A licationfiled August 2, 1924. Serial No. i729,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Miss ANNA DORA THIEME, merchant, citizen'of the German State, residing at Hannover, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Packing'Cases or the like of Sheet 'Meta'l', of which'the' following is specification.
Collapsible sheet metal packing cases, boxes and the like, the walls of which are held together by headings, that are capable of being slid one into the other, are known. The subject of this invention is a collapsible container of sheet metal, which is particularly easily and firmly put together and very easily taken to pieces again. In the new collapsible packing case or the like of sheet metal two opposite edges of the bottom are provided with inwardly (upwardly) bent rolled headings, for forming a connection with two opposite side walls by means of corresponding headings formed by the inwardly bent lower edges of the sides being rolled over to the outside. These side walls, the upright edges of which are provided with similar headings, are connected to the other side walls by corresponding headings, the lower edges Of which are provided with headings bent over at right angles, which are covered by similar headings formed from the bottom of the case.
The corners formed by the side walls can be supported by angle-shaped clamping members, which are preferably so constructed, that in a piece of sheet metal, one angle of which is a right angle, the edges containing the right angle are beaded over so as to fit the inwardly headed-over upper edges of the side walls of the sheet metal container.
It depends more particularly on the shape of the rolled-over headings, whether the collapsible sheet metal container will hold firmly together or not. The inwardly bent edge is rolled over so far to the outside and the corresponding heading is rolled over so far to the inside, that it is impossible to take the two headings apart from the side and that the parts can only he put together and taken apart by sliding one heading on to or ofi the other.
The invention is clearly illustrated in th accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 being a perspective view of the complete container with the cover partly broken away,
Fig.- 2 a vertical section on line A' B it of Fig. 1, I
Fig. 3 a vertical section on line C-D'ot Fig. 1, a
Figxet a transverse section on line EF of Fi 2 a l a u I V Fig. 5 shows the conta ner taken to pieces with the separate parts in section,
Fig. 6 shows a corner o1nt-, and
Fig.7 a bottom corner connection in perspective to an enlargedsca'le.
In the constructional example shown the bottom a is provided on two opposite edges with open headings b, which are rolled inwards from the side, the other two edges 0 of the bottom being bent upwards at right angles. Two of the side walls d, e, f, g, for instance the side walls (1 and f are provided at the bottom edge and all the side walls are provided at both lateral edges with similarly rolled headings h, i, k, which are so formed that the headings h of the lower edges of the side walls (1, 7 may he slid lengthwise into the headings b of the bottom part a, whilethe headings 2', k at the lateral edges of the walls (Z, 0, f, g are adapted to he slid into one another. The lower edges of the side walls e, g, which lie along the bent up edges 0 of the bottom part, have horizontally bentup edges m in place of the rolled headings, with which they rest on. the bottom part a, while the bent up edges 0 of-the bottom part embrace the walls 6, g
from the outside, thus making a tight joint.
All the rolled headings, when slidinto one another, give the container a certain rigidity. In order, however, to make the container absolutely rigid and to exclude the possibility of the walls becoming displaced, when the container is in use, corner clamps n are provided at the upper corners of the side walls cl, 6, f, g, the edges of which are headed over so as to embrace the upper edges of the side walls, which may also be headed over. These corner clamps n may he clamped in overlapping relation to the upper headed edges of the side walls or if desired soldered to the upper head of one side wall and their limbs may be rigidly connected by a fiat bridging member 0 as a stiflening member. An ordinary headed over lid 79 forms the cover of the container.
I claim:
