SPICE. DREDGE Filed may 2, 1929 4 4 5'. U I I l i shiftable slide wherein the Patented June 24, 1930 UNrrEo STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES J'. lAULBAGH AND WILLIAM F. PUNTE, OF PASSAIVC, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGN'OBS T0 CONTINENTAL CAN COMPANY, INC.,
NEW YORK 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., A COIKRYOBATION 0F srIcE mannen I Application led May 2,
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles and more particularly to a receptacle for dispensing spices or the like, and commonly referred to as a spice dredge.
An object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of the above type 'having an opening in the .top thereof controlled by a slide is mounted for movement in guideways formed from the metal cut in forming the opening in the top.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of the above character wherein the metal parts forming the guideways for the slide are so 'shaped and positioned that the slide overlies the opening all the wa around and makes contact with the metal in the top at the ends of the open- 'hese and other objects willin part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the spice dredge embodying the improvements.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the saine.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the receptacle.
Fig.l 4 is a transverse sectional view through the receptacle, showing in dotted lines the metal forming the guideways positioned for receiving the slide.
The invention is directed broadly to a receptacle for dispensing spices or the like, and includes a body portion to which is attached a top. These parts are formed of metal and are secured together in any suit- 0 able way; Centrally of the top is an opening. The metal when cut to form the opening is folded back onto the outer face of the top to form guide members for guiding a slide controlling the opening. The slide is rovided with a central imperforatefl part' or closing the opening. At one side of this irripeiforatedl part is an opening which may be brought into register with the opening in the top and at the other side is a perforated portion which likewise may be brought into 1929. Serial No. 359,836.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,
the invention resides in a receptacle comprising a body portion 1 to which is secured a top 2 by a seam 3 of any suitable character. These parts are permanently attached. The topV 2 is provided with an opening 4. The opening 4 is formedv by fcutting the metal andfolding back the cut poi-tions. The metal is cut at the ends of the opening and across the center and the side portions are folded back. The folded back portion is 4 laid fiat against the outer face of the top 2 as indicated at 5 in the drawings. These folded'back portions are thence bent upwardly as indicated in dotted lines at 6 in the drawings. The top is provided with a central panel portion 7, and these folded back portions 6 are cut from the panel. The
metal beneath the folded back portions is inset so that the outer faces of these folded back portions and the outer face of the panel at the ends of the opening are fiush and lie substantially in a single plane. The opening in the top is controlled by a slide 8. The slide 8 has its side edge .portions folded back fiat against the outer face of the slide as indicated at 9, 9. The slide 8 also has its end portions folded back into raisedv beads or ribs l0, 10. This forms a finger hold-for I readily moving the slide. The slide is provided with a central imperforated portion 1l. At one side of this imperforated portion is an opening l2 and at the other side are perforations 13.
rlhe imperforated portion isv of such dimensions as to completely overlie the opening 4 in. the top when the slide is in its central position. The opening 12 may be moved into register with the opening 4 for the pouring, and the perforatlons 13 may be moved into register with the opening 4 for the pur ose of dispensing the s ices throu h the redge. After the slide has en place on the folded back portions 5 of the l ide members then the upstandin portions 6, 6 are folded down onto t e slide t us formv 10 ing guideways in which the slide is free to move back and forth. By insetting the metal beneath the portion 5 of the guideways so that the upper-faces of these portions 5 are substantially flush with the upper face of the top at the ends of the opening 4, the slide will make contact all the way around the opening and thus effectively close the opening1 when the imperforated portion 11 is over t e opening.
From the above it will be apparent that we have provided a structure which is easily l manufactured and at relatively low cost and at the same time the opening through the top is effectively controlled.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having fully described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A spice dredge comprising a body portion, a top secured thereto and having an opening therethrough centrally of the top,
a. slide having an opening therethrough, an
imperforated portion and a perforated portion, guide members formed integral with said top at the side edges of said opening, said guide members being bent outwardly,
thence upwardly and inwardly to frm guidewa s for saidslide, whereby said slide is shift-a ly attached to said top for controlling said opening. I
2. A spice dredge comprising a body portion, a. top secured thereto and having an opening therethrough centrally of the top, a slide having an opening therethrough, an imperforated portion and a perforated portion, guide members formed integral with the top at the side edges of said opening, said guide members being bent outwardly, the metal beneath said outwardly bent portion being inset so that the outer faces of said portions are substantially flush with the outer face of the top at the ends of the opening, said guide members being. bent upwardly and inwardly to form guideways for said slide whereby said slide is shiftably attached to the top for controlling said opening.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
