This invention relates to vanity boxes, such as are adapted to be carried in a ladys handbag, and has for an object, to provide a device of this character which will be neat and attractive in appearance, simple in construction and in which a maximum of the internal capacity of the box may be utilized for carrying the cosmetic and puffs for applying the same.

Itis also an object of the invention to provide a construction `in which several types or kinds of cosmetic may be carried in aA single box, and without increasing the thickness of the box, and the box may be constructed-in the thin models now so popular.

It is an another object of the invention, to provide a box in which there are separate containers for the different cosmetics, which can be easily renewed when the supply of any one is exhausted, and which also has means for retainingthe puffs in position in their respective containers when the box is open.

With the foregoing andv other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully disclosed in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In these drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the box showing it in the open position, the section being substantially on line 1-1 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly different construction of the box.

The box shown is of substantially rectann gular shape, although it may be of other shapes if desired, and comprises hinged body means for holding the cosmetic in the box. 1t is very often ydesirable to carry more than onetype or kind of cosmetic. For example, it may be desirable to have both a white powder and a tinted powder, or it might be desirable to have an unscented powder and a scented powder, and so forth. 1 l have therefore, so constructed a container for this powder` that two of them may be mounted in one of the sections of the box. In the present instance in Figs. 1 and 2 they are shown as mounted in the section 6, and they are substantially rectangular in shape. These containers are in the form of trays 10 and may be made of sheet metal, such as aluminum, and they comprise a bot-tom wall 11 and side walls 12 about the periphery thereof. These trays are therefore, capable of containing a powder 13 inthe form lof a compact which is formed by mixing the powder with moisture, and permitting it to harden in the tray. In the arrangement shown the two trays 10'are the same size and shape and therefore, may be made from the same dies, and either tray may be placed in either of the two positions.l At one ofthe longitudinal side walls represented by the numeral 14, there is an ear or lug .15 which extends outwardly and laterally from the upper edge of this wall, and lit is located to one side of the longitudinal center of the tray. Thus when inserting the trays in the box, the two trays are reversed so that the two walls 14 areadj acent tofeach other and at the center of thebox with the earv or lug 15 of each tray extending laterally over the upper edge of the wall 14 of the other tray and overhanging the space therein as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, so that a powder puff 16 may be inserted under this ear and be retained thereby in the tray and in the box. By this arrangement the puff for each type-of cosmetic may be retained in the proper container carrying that particular cosmetic. It will bev seen by this arrangement that the two containers or trays with their respective' puifs may be mounted in the boxwithout increasing its thickness over the box vin which only one typeof powder is used. rThe trays are retained in the box by any suitable means such as small lugs 17 punched inwardly in the side Cil walls of the box over the upper edges of the trays. The two trays may be simultaneously inserted in the box as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 1 by placing their outer sides in the box with the center portions together and raised, and then merely forcing them down into the box over the retaining lugs 17, the sheet metal walls yielding suiiiciently-to permit this. The tabs or handles for lifting the puffs are indicated at 18.

In the box construction of Figs. 1 and 2, the other section 7 is also made of suflicient thickness to carry a tray or container 19 carrying the compact 20 with the puff 21 for use therewith. In this box there is a mirror 22 pivoted on the hinge 8, so that it may lie over either the cover or body section as desired, andthis mirror may be a metal plate polished on both sides or a glass mirror. A catch 23 is pro- ,f vided adapted to cooperate with a shoulder 24 formed by cutting a slit in the front wall of the base section, the catch 23 being mounted on a spring bar 25 secured by any suitable means such as rivets 26 and depressible by means of a thumb piece 27 to'release it.

In the form shown in Fig. 3 the cover 28 is not formed to carry a compact. t is merely of suiiicient thickness to carry a mirror 29, the lower or body section 6 being the same as in the forms of Figs. 1 and 2. This construction makes a very thin box.

The trays 10 may be filled with the cosmetic such as the molded powder, and sold as refills, which as will be apparent may be readily inserted inthe box after the old trays have been removed.

In Fig. 6 is shown a box in which only one of the trays 10 is used. The two sections 6 and 7 of this box are the same as in Figs. 1

and 2 but only one tray 10 is used in the section 6, which is shown as the cover section. Therefore, the puff for use of the powder` in this `tray is mounted in the vacant halt of the box section as shown at 16in Fig. 6 and is retained in the box section by the ear or lug 15, which in this case overhangs this vacant portion. The tray may be held in the box by the lugs 17 the same as in the other arrangements shown. Y

Having thus set forth thenature of my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a vanity boX, a substantially rectangular section, a second section hinged thereto, and a pair of separate and independent trays for holding cosmetic arranged side by side ink one of said sections, said trays having upright side walls about their peripheries, the wall on one edge of each tray'having an extension over the adjacent tray and located to one side of the center line of the tray to provide a holder to overhang a puff1 and hold `it in said tray.

2. In a vanity box, a cosmetic tray comprising a bottom wall .and upright side walls about its periphery, a similar and independent tray adjacent thereto, one of said side walls being provided with an ear forming an extension of its upper edge. and extending outwardly therefrom to overlie the adj acent tray to providel a holder for a puff in the latter tray.

3. In a vanity box, a reiill cosmetic holder for insertion therein comprising a tray having a bottom wall and upright side walls about its periphery, a similar and independent tray adjacent thereto and an ear on one of said side walls spaced laterally from the center line of the-tray and adapted to extend laterally over the adjacent tray and adapted to have a powder putt inserted thereunder to retain it in the latter tray.

4. In a vanity box, hinged body and cover sections, and a pair of separate and independent cosmetic trays arranged side by side in one of said sections, said trays cach comprising bottom walls and upright walls about the peripheries thereof, the adjacent side walls of the two sections each having an ear overhanging the adjacent tray and adapted to have a powder puii" inserted thereunder to retain it in the tray.

5. In a vanity box, substantially rectangular body and cover sections hinged together a pair of separate and independent similar rectangular cosmetic holding trays inserted side by side in one of said sections, said trays being dish shaped members having upright side walls about their peripheries, the two adjacent side walls of the two trays each having an extension at its upper edge extending laterally over the other wall and tray to overhang and retain a powder puii in said tray, and means for securing the trays in the section.

6. In a vanity box, substantially rectangular body and cover sections hinged together, and a pair of separate and independent removable trays for holding cosmetics arranged side by side in one of said sections, said trays each having upright side walls about their peripheries, the'wall on one edge of each tray having an extension over the wall of the adjacent tray located to one side of the center line to serve as handles in removing a tray from the section and tor provide a holder to overhang a pui and hold it in said tray.
