(Cl. 22038) This invention relates to containers, particularly to a type used by women for carrying cosmetics; such as face powder, rouge, mascara and the like.- Containers of the said type are commonly known as compacts and usually carry thereon as part of the device a mirror, the face of which is-usually closed against the contents of the container. As a consequence, the mirror is rarely clear of smudge and does not clearly reflect.

To overcome this objection is one of the objects of this invention.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a container comprising a novel cover means, slideable upon the container and adapted, when open, to automatically assume a tilted position for the purpose hereinafter described.

Another object is to provide a container of the character described which may be adapted to uses other than those mentioned, such as carrying cigarettes, candies, and the like.

Another object of this invention is to provide a container as described, having a mirror thereon, the said mirror being attached to the container so that the reflecting surface faces outwardly, thus making same usable without opening the container.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a container of the character described which comprises a sealing means to prevent leakage therefrom.

A further object is the provision of a container comprising a new and novel sliding and pivotal cover connection.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of an organizationin which the constituent elements are so arranged structurally and functionally as to assure improved results .with materials and members which may be manufactured at reasonable cost, may be easily assembled and which will be efiicient in operation with minimum wear to the parts.

The novel features considered characteristicof my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional object and advantages thereof, will best be' understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring in detail to the parts, H designates a container having front, and rear walls I2 and I3 respectively, and a partition I6 which divides the container into a large compartment I! and a small compartment I8. A cover I9 is attached to the saidcontainer and is slidably movable on ledge 20 formed upon the sides I4 and I5 of said container I I. The said cover I 9 is also slideably movable and carried upon a carrier member 2I which is pivotally attached at 22 in the small compartment I8. The said carrier member 2I is formed at its ends with clips 23 (Figures 6, 8 and 9, slideably engaging in grooves 24 formed upon the edges of the said cover I9.

The carrier member 2| is normally held in a horizontal position (see Fig. 3) by virtue of the engaging cover I9. When, however, the cover is moved backwardly until its front edge clears the partition I6, a spring 25 pulls the front end of the cover downwardly to tilt it to a position approximately as shown in Fig. 4.. The spring 25 is attached at its ends to the memberZI as at 26 while at its center the spring is hooked over a lip 21 formed upon the bottom of the container. (See Figs. 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9.) Pins 28 are formed upon the lower side of this cover I 9 near the front edge thereof and adapted to engage in recesses 29 (Figures 5, 6 and 8), formed in said carrier member 2I to limit the rearward movement of said cover.
