LOUIS J. FREUND'I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY. OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DREDGE OB SIFTER-TOP CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. FREUNDT,.1 citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dredge or Sifter-Top Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dredge or sifter top cans.
An object of the inventlon is to provide a dredge or sifter top can which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and which is provided with a slidable, perforated cover adapted, in one position, to close completely an opening in the top of the can, WhlCll cover may e reversed in position and moved so as to have the perforations therein over said opening in the can top to thereby provide a sifter or dredge.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of thls specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can embodying my improvements and showin the cover in place as it would be while t e can is being shipped; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the can with the cover removed; Figs. 3 and 4; are vertical, sectlonal views taken respectively on the lines 33 and 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the can showing the cover in a position the reverse of that shown in Fig. 1 and wherein the sifter holes or perforations in the cover are positioned over the opening in the can top.
In said drawing the im roved can is shown as comprislng a be y member 10 made of sheet metal, paper, or other suitable material, the body member having applied thereto a top 11 countersunk as at 12 and provided with a raised, substantially rectangular, central portion 13, the latter having straight, vertical end walls 14 and underbent side walls 15. At one end the raised portion 13 is provided with a hole or recess 16 through which the contents of the can may be emptied out. Cooperating with said raised portion 13 and slidable thereon is a cover or closure 17, the latter corresponding in shape and size to the portion 13 and being provided with inturned side flanges 18 which take into the under-cut sides 15. At
one end, the cover 17 is provided with a plurality of perforations or sifter holes 19 and at its other end is provided with a depending stop flange 20 to properly position the cover when it is placed on the portion 13. When the cover 17 is placed on the top 13, as shown in Fig. 1, the hole 16 is completely covered, but when the cover is taken ofi' and reversed, as shown in Fig. 5, the sifter holes 19 are positioned over the hole 16 and if desired the cover 17 may he slid back to the position in dotted lines in Fig. 5 to thereby completely uncover the hole 16 and allow the contents to be poured out.
By forming the raised portion 13 with under-cut sides as above described the same is materially strengthened and stifl'ened and by forming the cover with inturned sides 18, the cover is also stiffened so that the two parts cooperate to always maintain a close, tight fit which is not materiall affected by frequent manipulation o the cover.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A top for dredge cans, consistin of a main portion which is bent upwar outward and downward at its edges so as to form a countersunk top surface and. a raised grooved flange adapted to receive the upper edge of the can body, the ortion of the said top within the raise flange being formed with a raised rectangular portion having under-bent opposite straight sides 15.
which extend above the said raised flange, and the top of said raised portion being formed at one end with a hole and being imperforate at the other end; combined with a sliding cover having at opposite sides inturned straight flanges 18 engaging beneath the said under-bent sides 15 and arranged above the said raised flange, the said cover being reversible, end for end, and being formed at one end with perforations and being imperforate at the other end.
2. A top for dredge cans, consisting of a main portion which is bent upward, outward and downward at its edges so as to form a countersunk top surface and a raised grooved flange adapted to receive the upper edge of the can body, the portion of the said top within the raised flange being formed with a raised rectangular portion having under-bent opposite straight sides 15 which extend above the said raised flange, and the top of said raised portion being formed at one end with a hole and being lmperforate at the other end; combined with a slidin cover having at opposite sides inturn straight flanges 18 engaging beneath the said under-bent sides 15 and arranged above the said raised flange, the said cover bein reversible, end for end, and bein forme at one end with perforations and eing imerforate at the other end, the cover eing ormed at the end remote from the said perforations with the dependin flange 20.
Signed this 29 day of J 1913, in the presence of two witnesses.
