CHARLES E. JUDKINS, 0F READING, MASSACHUSETTS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed January 8, 1912. Serial No. 669,977.
To all 10h am it m ay concern Be it known that I, CIIARLEs of Reading, State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
My invention relates to boxes of a sectional character and especially to boxes for containing candy.
The object of my invention is to provide a box made up of sections into which the goods may be packed in successive layers, the sections of the box being so made and so combined that when one or more layers of the goods has been used the section or sections of the box containing such can be thrown away and the section or sections left form a perfect box of a size no larger than is necessary to contain the remaining goods, be they in one or more layers.
The construction comprising my invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 shows in perspective a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical cross section thereof, the respective sections or parts forming the box being separated from one another, and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the box at right angles to the sections shown in Fig. 2, the respective parts or sections being separated from one another.
1 represents the lower end section of the box or bottom receptacle. This comprises the part 2 forming the bottom of the box and the flanges 3 which combine with the bot tom 2 to form the receptacle. This receptacle in depth is preferably such as to contain only a single layer of goods although of course it may be made of any depth depending upon the height of its flanges 3.
4 represents the main cover of the box consisting of the top 5 and flanges 6. The flanges (3 combine with the top 5 to form a cover larger than the bottom receptacle 1 whereby it may fit over the same, the flanges 6 of the cover then fitting outside the flanges 3 of the receptacle, the flanges of both being of substantially the same depth as is customary. Between the bottom receptacle 1 and the cover 4 are one or more intermediate E. Jonxms,
sections 7. Each of these intermediate secin the county of Middlesex and tions comprises a partition 8 which preferably in size 1s equal to the bottom 2 of the box. Each of these partitions is provided on one side thereof with flanges 9 substantially like the flanges 3 of the bottom receptacle 1 and forming with the partition 0. receptacle which in size is substantially equal to the bottom receptacle 1 and smaller than the cover 4 which may fit over the same, each of these intermediate receptacles being like the bottom receptacle of such depth as to contaln preferably only a single layer of goods. Each of the partitions 8 is provided on the other side with flanges 10 which form with the partition a cover substantially equal in size to the main cover 4 whereby it may fit over the bottom receptacle or the intermediate receptacle of any intermediate section arranged beneath and adjacent to it.
The box shown in the drawings as illustrative of my invention is a three compartment box, the same being made up of four sections, namely, the bottom receptacle 1, two intermediate receptacle and cover-forming sections 7 and the main cover 4, which combine to form a box having three compartmcnts, one compartment 1 formed in the bottom receptacle and the two other compartments in the receptacle-forming portions of the intermediate sections.
The parts or sections formingthe box are combined as follows: Over the bottom receptacle is placed the cover-forming portion or one of the intermediate sections 7. Over the receptacle-forming portion of this same section on the other side of its partition is placed the cover-forming portion of the other intermediate section and over the receptacle-forming portion of this other section on the other side of its partition is placed the main cover 4, making the complete box having the three compartments as aforesaid with two partitions. Assuming now that the goods have been taken out of the upper intermediate section over the receptacle-forming portion of which the main cover initially fits. This section may then be removed and the main cover 4 placed over the receptacleforming portion of the remaining intermediate section, thus forming a complete box no larger in size than is necessary to contain the goods within it. Assuming now the goods to be taken out of the remaining intermediate section. This section may then be removed and the main cover placed over the bottom receptacle which is the only container left. for the goods, thus forming a box complete in itself and which is no larger in size than is necessary to contain the single layer of goods or such as may be contained only in the bot tom receptacle.
Of course that which has been referred to as the top 5 of the box forming a portion of the cover, the partitions 8 forming portions of the intermediate sections and the bottom 2 forming a part of the bottom receptacle may be constructed of more than one piece and even a portion thereof may form int/egral connection with the flanges which are referred to as connecting therewith. This is a matter of course depending upon the discretion of the box maker, and it is to be understood that these various parts are to be considered a top, bottom or partitions irrespective of whether they are made of one or more than one piece and whether the flanges integrally connect therewith or not.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that my invention provides a sectional box comprising a bottom receptacle smaller than the cover, and one or more intermediate sections each consisting of parts connected together to form on the upper side thereof a receptacle substantially equal in size to said bottom receptacle, and on the under side thereof a cover substantially equal in size to the main cover, so that said cover will fit any intermediate section, and will also fit the bottom receptacle, which latter has asmooth or unobstructed lower surface.
meaaoe Thus, in each instance, when the cover is termediate sections may be removed or thrown away.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A box having a main flanged cover, a main bottom receptacle smaller than said cover and over which said cover may fit, said bottom receptacle having a smooth or unobstructed lower surface, one or more intermediate sections each consisting of parts united together to form on the upper side thereof a receptacle substantially equal in size to said bottom receptacle and upon the under side thereof a cover substantially equal in size to said main cover, whereby, when an intermediate section is removed the said cover will fit another intermediate section, and when all of said intermediate sections are removed the cover will fit the bottom receptacle, thus providing, in each instance, a sightly smooth-bottomed box with a finished cover.
JOHN E. R. HAYES, M. E. FLAHERTY.
