catch therefor, all of which will be hereinafter fully in the clauses of the claim. 4 With these several objects in view my invention consists, essentially, in the novel arrangement of a pair of hinged leaves or coversections, one provided with a right-angled edge or wall, which forms a back, and a boxlike receiving device arranged between said leaves or cover-sections, said receiving device having three sides thereof at the front,
and ends closed, but at the back, where it is fitted against the right-angled edge of one of said leaves or cover-sections, open, the whole thereby receiving the appearance of a book in miniature, the leaves or cover-sections of which may be provided with a covering of leather or other similar material. 1
My invention consists, furthermore, in such other novel arrangements and combinations of the parts comprising the box or case, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, and finallyembodied in the clauses of the claim,
The invention s fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my novel construction of case or box, and Fig. 2 is an edge or side RosENBANn,
set forth, and finally embodied Iiatent 110.6%,543, dated October 10, 1899.

view of the same on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a plan or top viewofthe box or case embodying theprinciples of my invenrepres enited in their open relation and illusitrating the receiving device in its operative position. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section on an enlarged scale, saidseotionlbeing taken on line. i a in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinalvertical section taken on line 5 5 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail front View of the locking or holding parts connected with one of said leaf or cover sections and the edge of the said receiving device, the parts just about ing engagement. Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section of the said parts in their locked or holding engagement one with theother. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the hinged leaf or cover sections, represented in their open positions to receive the receiving device; and
ceiving device.
Similar, letters of reference are employed -i-rrall of the said above-described views to in dicate corresponding parts. 7 In said drawings, a. and 0. indicate the two leaves or cover-sections hereinabove mentioned, one of the said leaves or sections, as at, having an edge or wall a extending along one side at a'right angle to the body of said section, orapproximately so, and being formed with ears a and open spaces between said ears for the reception of ears a on the other leaf or cover-section a, the two sections being pivotally connected by means of a pintle 2) to form the hinged cover-sections, as clearly illustrated in'Fig. 8 of the drawings. As will be noticed from said Fig. 8, the said leaf or section or also has struck up out of its body or otherwise formed thereon one or more which will be set forth in detail hereinafter.
At or near the central portion of the edge a of the leaf or section o: I have stamped out thereon a portion of the metal, so as to provide a hole or opening a", preferably shaped in outline, as represented more, particularly in Figs. 3, 6, 7, and 8, with the connecting portion or band-like part a bent downwardly, as more clearly indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, so as to be arranged beneath the under surface to be sprung together in to their locked or hold- Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the said re-.
tion,"with the hinged leaf or cover sections holding tongues or lugs cf, the purpose of a, of said leaf or cover section a, as clearly indicated. When the box'or case is to be used as a match-safe, then the said leaf or section a may be provided with serrations or other suitable scratching-surface a In order that the leaves or cover-sections a and a may have the appearance of the covers of a book, the various corners of said sections a and a may be rounded off, as at a, and the various sides and edges of the said sections may be provided with a leather or other suitable covering d, which is secured to the metal surfaces of said sections a, and a in any wellknown manner. It will, however, be understood that the said covering (1 may be dispensed with, if desired, and that the exposed metal surfaces of said leaves or sections a and a may be otherwise ornamented. The said receivingdevice hereinabove mentioned,
which is to be used in connection with the said leaves or cover-sections a and a, is indicated by the reference-letter c. It is made of sheet metal, and consists, essentially, of the body 0 and the upwardly-extending sides 0 at the ends and a connecting side 0 at one edge of said body, the other edge e of said body being made withoutsuch upwardlyprojecting side, as clearlyillustratedin Fig. 9.
The upper corners of the sides 0 are preferably cut away, as at c, and centrally disposed upon the upper edge of the side 0 and forming an integral part thereof is an upwardly-extending tongue or ear 0, which is formed, by means of a suitable (lie, with the rounded portion and the forwardly-bent edges 0 which extend beyond the outer surface 0- of the side 0 and hence form a pair of holding portions 0 which can be forced over the connecting portion or band-like part a of the leaf or cover-section a when the device is secured in position upon the leaf or cover-section Ct and when the said cover-sec tion a is closed down uponsaid device 0. To secure said device 0 upon said cover-section a, I have provided the main body portion 0 of the device 0 with one or more slots or openings 0 through which the holding tongues or lugs a connected with the said holding leaf or section a, can be forced and then bent over upon the face of said device 0, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, to securely retain the said receiving device 0 in position. When these parts havethus been connected, theinner surface of the right-angled wall a will form one side of the box or receptacle between the leaves or cover-sections a and a, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figsf3, at, and 5.
To open the case or box and to cause the disengaged positions of the holding portions 0 with the upper surface of the band-likc part a of the leaf or cover-section a, all that is necessary is toapply a slight pressure against the outer surface of the side 0 of the device 0 in the direction of the arrow :0 in said Fig. 7, and a slight upward pressure in the direction of the arrow 00 will permit of that I have devised a simple and cheaplyconstructed device which is neat in appearance and is well adapted to accomplish the results for which it is intended.
' Of course it will be understood that changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various parts as well as in the details of the construction thereof with out departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various parts as herein described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the various parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a box or case, the combination, with a pair of leaves or cover-sections, one of said cover-sections having a right-angled edge or wall, and a pivotal connection between said edge or wall and the other of said cover-sections, of a receiving device, between said cover-sections, said device having threeinclosing sides and one open side, said inclosing sides of said device forming with said rightangled edge or Wall of the cover-section on which said device is arranged, a receptacle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 2.
