UNITED STATES PATENT EFrcE.
JOSEPH R. PATTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO R. B. \VARDIN, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEET-METAL BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,710, dated September 23, 1884.
Application filed June 28, 1884. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. PATTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Sheet-Metal BoXes,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank from which the body of a box embodying my invention is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank for the lid thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the body and lid separated. Fig. 4 is a section in line 00 m, Fig. 3. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a sheet-metal box, more especially adapted for'butter, the same being of simple and inexpensive construction, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Refcrrin g to the drawings, A represents the body of a sheet-metal box, and 13 represents the lid thereof. The body is formed of the blank 0, of the parts corresponding with the bottom a and sides I) c of the body. The ends of the sides b and c are bent inwardly, forming lips D, and the portion of the blank corresponding to the corners of the bottom of the box are cut into, as at d, so that when the sides be are turned up the lips D of adjacent sides lap one another, thus closing the corner of the sides of the body and rounding said corners. The lid 13 is somewhat similarly made of the blank 0 of the parts corresponding with the top a and sides 22 c, and the portion of the blank correspondingto the corners of the top of the box are cut into, and the walls of the cut-into portions formed with flanges E, which, when the sides I) c are turned down, overlap the ends of said sides and prevent them from separating or opening out.
\Vhen the box is fiiled with butter or other substance and the lid fitted in position, the
sides of the lid embrace the sides of the body and prevent separation of said sides of the body, thus keeping the body securely closed, this being assured by the outward pressure of the sides b c of the body on the sides b 0 of the lid, and consequently increased holdingpower of the lid, it being noticed that the body and lid are formed without solder. \Vhen the box is to be emptied, the lid is displaced, and, owing to the disconnected nature of the sides I) c of the body and the disposition of said sides to separate or open, the contents of the body may be quickly removed.
If desired, the blanks for the body may be furnished storekeepers and dealers in flat condition, so as to be readily transported, and have the sides bent or set up when the box is desired for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A box-body formed of the bot-torn a and sides I) c, the corners of said bottom being cut into, as at d, and the ends of the sides being disconnected and provided with lips D, which lap one another at adjacent ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A box-lid formed of the top a and sides b c, with disconnected ends, the corners of the top having flanges E, which overlap adjacent ends of the sides I) c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A box consisting of a body formed of a bottom and sides with disconnected ends, and a lid formed of a top with disconnected sides and ends and cornenflanges overlapping the latter ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOS. It. IATTON.
