CONTAINER FOR CHEESE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed January 2, 1917. Serial No. 140,030.
T 0 all whom; may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NowACK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hunany, residing in Chicago, in the county of following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to sheet metal containers provided for holding, cheese, and other contents.
\ A principal object of the invention is the provision of a sheet metal container which may be readily closed to provide a tight package and readily opened without the use of a can opener or other cutting instru ment.
Another and highly important object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character which, while having interlockingengag'ement between the body and cover, will permit the body'of the container to be fully opened so that the contents may be removed as a single unit and without deformation.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of such a container of simple and'cheap manufacture and which will be of leasing appearance. 1
ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in'connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment" thereof.
Referring to the drawing, 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a View of the parts showing their separation in opening",
Fig. 3 is a section through the container shown in Fig. 1 and taken along the severable strip; an
.Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the strip ona larger scale.
cover of sheet metal 12. This invention is not concerned with the particular construcis bent inwardly to provide an undercut depression 13 extending completely about the open end of the body. The cover, in the present instance, consists alsoof a sheet of metal of circular form and having. a downwardly extending flange 14 which is pressed into the depression 13 in closing the container. This formation of the flange 14 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 23, 1920. Y
J tion.of the body except that its upper edge I and. the upper end of the body results in an interlocking engagement of the cover and body with the surfaces of the two'in metal to metal or tight contact. The flange carries at one point a depending strip or ear 15 and score-or weakening lines 16 are provided across the cover and extendfrom Y the upper side edges of the tongue or car 15 on eachside of the center 15' of the cover to theopposite edge of the flange.
When it is desired to open a container constructed in this fashion it" is only necessary to sever the strip 15' from the remainder of the cover either by rolling or pulling itback upon itself to cause fracture along the lines 16. The two parts generally indicated at a which thus .result may then he slid away radially of the center of the cover to break the locking engagement between these parts and the body giving a full opening to the container so that the contents can be removed as a unit and without deformation if such contents be in the form of a cake.
It is thought-that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from'the foregoing description, and
it will be apparent that various changes may bemade in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from "the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
For the purpose of illustrating my ini 1. A container comprising asheet mptal vention I have shown on the drawing a cheese can, although it will be manifest as the invention is better understood that the container can be used for numerous other body having its edge formed in an upwardly and outwardly extending flange to produce a flared mouth, and a cover having a depressed central portion fitting within said mouth and formed at its margin wi a pair of inclined flanges embracing between them and parallel with the terminal flange of the bgdy, tlfe said depressed top portion of the cover having weakenlng l1nes extending also across the inclined flange elements of the cover andleaving between them a removable portion,
said removable portion extending in the form, of a flat tongue downward along the side of the body to be engaged by a key.
2. A container comprising a sheet metalv ting Within said mouth and formed at the terminal fiangeiof the body,
its margin with a pair of inclined flanges embracing between them and parallel with the said depressed top portion of the cover having weakening lines extending also across the inclined flange elements of the cover and leaving between them a removable portion,
said removable portion extending in the form of a flat tongue downward along the side of the, body, said tongue having a portion thereof removed to form a perforation. I
Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. NQWACK.
