5 Claims. l The invention relates to covers for pails and buckets and more particularly to a cover which may be snapped into place within the open up* per end of the pail or bucket and rigidly held against accidental displacement;
Various forms of materials are shipped or stored in pails or buckets, and for this purpose it is necessary that a cover be provided which cannot he accidentally displaced during transportation as otherwise the contents of the pail might be damaged or lost.
The present invention contemplates the provi- Sion of a cover suitable for this purpose, and it is an object of the invention to provide a one piece cover which may .be quickly and easily snapped into place in the open, upper end of a pail and rigidly held against accidental displacement.
Another object is to provide such a cover in combination with a pail having a peripheral groove near its upper end, into which the cover is inserted and frictionally held against dislacement.
A further object is to provide such a cover having a depending rim flange provided at its lower edge with an out-turned peripheral bead adapted to be received into the annular groove in the pail and frictionally held therein.
A still further object is to provide such a cover in which the depending, peripheral flange has sufficient spring therein to permit the peripheral head to snap into the annular groove in the pail.
Another object is to provide such a cover in which an annular rib is formed at the junction of the cover and the depending peripheral flange, under which a screw driver or other tool may be inserted to pry the cover loose from the pail.
Still another object is to provide such a cover having an annular rib upon its top, positioned to be received within the chime of a pail, so that pails with the covers thereon may be stacked in vertical tiers and held against lateral displacement.
The above objects together with others which will be apparent from the drawings and following description, or which may be later referred to, may be attained by constructing the improved pail and cover in the manner hereinafter described in detail and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pail constructed in accordance with the invention, with the improved cover mounted within the upper, open end thereof;
Fig. 2 a detached perspective view of the cover;
Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view through the up per portion of apail showing the manner in which the cover is inserted therein; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a-pail with the cover inserted therein, showing :the lower portion of another pail located upon the cover, the upwardly dis posed, annular rib upon the cover being received within the chime of the :upper pail to prevent lateral movement thereof.
Referring now to the construction illustrated in the drawings in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout, a sheet metal pail or bucket of conventional and well-known design is indicated generally at ll 0, the side wallsthereof being shown as formed of two sheets of met al, as in usual practice, connected together at their meeting edges by the conventional sea-ms i l;
The pail is provided with a conventional bot tom wall l2 connected to the lower end portion of the body in usual and wellelmown manner, .so as to provide the chime 13. The conventional corrugations i 4 may be provided at a point below the upper ledge of the bucket, for strength ening and reinforcing the same, and the usual outturned rim bead .15 may the .formed at the open upper edge of the pail.
Any suitable form of cars .16 may be attached to the upper portion of the for connection of the usual handle bail 11. The pail orl bucket difiers from the conventional pail only in the provision of an annular groove ill spaced be low the rim head '15 for attachmentof thecover as will be later described.
The cover, indicated generally at I9, is formed from a flat sheet of metal having the concentric, annular rib 20 on its upper surface for a purpose to be later described. The cover is circular in shape and provided at its periphery with the rounded, annular rib 2|, below which is the depending, slightly outwardly flared, annular flange 22, terminating at its lower edge in the out-turned, rounded head 23, of a diameter to snugly fit within the annular groove I8 in the pail.
In order to attach the cover to the pail, as shown in Fig. 3, the cover is tilted at a slight angle so that one side of the head 23 of the cover is received in the adjacent portion of the annular groove I 8 in the pail, as indicated at A in Fig. 3. Downward pressure is then applied to the opposite side of the cover as indicated at B in Fig. 8. a
The depending flange 22 of the cover has sufficient spring therein to permit the bead 23 of the within the pail without danger of accidental dis- 7 placement of the cover which might permit the contents of the pail to be spilled or damaged.
As shown in Fig. 4, pails provided with these covers may be stacked in vertical tiers, the chime l3 of each pail receiving the upwardly disposed] annular rib on the cover of the next lower pail, thus preventing lateral movementof the pails in a tier, relative to each other.
When it is desired to remove the cover from the pail it is necessary that a screw driver, or similar instrument, be inserted within the upper end of the pail and under the annular peripheral rib 2| of the cover which may then be pried upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the cover may be easily removed from the pail.
From the above it will be obvious that a simple, inexpensive, one-piece cover is provided which may be quickly and easily applied to the open, upper end of a pail and rigidly held against accidental displacement, without the use of any outside fastening means, and which can onlybe removed by prying the cover upwardly out of the pail as above described.
I claim:
1. In combination with a pail comprising upwardly flared side walls having an internal an-.
nular groove therein spaced below the open up-- per end of the pail, a flat sheet metal cover for the pail having an outwardly disposed corrugated annular rib at its periphery andtermi mating in a depending annular flange of less diameter than said rib, and an outwardly and upwardly rolled peripheral bead at the lower end of said flange, said bead being of the same diameter as said groove and adapted to frictionally fit within said groove.
2. In combination with a pair comprising upwardly flared side walls having an internal annular groove therein spaced below the open upper end of the pail, a flat sheet metal cover for the pail having an outwardly disposed corrugated annular rib at its periphery and termina't-j ing in a depending outwardly flared annular flange of less diameter than'said rib, and an outwardly and upwardly rolled peripheral bead at the lower end of said flange, said bead being of the same diameter as said groove and adapted to frictionally fit within said groove.
3. In combination with a pail comprising upwardly flared side walls having an internal annular groove therein spaced below the open upper end of the pail, a flat sheet metal cover for the pail having an outwardly disposed corrugated annular rib at its periphery and terminat- "ing in a depending annular spring flange of less diameter than said rib, and an outwardly and upwardly rolled peripheral bead at the lower end of said flange, said bead being of the same diameter as said groove and adapted to frictionally fit within said groove.
4. In combination with a pail comprising upwardly flared side walls having an internal annular groove therein spaced below the open upper end of the pail, a flat sheet metal cover for the pail having an outwardly disposed corrugated annular rib at its periphery and terminating in a depending outwardly flared annular spring flange of less diameter than said rib, and an outwardly and upwardly rolled peripheral bead at the lower end of 'said flange, said bead being of the same diameter as said groove and adapted to frictionally fit within said groove.
5. In combination with a pail comprising upwardly flared side walls having an internal annular groove therein spaced below the open upper end of the pail, and having a chime at the lower end of the pail, a'flat sheet metal cover for the pail having an outwardly disposed corrugated annular rib at its periphery and terminating in a depending annular flange of less diameter than said rib, and an outwardly and upwardly rolled peripheral bead at the lower end of said flange, said bead being of the same diameter as said groove and adapted to frictionally flt within said groove, and an annular rib upon the top of the cover adapted to fit within the chime of a similar pail.
