FRICTION-TOP can.
Application filed April 19, 1920.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LnIoH'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Roslindale, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Friction- Top Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to friction top cans and has for its object broadly the provision of a friction top can, the friction top or plug of which may be readily pried off or removed by the use of a coin or any handy tool or implement.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a can of this character, the top and body of which will be so con structed that the cover may be pressed down tightly to closed position without rendering diflicult the insertion or manipulation of the coin or tool and without danger of inaccurate engagement of the interengaging friction walls of the cover and body.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a can of the character described and having the advantages mentioned, which will provide a full face smooth surface of the top when the latter is being pushed into closed position.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a top for such a can, which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which may be safely handled without danger and which can be used with any body having an opening of appropriate dimensions to receive it.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which taken in connection with the accompanying drawing discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a can embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the central axis of the can shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation thereof.
For the purpose of illustrating my present invention I have shown on the drawing a can body formed of a cylindrical wall 11, closed at its bottom by a suitable closure 12 and having an inwardly extending an- Serial No. 374,795.
The top or friction plug consists of a central circular part 18 surrounded by a substantially cylindrical portion 19 which provides a friction wall for engagement with the friction wall 17 of the annulus. A shoulder 21 is provided above the friction wall 19 and extends outwardly continuously around the top for engagement with the horizontal part 16 of the can body. The top is provided with an outwardly extending pry-off flange 22 spacedabove the shoulder 21 by a vertical cylindrical portion 23, said pry-off flange being bent back upon itself as indicated at 24 in Fig. 2.
The interengaging parts of the cover or top and the body, i. e., the shoulder 21 of the top and the fiat portion 16 of the body, space the flange 241 above the part 16 ofthe body evenly and at the required distance and insure accurate engagement between the interengaging friction Walls.
It will be manifest that the can described can be cheaply and easily manufactured! and that the tops, being strong, are not easily damaged in shipment and handling.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing without further description, and it will will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacri' flcing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A friction-top can, comprising a body provided at its top with an inwardly extending annulus the outer part of which is cylindrical part, with a larger and outer cover. having an outwardly extending cylindrical, part, between which cylindrical; flange which. is spaced above the bent-up parts is a shoulder adapted to engage on part of said annulus by means of said 10 top of said annulus Whenthe can is fully shoulder, the said outer cylindrical part be- 5 closed and thereby limit the insertion of ing of less diameter than said'bent-up part the friction seat Wall of the cover Within and said flan e. the friction seat wall of the annulus, the ErEORGE A, LEIGHTON.
