Be it known that I, J AMES H. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi- 1 cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Receptacles or Toilet-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to small receptacles, suchas are adapted toserve as toilet cases for containing hair-pins, needles, or the like, the case being adapted to be conveniently carried in a shopping bag or traveling case.

The primary object-of the invention is to provide a receptacle of the character indicated which will serve asa convenient means for holding such small toilet articles, or the like, as one may desire to carry therein, and which may be conveniently manipulated to display the articles, or portions thereof, at either end of the case, andenable them to be readily removed for use when desired.

A further object is to provide means whereby the hinged box-portions employed will be automatically: closed or brought into alinement in the operation of sliding the cover in one direction to a closed position.

Further objects will appear from the detailed description herein given.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in-which Figure 1 represents a bottom perspective view of my improved receptacle or toilet case in closed condition; Fig. 2, a top perspective view, showing one end of the receptacle open; Fig. 3, a top perspective view showing the other end of the receptacle open; Fig. 4, a bottom perspective view of the sliding cover employed; Fig. 5,,an inner perspective view of the-sectionally constructed box employed; Fig. 6, a perspective View of a partition member adapted to be inserted in the main boxsection, so that the box will be divided into compartments; Fig. 7, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 7 of Fig. 3,- showing the receptacle in inverted position; Fig. 8, a perspective view of a modified form of the receptacle in open condition; Fig. 9, a longitudinal sectional View taken as indicated at line 9 of Fig. 8. the dotted lines illustrating one section of the box swung to angular position; and Fig. 10, a perspective view of a needle holder adapted to be contained in the main box-section of the structure shown in Figs. 8 and Referring to Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the lxiinproved receptacle or toilet case comprises a sectionally constructed box orbody A, :which is open at its top side; and a sliding cover, closure, or stop B, which-is adapted to slide longitudinally with relation to the box :in either direction, within certain limits, tofexp'ose the contents of the chambers at opposite ends-of the box.

The box A, in the form shown, comprises a main section 1 and a hinged endsection 2, which is united to the section 1 by a pivot 3.

The box-section 1 comprises a-bott0m portion 4, side flanges 5, and an end-flange 6.- }In the lower portion of the box-section l is located the partition 7, comprising a cross- =member 8 equipped with up-standing flanges Q9, aflordinga space between them, said member 8 having its end equipped with down wardly extending flanges or spacing memhere 10. The members 10 space the partition 8 with relation to the flange 6, thus'ai- .fording a chamber 11 adjacent the end flange 6. The space 12 between the flanges 9 isadapted to receive the lower or inner ends of hair-pins, or other small articles, the opposite ends of which may project above or beyond the hinge 3, so as to be readily acc'es-- sible when the receptacle is in the condition shown in Fig. 2. 1

The end section 2 of the box A comprises a bottom portion 13, side flanges 14 and an end flange 15. The hinge 3 comprises eyes 16 and 17 with which the box- sections 1 and 2 are provided,respectively, at the abutting edges of their bottom portions, and a pintle 18 which extends through said eyes. The side flanges 5 and'14 of the box-section-are provided with out-turned flanges 19 and 20, respectively. The flanges 20 are preferably reduced, cut away, or beveled, as'indicated at 21.

The cover, or closure, B, preferably corn prises a sheet-metal plate 22 having down wardlv and inwardly turned guide-flanges 23 at its lateral edges adapted to engage the guide- flanges 19 and 20 of the bo-x-sections-.- At that end of the closure B, which is adapted to cover the box-section 2, box-section actuating members 24 depend fromthe guide-flanges 23. The members 24 are adapted to embrace freely the side-flanges 14 of the box-section 2, and have at their a needle package 29. This is shown as comlower ends inturned flanges 25, which are adapted to engage the lower surface of the bottom portion 13 of the box-section 2.

One of the side flanges 5 has a portion of the metal struck outwardly at an intermediate point to afford a stop 26 which is adapted to co-act with one of the members 24, and also with a stop 27 which depends from the corresponding guide-flange 23 near the opposite end of the cover.

Assuming the receptacle to be in the condition shown in Fig. 2, such articles as hairpins having their inner ends contained in the space 12 above the partition 8 will have their opposite ends fully exposed and projecting beyond the hinge 3, so that the articles may be freely withdrawn, as desired. When the closure B is slid longitudinally from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the members 24, engaging the end-section 2 of the box will automatically swing the section 2 into alinement with the section 1. By continuing the sliding movement of the cover when it reaches the position shown in Fig. 3, the chamber 11, which may contain safety pins, beauty pins, or the like, will be opened or exposed. The movement of the cover in one direction is limited by a member 24 engaging the stop 26, and is limited in the other direction by the stop 27 engaging the stop 26. This is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The purpose of beveling the flanges 20 at the points 21 is to facilitate the entrance of the flanges with in the guides of the cover when the boxsection 2 is automatically swung to the closed position in moving the cover from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1. It is obvious that one of the members 24 may be dispensed with, if desired.

In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9 A? represents a sectionally constructed box of the same construction as that shown in Fig. 5, except that the stop 26 is dispensed with; and B represents a closure similar to the closure B, except that the stop 27 is dispensed with. The cover B is free to slide longitudinally on the box in both directions, so as to expose the contents at either end of the box. For the purpose of limiting the movement of the cover B in both directions, its plate portion 22 is provided centrally with an inwardly struck boss or stop 28, which is adapted to engage the enclflange of the box-section 1 when the cover is in the position shown in Fig. 9, and is adapted to engage the end-flange of the boxsection 2 when the cover is moved to the other limit of its movement to expose or open the lower end of the box-section 1. The receptacle shown in Figs. 8 and 9 may be made of small size and adapted .to contain prising a plate 30 having the upper portions of its lateral edges equipped with flanges which are curved or bent to afford a loop or roll 31, within which is a piece of felt 32 through which the needles 33 are passed. The dotted lines 34 indicate the outlines of a series of needles of graduated size. The needle package'29 may be pressed into the box-section 1, so that the upper end of the needles will project above the hinge 3, so that the needles will be readily accessible when the box-section 2 is in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 9. On the other hand, when the cover is moved to the opposite limit of its travel, the points of the needles will be exposed in the lower end of the box-section 1. The cover B is provided with the sameautomatic closing devices 24 employed in connection with the cover B.

From the foregoing description it is evident that I have provided an exceedingly handy receptacle, which possesses great convenience of manipulation and can be manufactured at small expense. If desired, the device may be constructed of sheet aluminum, thus having an attractive appearance and but small weight.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art. I

What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A receptacle comprising a box having a main section and a swinging section provided with guide-members, and a cover having lateral guide-members adapted to engage said first-named guide-members, said cover equipped with means for automatically moving the swinging section into alinement with the main section when the cover is slid over the main section and into position to engage the swinging section.

2. A receptacle comprising a pair of boxsections having their bottom portions hinged together at their abutting ends and having their side-flanges provided with guideflanges, a sliding top co-acting with said box-sections and having Lateral guideflanges engaging said first-named guideflanges, said top equipped with a depending member adapted to automatically swing one of the box-sections into alinement with the other when the top is slid to the closed position.

3. A receptacle comprising a main boxsection and an end box-section having the abutting ends of their bottom portions guide-flanges, one of the guide-flanges, of said top equipped with a depending member adapted to engage said end box-section and swing it into alinement with the main boxsection in the operation of moving the top into position to cover said end box-section.

4. A receptacle comprising a main boxsection and an end box-section having abutting ends of their bottom portions hinged together and having their side-flanges equipped with out-turned guide-flanges, and a cover co-acting with said box-sections and having its lateral edge-portions equipped with guides embracing said guide-flanges, one of the guides of said cover carrying a depending member having an inturned lower end adapted to engage the bottom- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the portion of the end box-section and automatically swing the end box-section into alinement with the main box-section in the operation of moving the cover into position to close the end box-section.

5. In a receptacle of the class described, a removable partition adapted to divide said receptacle into separate compartments and comprising a trough-shaped member having up-standing sides open at their ends and having the ends of its bottom portion turned downwardly to form supporting legs adapted to rest against the end of the receptacle.
