UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. CHAMBERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SEEET-METAL POCKET TOBACCO-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Application filed February 4, 1909. Serial No. 475,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Pocket Tobacco- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal pocket boxes for tobacco and other articles.
It consists in a box having a long, narrow, Wide body with rounded corners of suitable shape for carrying in the pocket, and provided with a top head havin a pouring opening and a central longitu al guide slot, and an inside fitting closure slide having a plurality of integral guide lips projecting through said guide slot and overlapping the edges thereof to slidably connect the closure slide with the top head, said guide slot. being provided also with an integral upwardl bent operating member projecting through said guide slot of the top head for engagement with the thumb or finger in opening and closing the slide.
My in ention further consists in the novel construe ion of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet metal pocket tobacco box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a ver tical cross section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on line 3 -3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the closure slide and Fig. 6 is a detail vertical cross section illustrating a modification in which the top head has a slip cover connection with the body instead of being seamed thereto. Fig. 7 is a detail cross sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing the top head and closure slide assembled, but before the upwardly projecting guide lips on the closure slide are clenched or pressed down to secure the parts together.
In the drawing, A represents the sheet metal body of a box having an internally rojecting loclg side seam a. B the top iiead of the box, C the bottom head and D the inside fitting closure slide.
The body A of the box is of a long, wide,
narrow form with substantially parallel side Walls a and curved edge walls a to give the box a form suitable for pocket use.
The top head B is furnished with a countersunk wall b, fitting inside the body of the box, and it may be either permanently or removably secured to the body. As represented in Fi s. 1 to 3, it is permanently secured to the ody by a double or folded scam I). As represented in Fig. 6, the top head is removably secured to the body A, and is provided with a slip cover fiange b which surrounds and embraces the upper end of the body. The top head B is provided with a pouring opening B therein, and with a central longitudinal guide slot B the longitudinal edges 6 of which are engaged by the guide devices d on the closure slide D. I
The'bottom head C is preferably furnished with a countersunk wal C and is permanently secured to the body A at its lower end by a double or other folded seam C The inside fitting closure slide D is provided with integral guide lips d, preferably four in number, which project through the guide slot B of the top head and are bent or clenched down over the lon itudinal edges b of said guide slot to slida ly connect the closure slide D with the top head. The inside fitting closure slide D is further pro.- vided with an integral upwardly bent member or portion 61 which projects through the guide slot B of the top head and thus affords a means or finger piece for opening and closing the slide.
I claim 1. A sheet metal pocket tobacco box comprising a long, wide narrow body provided with a top head havin a pouring opening at one end and a central, l ongitudinal guide slot, and an inside fitting flat, flexible sheet metal closure slide having a plurality of guide lips projecting through the guide slot of the top head, and bent down over the edges thereof to slidably connect said parts and hold them in snug engagement with each other, said closure slide having at its middle ortion between said guide li s an upward y bent integral portion pro ecting through said uide slot of the to head and serving as a nger piece for opening and closing the inside fitting slide, said closure slide fitting flat against the inner face of said top head and being covered and protected at its marginal side and end edges thereby and having a substantially as specified.
2. In a receptacle, the combination with a said 0 top head having a pouring opening and a ames guide lips a finger iece projecting h said guide slot 0% the to head, osure slide fitting flat against t e inner face of said top head and being covered and throu guide slot, of an inside fitting fiat, flexible protected at its marginal side and end edges sheet metal closure slide having integral bent thereby and having a snug close flexible enlips projecting through said guide slot and gagement therewithsubstantiallyass ecified.
engaging the edges thereof and slidably connecting said parts and holding them in snug engagement with each other, said closure slide having at its middle portion between WILLIAM J. CHANIB RS. Witnesses:
