UNHTED STATES PATENT orsicao JOHN M. HOTI-IERSALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FRICTION-TOP CAN.
Application filed April 27,
To all whom it may coowern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. HOTHER- SALL, a citizen of the'United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-T op Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to friction top cans and has for its object broadly the provision of a friction top can, the friction top or plug of which may be readily pried off or removed by the use of a coin or any handy tool or implement.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a can of this character, the top and body of which will be so constructed that the cover may be pressed down tightly to closed position without rendering difficult the insertion or manipulation of the coin or tool and without danger of inaccurate engagement of the inter-engagement friction walls of the cover and body.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a can of the character described and having the advantages mentioned, which will provide a full face smooth surface of the top when the latter is being pushed into closed position.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a top for such a can, which can be easily and cheaply'manufactured and which may be safely handled without danger of damage and which can be used with any body having an opening of appropriate dimensions to receive it.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which taken in connection with the accompanying drawing discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a can embodying my present invention; and
Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional views on the axis of the can.
For the purpose of illustrating my present invention I have shown on the drawing a can body comprising a body wall 11 of cylindrical form closed at its bottom with a suitable closure 12, and having at the top the usual annulus 13, seamed at 14 to the top edge of the body. This annulus extends in toward the center of the can and is pro 1920. Serial No. 377,038.
vided at its inner edge with a downwardly or inwardly extending friction wall providing flange 15. The annulus shown on the drawing is bent up at 16 adjacent its inner edge and is provided with a horizontal rim 17 from which the flange 15 extends inwardly. v
The top comprises a central or body part 18 surrounded by an upstanding friction wall providing flange 19. A horizontal portion 21 is provided to extend out from the flange 19 and this part 21' connects with a downwardly extending flange part 22 spaced from and arranged in parallelism with the flange part 19, whereby a prying coin or instrument may extend fully under and within the flange 22 up to the wall 19.
When the cover is assembled on to the body it is inserted within the flange 15 of the body and pushed down into tight frictional engagement therewith and until the flange rim 22 engages the part 17 of the annulus. At intervals the flange part 22 is interrupted at 28 to permit the insertion beneath the part 21 of a coin or other implement to pr the cover from closed position, which imp ement may be inserted as far as the spaced-away wall 19. This interruption of the flange 22 is accomplished by. bending portions 24 of it back and up against the part 21 reinforcing this part at the points at which prying off may be accomplished.
It will be manifest-that the construction just described may be cheaply and easily provided and will prevent inaccurate seating of the cover or top since the flange parts 22 between the interruptions are brought into accurate bearing or engagement upon the part of the body surrounding the openmg.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood without further description and it Wlll be apparent that various changes may be made in the form and construction of the device without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, the form herelnbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A friction top can comprising a sheet metal body and cover, the body having a top end of annular form provided with an 1n-' wardly presented friction seat wall; and the cover being formed with inner and outer vertical walls spaced from each other the inner Wall forming a friction seat wall for engagement with the said seat Wall of the top end and the outer Wall forming a stop against said top end to regulate the insertion of the cover into the body, the outer wall being formed with an opening for the insertion of a prying device fully under said outer Wall.
2. A friction top can comprising a sheet metal body and cover, the body having a top end of annular form provided with an in- Wardly presented friction seat wall; and the JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
