PATENT (Minori.-y
JOSEPH GOLBERG, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING Box.
SCI'FICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 684,929, dated October 22, 190i.
Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No. 48,663. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may 'con/067%:
Be it known .that I, JOSEPH GOLERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding paper boxes.
The invention has for its object the provision of a box that can be folded into small space for storing and shipping and can be manufactured at small cost.
With the above object in View the invention finally consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forthA In describing the invention in detail refer- 'ence is had to the accompanying drawings, in whiche- Figure l is a plan view of the box-blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box set up. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the box. Fig. iis a perspective view of a portion of the box side, showing the lidsecuring clip secured thereto. y
In the construction of the box I provide a strawboard blank having the bottom 1, ends 2, sides 3, and side flaps 4 formed of one piece and creased at the points indicated by dotted lines w for folding. At the top and bottom of each end is formed the angularly disposed slits 5, and upon the side extensions at the corners thereof are formed the angularly-disposed tongues 6 to engage within said slits to secure the sides and ends together when set up,as shown at Figs.2 and 3, the said side extension being folded inwardly. Attached to the upper edge of each side and end is secured an upwardly-extended sheetmetal tongue 7. These tongues are adapted to enter slits S, which are formed Within the flanged box-lid 9. After the goods are placed in the box and the lid is placed in position the tongues are bent down, as shown at Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be observed that the interlocking tongues 6 at the upper edge of the box when folded, Will be so positioned that the rim of the cover will overlap the interlocked tongues, and when the metallic strips 7 are passed through the slots in the cover and bent down over and against the outer faces of said flange said tongues will be heldin interlocked relation.
A box constructed in accordance with my invention presents a neat appearance, and by connecting the lid to the box in the manner shown and set forth the contents of the box is safely secured for shipping.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa
A folded blank box, comprising a blank having flaps which are adapted to be inter'- locked by means of suitable slots and tongues, a flanged cover fitting over the folded box, and having slots, the outer marginal wall of each slot being the flange of said cover, combined with the metallic straps secured to the walls of the box, the free ends of said straps vdesigned to be passed through said slots and bent over the edge of the covereiiange and bearing against the outer faces thereof, the flange of the cover overlapping and designed to hold the interlocking tongues at the upper edge of the box, in their engaging slots, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
