SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,810, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. Snrroma citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of paper vessels used'chiefly by retailers of ice-cream, oysters, and like substances of a semi-fluid character; and it has for its object the im proved construction of such vessels.

The novelty of my invention will be hereinafter set'forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper vessel embodying my invention and with the two-part lid closed. Fig. 2 is a corresponding View with one portion of the two-part lid opened. Fig. 3

is a plan of the blank from which the vessel is formed. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of the retaining-piece, showing its mode of attachment.

The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.

The body of the vessel may be of the usual or any suitable construction, though I prefer that it should be a substantially rectangular blank of Manila paper creased, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, to form the bottom section A, side sections B, end

sections 0, and corner sections D, which, when the vessel is made up, fold over against the side sections B, and are secured to lock the vessel together by the ends of the wire or other carrying bail B. The end sections 0 have integral extensions F F, to form the two-part lid of the vessel, and these extensions are provided with side flaps G and side extensions H, as shown. The outer edge of the half-lid F is provided with a stiffeningstrip I, either of wood or other suitable material, secured to the paper by one or more staples J or by glue, stitching, or other suitable method, or with a metal strip, as of tin,

clamped or otherwise secured thereon. If

desired, the edge of the other half-lid F may be similarly stiffened. When the blank is folded up to form the vessel, the extensions H and side flaps G overlap each other and project above the top of the sides B, as seen in Fig. 2, and they are secured together on each side by a strip of tin or other material K, as seen in Fig. 4, which is to be bent down within the mouth of the vessel to form retaining-pieces for the two-part lid. It only remains now to firstturn in the half lid F with its flaps G lying against the side extensions H, as seen in Fig. 2, and then turn in the other half-lid F with its flaps folded against the side extensions H, and then middle of the mouth of the vessel in line with the bail, and below the projections or upward extensions of the sides formed by the flaps G and extensions H, to prevent the collapsing of the vessel when carried by the bail, thus forming a compact and rigid structure and a tightly-closed vessel.

Having thus fully described my invention I claim-- V 1.- A paper vessel having an overlapping two-part lid or cover folded inward below the tops of the sides of the said vessel, said lid or cover having one or more stiffening-strips extending across the same from side to side, as set forth.

2. A paper vessel having side extensions and a two-part lid or cover formed of continuations of the end Walls of the said vessel and folded inward below the tops of said extensions, said lid or cover having one or more stiffening-strips extending across the same 0 from side to side between said side extensions, substantially as set forth.
