J. E. BAECHLE SCREW CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Filed April 16 1925 Patented Oct. 12, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. BAECHLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SCREW CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed April 16, 1923.
My invention relates to sheet metal closures for containers and has for a principal object the provision of a simplified and inexpensive form of screw-threaded fingerpiece for removing a closure of the screw type adapted to engage the interior of the container.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be 'apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially broken away and sectionalized, of a container closure in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fingerpiece prior to the application of the closure.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a closure having a depressed head 21 and an upstanding wall part 22 at the outer edge thereof, said wall part being screwthreaded, as indicated at 23, and having an outwardly turned top flange 24 which, in the present instance, is turned downwardly at its outer edge, or curled, as indicated at 25. A tingerpiece 26 is adapted to be secured to the flange 24: at opposite points. Said flngerpiece is provided with depending side flanges, or wall parts, 27, which are cut away at 28 at their ends, in such manner as to fit closely within and against the upper part of the wall 22. The ends 29 of said finger piece are bent downwardly at a line of bend 31 and are adapted to be clenched upon the flange 24: in any preferred manner. The flange 24 may be bent by force applied to clench the parts 29, thus forming shoulders 32 to prevent lateral displacement of the ends of the fingerpiece.
Serial No. 632,251.
Since said fingerpiece 26 may be formed of sheet metal, it may be readily manufactured by simple stamp and the closure ing and bending operations may be very economically produced. When positioned as shown, this part provides adequate leverage to turn the closure to closed position, or to remove it to open the container.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant stood from the it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the advantages will be underforegolng descrlption, and
form, construction and arrangement. of the parts without departing from the spirit a nd scope of the invention, or
sacrificing all of its material advantages,
the merely a preferr I claim: 1. A closure f marginal flange form hereinbefore described being ed embodiment thereof.
or containers, comprising a sheet metal disk having an upstanding adapted for screw-threaded engagement with the container body, and a sheet metal fingerplece extending across the center of the closure and having its ends permanently sec said flange, said ured to the upper edgerof hngerpiece having depend 2. A closure f depressed head threaded wall pa or containers, comprising a with an upstanding screwrt thereabout, said wall part having an outwardly projecting flange at its upper edge, and a sheet metal fingerpiece having its ends clenched upon said flange at opposite points,
aid fingerpiece being inwardly flanged to provide a smooth engaging surface and bein sald head.
