Description
Aug. 11, 1936. A. L. FORSBERG SIFTER TOP Filed May 8, 1956 Patented Aug. 11, 1936 SIFTER' TOP Albin L. Forsberg, Chicagm'llh, assignor to'Warfield Company, Chicago,lll., a corporationbf Illinois Application May 8, 1936,';Serial No 518,718
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in sifter top closures and, more especially, such a closure for a package adapted to contain condiments, such as spices, and similar substances, and designed to provide means for sifting or sprinkling the contents of the package therefrom.
The device in general is similar to that shown in Patent No. 1,153,379, granted September 14, 1915, on the application of Alfred Frankenberg, but the present invention has improvements over the construction there shown.
Among the objects of the invention is to produce a package closure of the type referred to which can be easily and cheaply made and which will not present production or manufacturing difliculties present in the device shown in the above-mentioned patent.
The present device has all the advantages of the one shown in the above-mentioned patent and has the additional advantage that the slide member is improved in appearance, more readily operable and more eflioient in construction and operation.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more readily as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device showing the features of my invention in the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a package with my improved closure; Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the sifter top closed; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the sifter top open; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the sifter top removed; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the sifter top taken as indicated by the line 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a view taken as indicated by the line 6 of Fig. 2; and Fig. '7 is a view taken as indicated by the line I of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawing, I 0 may indicate in general a container of any suitable form or shape provided with a top member ll having an elongated opening IZ therein. The horizontal portion Il of the top member is preferably depressed so that the closure will not project upwardly beyond the upper edges of the side walls of the container I0. Upwardly extending flanges l3 and downwardly extending flanges M are provided around the opening I2 in the top member, the flanges l4 adapted to form a seat for the closure member to be hereinafter described.
The closure member comprises a piece of sheet metal l5 with an upwardly projecting flange l6 adapted to seat against the flange l4 around the opening l2. The upper edge of the flange 16 on the closure member is provided with a, horizontal outwardly projecting flange IT. The closure member I5 is provided with a plurality of sifter holes l8. At opposite sides, the extreme outer edges of the flanges ll are provided with inwardly extending horizontal flange members l9, Hi, to serve as guides for the slide member to be hereinafter described.
20 indicates a slide member provided with holes 2| adapted to register with the holes l8 when the slide is in one position. When the slide is in the other position, the holes l8 are closed by it. The slide 20 is provided with a vertical flange 29 which entirely surrounds it. The upper edge of this flange is provided with a horizontal outwardly extending peripheral flange 22 entirely surrounding it. At the sides this flange 22 lies between the flanges I1 and I9 of the closure member, such flanges I i and I9 acting as guides for the slide. The side portions of the flange 22 slide between such flanges H and. H! at the sides.
The particular feature of improvement in this device over that shown in Frankenberg patent, No. 1,153,379 mentioned above is that the slide 20 in the present instance is provided with the vertical flange 2E] entirely surrounding it and also with the horizontal flange 22 entirely surrounding it. In the Frankenberg device, the slide is provided merely at the sides with vertical flanges [5 having guide flanges Hi. In the present invention, the slide is provided around its entire periphery with both the vertical flange and the horizontal flange. Providing these continuous flanges makes the manufacture of the slide much more cheap and simple as it is much easier to produce a member like the slide 20 with a continuous horizontal flange around it than it is to produce a member such as the slide shown in the Frankenberg patent. Besides this, it is much easier to operate the slide 20 if it is provided with a continuous vertical flange 20 and a continuous horizontal flange 22. In the Frankenberg device, small ears I! are turned up at the ends of the slide in order to operate the same and it is difficult in practice to engage these with the fingers. Providing the continuous flanges shown in the present device makes engagement of the slide with the fingers more easy and also provides a better closure and better operation" between the slide member 29 and the closure member l5.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A container comprising a body, a top wall having its edges secured at one end of the body to close the same, said top wall having an elongated opening with straight parallel sides and said top wall being depressed a material distance to position the closure beneath the upper edges of the side walls, an angular upwardly extending flange surrounding said opening, an inner, downwardly extending flange at the edge of the abovementioned flange, an apertured closure having an angular flange extending upwardly from its periphery and fitting snugly within the secondmentioned flange on said top wall, a horizontal peripheral flange on the upper edge of the closure flange, said horizontal flange overlying and projecting beyond the two flanges on the top wall, a perforated slide plate overlying said closure and having a continuous upwardly extending flange around its entire periphery, the side portions of said flanges fitting within the firstmentioned flanges on the closure, an outwardly extending horizontal flange around the entire periphery of said slide plate extending outwardly from the upper edge of said upwardly extending flange, the side portions of said horizontal flange overlying the horizontal flange on the closure, and portions onthe said horizontal flange on the closure at the sides of the opening in the top wall bent to overlie the side portions of the horizontal flange on the slide plate to form a guide therefor.
