The invention relates in general to containers, and more particularly to vanity cases for holding cosmetics and the like.
According to one form of the invention the e vanity case comprises a pair `of hinged covers with a mirror section therebetween. The vanity case may be of general rectangular configuration withV straight side walls, cerg tain of which may be continuousfrom tcp to bottom thereby providing]uninterrupted surfaces. The mirror section may have a spring catch secured thereto for holding both covers closed in such manner that, upon operating the catch, either cover may be opened eX- posing, at the will of the user, either rouge or powder, The cosmetics may be in the form of compacts which may be held in the covers by a special spring lugconstruction operated by a common pin, greatly facilitating removal of the compactsrwhenever itis desired to insert a refill, and providing an attractive appearance.4 Furthermore, one or both of the covers may have at its exterior surface a design member of 'open construction, the coverand design being cf different appearance or color to produce contrasting effects.
` The invention also consists in certain new and original features ofv construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed. v
CTI
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed yout inthe claims vappended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, the mode of'its operation and thefniannerv of its organization may be better understood byreferring to the following description taken inV connection with the accompanying drawings forminga part thereof, in which Fig. 1 is a perspectiveV of the box closed;
Fig. ,2 is a perspective of the vbox opened exposing one side for use;
Fig. 3 is a section through the box with one cover open;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the box open with Vthe mirror in raised position;
Fig is a perspective of the bezel;4 5o Fig. 6 is a detail ofthe spring lug; Fig.` 7
Vis a perspective of the catch secured to the mirror; and y Y Fig. 8 isa detail showing the manner of mounting the design member.
In the following description and inthe claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as thejart will permit.
Like reference characters denote like parts ce in the severall figuresy of the drawings.
-In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, a practical commercial embodiment of the invention is shown, but as such illustration is primarily for purposes of disclosure, it will he under stood that the structure may be modified in various respects without departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Referring now to the drawing, the vanity case comprises a base cover 1, a top cover 2 and a metal mirror 3 all hinged togetherby the same hinge, each part having hinged knucllessecured thereto and a common pintle 4 passing through all the knuckles. As shown in Fig. 1, the boxis straight sided, of general rectangular configuration having beveled corners and beveled'edges.
The base cover 1 comprises a bottom wall so 5, a front wall 6, backwall 9 and side walls 7, the side walls extending substantially the entire height ofthe bor.V Thecorners of the coverl are beveled forming small bevel walls 8. VThe edges of the cover are alsobeveled asV indicated at 18.
"Disposed within the cover. is a bezel member-.10, comprisinga fiat piate19 fitting theV side walls of the b'oX and having a shallow recess 11.*at its frontsedge. The bezel member 9o has a depending cylindrical wall 12 which has a lug 13 pressed out and a hole 14 diametrically opposite `the lug. A band 15' of spring material is riveted to the cylindrical wall, this band having a VV-shaped lug ldisposed in the hole 14. Over the band, near the lug 16, theplate is provided with an opening 17, so positioned that, when a common pin (not shown) is ,inserted therein,` the pin Vwedges itself between the band 15 and wall 100 12. As the pin is pushed into the hole 1T, the band 15 is Jforced awaj.7 from the wall l2 against the elasticity of the band to remove the lug 16 from the space bounded by the cylindrical wall.
A compact 2O which may be of the type comprising a backing 21 having a base and conical wall 22, filled with compact ed cosmetic material 23, such as powder, is positioned within the cylindrical wall 12 and held beneath the iixed lug 13 and spring pressed lug 16.
The top cover 2 is of' a construction similar to the base cover 1, having a front wall 28, a back Wall 29, side walls 30, bevel walls 31 and bevel edges 32. rlhe front and back walls and bevel walls align with the correspending Walls of thebase cover when the case is closed, but the side walls 30 slide within the side walls 7 on the base cover, the side walls 7 extending up to the beveled edges 32 of the top cover as shown.
The top cover 2 has a bezel member 34 with a pin operated spring lug, a compact 35 filled with cosmetic material which may be rouge, all being of a similar construction to similar elements in the base cover. However, it desired, the opening in the bezel 34 and the compact 35 may be smaller t-han similar parts in the base cover.
The mirror section comprises a mirror 3 of sheet metal polished on both sides to provide mirror surfaces and having an integral hinge knuckle through which the common pintle 4 passes. This section has a shallow recess 36 in its edge. A catch member 37 which comprises an elastic strip 38 having ears 39 atthe ends thereof is provided, these ears being disposed on opposite sides of the mirror and riveted by rivets 40 or otherwise secured to the mirror section. The spring strip 38 has upper and lower catch lugs 41 and 42 for engaging recesses 43 and 44 formed respectively in the top and base covers. A flat linger piece 45 has a reduced portion passing through the spring strip 38 and riveted thereover. This finger piece seats in the recess 46 and 47, half in each cover when the case is closed.
One or both covers may be provided with special ornamental design plate 48 of open network construction illustrated in Fig. 1 by the letter R, which has rivet portions 49 secured thereto passing through the bottom wall of the cover and riveted thereover, as illustrated in Fig. 8. The cover may have a finish of one appearance, while the design plate may have a iinish of another appearance which may contrastsharply with the appearance of the cover, producing a striking and pleasing ei'ilect. For instance, the cover and design may be of different metals, or different colored enamels may be applied to these members.
It will be seen that the mirror divides the box into two compartments, each entirely separate from the other and that suiiicient space is provided in each compartment for a powder puff. The construction is such that either cover may be removed from the mirror at will, providing access to the compartment desired without interfering with the other compartment. rThe box is of striking appearance because of the smooth sides presented by the side walls extending substantially the entire height of the box. rlhe appearance is also improved by the design ot contrasting colors as described above. Furthermore, the compacts may be removed very simply and the holding devices are hidden from view and take up but little space. In short, a very neat and compact vanity box is provided holding considerable material and yet presenting a neat ant graceful appearance.
While certain novel features of the inven tion have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spiritot' the invention.
