I L. s. STAPLES PACKAGING CONTAINER Filed March 16, 1925 H 11v VEIVTOR A TTORNE Y UNITED 7 STATES PATENT OFFICE? Patented Jan. 22, 1929.

portions of the box when it is desired to dis-i play or serve the contents of the compartments.
The novel details of construction of the invention will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a perspective View of a box constructed in accordance with my invention showing the cover members, or flaps, for the two compartments in raised position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the two cover flaps in compartment closing position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the closed box, and
Fig. i is a fragmentary, sectional View through one wall of the box and through one end portion of one of the cover flaps.
The invention consists of two rectangular members 1 and 2, each having a bottom wall, two side walls and two end walls. Two adj acent side walls 3 and i for the members 1 and 2 are hinged together at their edges as inclicated at 5. Projecting inwardly from each hinged edge is a ledge portion 6, for the member 1, and a ledge portion 7 for the member 2, The ledge portions extend the lengths of the members 1 and 2 and at their outer edges they carry closing cover flaps 8 and 9 which are hinged to the ledges 6 and 7 as indicated at 10 and 11. The cover flaps 8 and 9 are wide enough to cover the opening at the top of each member 1 and 2 and they are adapted to be held against accidental movement by stops formed in the boxwall for each compartment as indicated at 12 and 13. The stops may be made by pressing in the material so that they slightly project inwardly from the inner faces of the side walls 14 and 15.
The material from which the cover flaps 8 and 9 is made will have suflicient flexibility to allow the edges of the cover flaps to be sprung in under the projections 12 and 13. Near the outer edge of each cover flap is an opening, these openings being designated 16 and 17 so that the finger of a persons hand maybe inserted in one or both of the openings. This will enable the person handling the box to exert aslight pull outwardly on the cover flap so it will spring out of engagement with the stop to enable it to be swung up beyond vertical position. When the two cover flaps are swung up to the position shown in Fig. '1 the openings 16 and 17 will be substantially in alignment, then the finger may be introduced through both openings, the cover flaps serving at this time for handles or supports for the open trays or compartments so that the contents of the box may be accessible and be served or displayed in a convenient manner.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the box may be conveniently and inexpensively made, that the cover flaps serve a dual purpose in that they normally maintain the con tents within the trays or compartments but are movable to positions to provide handles or supports for the trays or compartments and furthermore that the invention is so constructed that candies and the like may be packaged for shipment and dispensed or served from the same container.
While I have shown the compartments as rectangular it is obvious that the box may be made in other shapes.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A box comprising two tray members secured together by a hinge joint, a reinforcement strip comprising a ledge member secured in the open upper end of each tray between the end walls and the side wall adj acent said hinge joint, cover flaps having inner edges hinged to the outer exposed edges of said reinforcement ledge members and adaptedto lie wholly within the trays, the outer edges of said flaps adapted for abutting over the said hinge joint, and said flaps having openings adjacent their outer edges to admit means for engaging the flaps to lift the same, said openings being substantially aligned when the flaps are in abutting position, to receive a box supporting means therethrough.
2. A box comprising two tray members secured together by ahinged joint, a reinforcement strip comprising a ledge member secured in the upper open end of each tray between the end walls and the side wall adjacent said hinge joint, cover flaps having inner edges hinged to the outer exposed edges of said rement to receive a box supporting means thereinforcement ledge members and adapted to through when the-flaps are in abutting posilie Wholly within'the trays, the outer edges of tion, and means adapted to yieldingly retain W said flaps adapted for abutting over said the flaps in covering position.
