Application filed-Aprilfl,
To all wiioinc't may concern Be it known that 1, Saracen Vi DENNY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of lriichigan, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in. ajCoInbinat-ion Cigarette and Match Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a combined cigarette and match container and has for its object the provision of av device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, and highly eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a combined cigarette and match container of means for pressing the matches and cigarettes into close engagement with each other to maintain the same in upright position.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a combined cigarette and matchcontainer of a separate compartment having its. own base upon which the matches may rest.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the invention showing the lid moved to inoperative position,
Fig. i is a side elevational View of the invention,
Fig. 3 is a longitudiiuil, sectional view oil the invention.
"Ihoinvention in its preferred form comprises a container 7, having separate compartments 8 and 9 formed therein, the compartment 8 being adapted for the reception of cigarettes 18. adapted for the reception of matches 17 which are positioned in upright position. In constructing the container it is preferred that the same may be made of the proper dimensions to receive an entire package of cigarettes so that it will not be necessary to removethe same from the package before placing them in the container.
The compartn'ient 9 is formed by a partition wall 10 which extends the full width of the container 7 and which is also provided The compartment 9 is 192414 Serial No. 704,310...
with a base 11-, spaced tromthe bottom of the container proper. Mounted on the wall 10,,atits. upper edge is a doubled over spring metallic member. so to provide two down; wardly, projecting spring. leaveslQ and 13, one v ot' which isadapted: to press against, the matches 17 to maintain the same in upright position and the other leaf 13 is adapted for pressing against the cigarette to maintain the-same in upright position. It is apparent that if an entire package of cigarettes is placed in the container the need tor the leaf 13 to maintain the cigarettes in upright position is dispensed with. However, its presence will not diminish to any extent the utility of the container for carrying a full package of cigarettes.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 the leaves-12 and 13 are shown in their compressed position, these leaves being adapted tor spreading to assume a more nearly horizontal position than shown in Fig. 2 when the same are not under tension.
The container is provided with a hinged lid 16 adapted to close upon the container 7 and engage the head 16 formed thereon. This lid 16 is provided with spring hinges so that upon the release of the projection 15 formed in the container 7 from the pocket formed in the lid by bulging as at 1 1, the lid will automatically be moved to open the container. Any suitable spring connection may be adapted for use with a lid 0t this class.
The bottom oi. the container is provided with a pair of channel members l9i positioned at opposite sides adapted for the loose reception of a scratching member for striking the matches on.
With a container, such as shown, a simple structure is provided and there furnished means for carrying cigarettes and matches in a handy, and easily accessible relativepo sition.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise term of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variationsand modifications as come within the scope oi the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A container-of the class described comprising a plurality of compartments, one of said compartments being of less depth than uni-J the other and provided with a side wall; and a metallic resilient member doubled upon itself and positioned on said side wall, one portion thereot being adapted to extend in one compartment for engaging material placed therein for maintaining the same in upright position 'and the other portion thereof being positioned in the other compartment for engaging mate-rial placed therein for maintaining the same in upright position.
2. A receptacle of the class described comprising a containing portion having a plurality of compartments formed therein one 15 01'' said compartments being of less depth than the other and provided with a base in spaced relation to the base of the receptacle proper; a partition wall projecting upwardly from said base for forming the other wall of the compartment; a metallic resilient member doubled upon itself and mounted on the upper portion of said upwardly projecting Wall and projecting downwardly therefrom into each of said compartments, said downwardly projecting portions being nor mally in spaced relation at their ends to said partition wall.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification.
SAMUEL V. DENNY.
