Description

This invention relates to a container having a tubular fibre body and a metal ring secured to an end thereof in an end seam, the ring end being closed by a removable metallic cover, and has particular reference to spaced inserting and locking indentations pressed in the outer periphery of the end seam for the reception of the cover which when rotated slightly upon the container allows holding lugs of the cover to lock the cover against loosening and dislodgment from the container.
An object of the invention is the provision of a container having a cylindrical libre container body with a metal ring secured to the top end thereof in an end seam, the outer periphery of such a seam being pressed inwardly at spaced intervals to provide inserting and loci:`
ing indentations with an unpressed stop portion therebetween, this seam receiving a removable cover with a depending skirt which terminates in a hemmed edge, this edge being pressed inwardly at spaced intervals to provide hemmed holding lugs which coact with, enter and pass through the seam indentations, and upon slight rotation of the cover locking projections formed in the depending cover, skirt, snap over the unpressed stop portions and into the locking indentations, thereby preventing loosening or dislodging of the cover from the container.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a container of the character described, of a frangible sealing `disc secured to the top end of the container body by the said metal ring for temporarily sealing the container content-s protected by the removable cover, the cover having a raised top for nesting engagement with a countersunk panel in a metallic bottom end of another container when the containers are arranged in superimposed position.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the upper portion of a container and cover embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the vcontainer shown in Fig. 1 with the cover removed;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan view of the container and cover shown in Fig. 1 with parts broken away and with parts in section; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, on a slightly smaller scale.
As a preferred embodiment of the invention the drawing discloses a container Il (Figs. l and 4), which comprises a tubular fibre body l2 having a metallic end I3 secured to the bottom end of the body in a suitable end seam I4. The top end of the body i2 is closed by a temporary sealing disc i5, made of Cellophane, paper or other suitable frangible material which is adapted to be cut out to gain access to the container interior.
The disc i5 is held in position by a. depending wall i5 of a metal ring or annulus l1 which is located at the upper end of the nbre body and,A is secured thereto in a suitable end seam I8. The depending wall i6 extends inwardly and downwardly inside the container as at 22 and terminates in an inner hemmed edge 23 which denes the mouth of the container.
The end seam i8 hereinbefore described, is similar to the end seam I when initially formed, having a circumferential outer periphery; as best illustrated in Fig. 4. The outer periphery of the end seam i8 however, is altered at spaced inter vals around its circumference by providing in the outer surface of the ring I'i a series of circumferentially spaced inwardly pressed or fiattened sections which constitute cover inserting indentations 24 and adjacent cover locking indentations 25 (see also Figs. 2 and 3).
There are preferably four sets of inserting indentations 2d and locking indentations 25 formed in each end seam It of the container. The indentations of each set are separated by an unpressed portion 2B which denes a stop for a removable cover 21. the indentations 24, 25 provide suitable holding means for the cover 21. Such a cover iits over the top of the container in the rst instance and is utilized as a reclosure after the sealing disc I5 is cut out in opening the container.
The cover 21 has an annular portion 2B which is adapted to engage upon the end seam I8 of the metal ring when the cover is applied to the container. This cover is formed with a depending skirt or flange 32 which extends down over and belowy the end seam i8 and terminates `in an outwardly hemmed edge 33.
The hemmed edge `33 of the depending skirt is pressed inwardly at spaced intervals (Figs. 1, 3 and 4) to provide hemmed holding lugs 34. 'These lugs cooperate with the unpressed section of the end seam I8 adjacent the locking indentations 25 to hold the cover in place when it is applied to Such stops together with .3 the container. This will be described fully hereinafter.
The hemmed holding lugs 34, of which there may be four, are circumferentially spaced to match or align with the inserting indentations 24 34 are -below the level of the end seam. A slight rotation of the cover relative to the container rst brings the hemmed holding lugs 34 under the unpressed stop portion 26 of the ring I1 and then as the cover is turned further until the holding lugs pass under the seam adjacent and beneath the locking indentations 25 of said ring. This is a, reclosure position as shown in Fig. 3.
Provision is made in the present invention to lock the cover when in closed position on the container against accidental displacement. For this purpose a plurality of inwardly pressed locking projections 35 are provided on the depending skirt Wall 32 of the cover v(Figs. 1, 3 and 4). There are preferably four such locking projections, one disposed above each hemmed lug 34. In lowering the cover into place for rotation the projections 35 therefore pass down into the inserting indentations 24 of the ring l1.
Upon rotation of the cover into reclosure position as previously mentioned, the locking projections 35 ride over the stops 26 of the ring l1 and enter or snap into the associated locking indentations 25 of said ring. This is best illustrated ln Fig. 3. In this position the hemmed holding lugs 34 of the cover are held in locked position beneath the end seam I8, the interlocking stops or indented projections 25, 35 'preventing inadvertent reverse rotation of the cover. This prevents accidental loosening and-dislodgment of the cover from the container. K
In order' to facilitate desired reverse rotation of the cover for its removal, the periphery of the skirt 32 adjoining the regions of the locking pro- Jections 35 is knurled or corrugated as at 3B (Figs. 1, 3 and 4). These knurled sections assure a rm hand grip on the cover.
The cover 21 preferably is formed with a raised K central panel 31 (Figs. 1 and 4). The circumferential boundary wall 38 of the panel is of a diameter slightly smaller than a, countersunk recess 42 in the bottom end I3. This permits nesting engagement of containers when they are arranged in superimposed position.- The dot and dash lines in F18. 4 show this.
It is thought that the inventionand many of .its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form. construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a, preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container, comprising in combination, a tubular fibre body, a metallic bottom end secured to an end of the body and having a. countersunk panel defining a recess, a frangible sealing disc in the top end of the body for temporarily sealing the container, said disc being adapted to be cut out for gaining access to the container'interior, a metal ring engaging the periphery of said disc and secured to the top end of said body in an end seam, the outer surface of said end seam being pressed inwardly at spaced intervals to provide associated inserting indentations and adjacent locking indentations with an unpressed stop portion disposed between each of such associated indentations, a metal cover for closing the ring end o'f the container, said cover having a raised top for nesting engagement within the bottom recess of a superimposed container, said cover also having a depending skirt terminating in a hemmed edge, said hemmed cover edge being pressed inwardly at spaced intervals into hemmed holding lugs, a plurality of locking projections in said depending skirt, one adjacent each hemmed holding lug, said holding lugs passing through and said projections passing into said inserting indentations when the cover is applied to the container, and interrupted knurled hand engaging sections formed in said cover skirt for facilitating the handling of the cover, whereby upon rotation of the cover each projection snaps over the corresponding unpressed stop portion of said end seam to prevent'accidental removal of the cover from the container.
2. A container comprising a. tubular fiber body, f
a metal ring secured to one end of said body in .an end seam, the outer surface of said ring adjacent the wall of said body being pressed inwardly at spaced intervals tov provide inserting indentations and adjacent cooperating locking indentations with an unpressed stop portions disposed between each of said inserting and locking indentations, a metal cover for closing the container and having a. depending skirt, the lower portion of said skirt being pressed inwardly at intervals to provide a plurality of spaced holding lugs for insertion through the inserting indentations of said ring when the cover is applied to the container, and a locking projection in said depending cover skirt adjacent each holding lug for passage through the inserting indentation of said ring when the cover is applied to the container, whereby upon rotation of the cover a said cover lug engages beneath said ring and a said cover projectionA snaps over an unpressed stop portion of the ring to prevent accidental removal of the cover from the container.
3. A container comprising a tubular fibre body, a metal ring secured to one end of said body in a laterally outwardly extending end seam, the outer surface of said ring being pressed inwardly at peripherally spaced intervals throughout its extent to provide a plurality of pairs of inserting and locking indentations having an unpressed stop portion disposed therebetween, a metal cover for closing the container and having a depending skirt terminating in a hemmed edge pressed inwardly at peripherally spaced intervals to constitute cover holding lugs, and a plurality of inwardly pressed locking projections in said depending cover skirt, eaclr of said projections being spaced above and disposed adjacent each holding lug, each of said cover holding lugs and pro-v jections passing through the inserting indentations of said ring when the cover is applied to the container, whereby upon rotation of the cover a said cover holding lug engages beneath said ring and a said cover projection snaps over the adjacent unpressed stop portion of the ring to prevent accidental removal of the cover from the container.
4. A container comprising a tubular fibre body, a sealing disc in an end of the body for vtemporarily sealing the container and adapted to be cut out for opening the container. a metal ring secured to one end o! said body in an end seam cover edge being pressed inwardly at peripher ally spaced intervals to constitute cover holding lugs, and a plurality of inwardly struck locking projections in said depending cover skirt each disposed adjacent an adjoining hemmed holding lug, said cover holding lugs and projections passing through the inserting indentations of said ring 6 when the cover is applied to the container. whereby upon rotation oi the cover a said cover holding lug engages beneath said ring and a .said projection thereof snaps over the corresponding unpressed stop portion oi the ring to prevent accidental removal of the cover from the container.
