' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY v. HOANDREWS, F BROOKLYN. NEW YORK.
'VANITY CASE.
' applicati@ mea september 22, i922. serial No. 589,852.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARY V. McANnRnws, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough yof Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and lmroved Vanity Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to vanity cases and has for an object to provide a lig t, compact and easily accessible construction adapted to contain a number of diiferent articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vanity casedivided into a plurality of sections, each section forming compartments resenting mirrors and cosmetics.
1A sti l further object, more specifically, is to provide a vanity case in which there is provided a mirror at a convenientplace for certain groups of articles carried in the respective parts of the case.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a top` plan view of the case open and showing the respective parts of said compartments.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing dii'erent compartments.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section throu h a vanity case similar to .that shown in Figure 1 with the parts partially open, the same being on a larger scale than that shown in Figure 1.
Fi re 4 is a side view of the complete box close certain vparts being broken away for illustrating the arrangement and construction of the fastening means.
Figure 5 is a side view of a tray embodyin certain features of the invention.
eferring to the accompan ing drawings by numeral, 1 indicates the ttom section of a vanity case which forms what may be termed the lower compartment and 2 the top or lid which forms what may be termed the upper compartment. A division plate 3 is hinged at 4 to the top and bottom 1 and 2 which are connected b the same hinge. 'Ilie plate 3 is formed with laterally extending annular flanges 5 and 6, flange 6 having a central extension 7 formed with a raised portion 8 adapted to snap intothe pressed out portion 9 in the bottom section 1. This structure acts as aresilient lock for holding the parts normally in assembled position. The flange 5-is provided with a pressed out portion 10 adapted to snap into the pressedy out portion 11 in the upstanding annular flange of the top section 2 as indicated particularly in' Figures 3 and 4. The flange in addition acts as a housing or auxiliary compartment for receiving a supply of powder or other cosmetic 12 whichis mounted on a suitable plate 13 of metal or other desired material. This plate and supply ot cosmetics are held in place by a spring 131 pressing against the edge thereof so that there will be a comparatively tight fit. A suitable powder pull" is loosely mounted on the pack 12 and the depth of the cover section 2 is sufficient to take care of these two members and in additionto take care of a mirror 14 held in place by a suitable flange 15 whereby when the case is open as shown in Figure 1, the person using the device may use the powder puff and powder 12 and at the same time use the mirror 14.
When it is desired to use the articles in the compartment or section 1, the dividing structure or plate 13 and associated parts are moved over until the pressed out portion 10 snapsinto the pressed out portion 11 and then the parts are open so that they will appear as shown in Figure 2. This will allow the person using the device to look into the mirror 16 held in the ange 6 by a suitable U-shaped supporting ring 17 said rin being soldered or otherwise rigidly connected to the flange 6. Arranged in the lower compartment or bottom section 1 is a tray 18 which tray is provided with depressions o1' sockets 19 and 20, the depression or socket 19 being preferably annular as shown in Figure 2 so as to receive the pack 21 which consists of a supply of rouge or other desired cosmetic and a supporting back 22 of any desired material, as for instance, cardboard or metal. This pack is held firmly in place by a suitable flat spring 23 whereby the pack normally cannot be displaced but whic may be'removed at any time. The depression or socket 20 is designed to carry a container 24 containing a lip stick 25. A resilient cli 26 is connected with the tray 18 by a suitable rivet 27 whereby the clip may be raised slightly and rotated whenever desired to remove the container 24.
It is, of course, evident that the container 24 could be eliminated and any other article placed therein, as for instance, a lip stick without the container. The tra 18 is made of such a size as to snugly fit t e section 1, which tray in addition to the sockets 19 and 20 is provided with depending sections 28 lll) which are more or less resilient and which press against the side walls of the bottom section l and in that manner retain the tra in place. It will be noted that the depen ing section28 is longer than the other sections 28 in order to provide a space 29 for receiving the portion 7. a
rlhe sha-pe of the case as far as the exterior appearance is concerned may be varied Widely without departing from the spirit of the invention. Inteiiorly the shape also ma be changed provided the arrangement `an the construction of the respective parts are not materially changed whereby the same results will be secured.
What claim is 1. A vanity case, comprising a casing provided ivitli a bottom section, a top section, a division member, a hinge for hinging both 2@ of said sections and divisionr member tog y locking with gether, said' division member having oppositely extending annular flanges, one of said flanges having a resilient projection and a" )ressed out portion, the other of said anges eing formed with a pressed out portion and said top and bottom sections each being provided with a ressed out portion for intertlie .pressed out portions on the division member whereby the parts are normally held in :i closed position.
2.' In a vanity case of the character described, a tray formed with a depression foi' receiving a pack, resilient iiieaus for holdlng'said pac:l in said depression, said' tray being formed with a second depression for f receiving an articleq and a clamping meniber for clamping said article in said second mentioned depression.
