Description

Patented Jan, S, 1925,
y ist HOLDER.
Application inea January 2s, 1924. serial no. scarna. v
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City, and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to combination holders and has for its object the provision of a novel device adapted to serve as a holder for a box of matches of standard variety and equipped with a plurality of trays which may be used for holding cigarettes, cigars, playing cards or other articles, the device being well adapted for use in the kitchen or in card rooms, dens or other places where smokers congregate.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be so constructed as to be set upon a table, shelf or the like or to be hung upon the wall and which will be not only simple and inexpensive to manufacture, but also neat and attractive in appearance.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing it in use and holding a variety of articles,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof empty,
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken from front to back and Figure 4 is a vertical section at right angles t0 Figure 3.
Referring more particular to the drawings I have shown the device as comprising an inverted T-shaped back 10 to which is secured a T-shaped body 11. Secured to the ends of the back and bottom are upright sidepieces -12, and secured at the edges of the long portion of the back are side pieces 13 which extend forwardly and which are secured upon the side edges of the projecting forward portion of the bottom. The side pieces 13 are of much greater height than the side pieces 12 and secured between them is a partition 14 which terminates considerably above the bottom to define a compartment 15 of a size to receive a match box A of standard pattern. Secured to the forward edges of the longer portion of the bottom is a front member 16 which is also secured to the forward edges of the side pieces 12 and 13, and this frontmember is formed with an opening 17 accommodating the forwardly projecting portions of the side pieces 1.3. This front member 16 defines with the side pieces 13 and partition 14 a compartment 18 which has a bottom 19 and which is adapted t0 containa deck of playing cards or the like indicated at B. Secured at the forward edge of the projecting front portion of the base or bottom 11 is a small front piece 20 which is secured to the prejecting forward edges of the side members 13 so as to define a tray 21 onto which matches will pass when the shuck of the match box is pulled up. The front piece 20 has its upper edge cut away at 22 to facilitate picking up the matches on the tray.`
It is preferable to provide a sheet or strip 23 of sand paper or the like on the front member 16 above the opening 17 upon which the matches may be struck.
The above described structure provides compartments 24 at the sides of the match boX compartment and these are well adapted for holding boxes or packs of cigarettes indicated at C, together with cigars indicated at D and other articles. The device may be set on a table, shelf or the like or it may be provided at the top of the back 10 with a hole 25 permitting it to be hung upon a nail on the wall or other place.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simply constructed and inexpensive combination holder which will be neat and attractive in appearance as well as very convenient in service.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim: e.
A device of the character described comprising a bottom of T-shape, an inverted T- shaped back secured at the rear edge of the bottom, side members secured to the side edges 0f the long upright portion of the backVeXtending forwardly across the bottom and secured to the latter at the projecting forward edges thereof, a front member secured to the bottom and extending above the projecting forward ends of said side members, said front member being formed with an opening accommodating said side memn bers, a Qartition extending` across the side members and detininp'ecompartment Jfor the reception of a match box, a front piece secured to the forward edges of the side members and bottom and dening therewith a l0 match tray, said partition co-operatingwith said front member and being connected therewith by a bottom element to define a storage compartment, and side members secured to the back and irst named front member and defining` therewith and with said first named side members compartments for the storage. of articles.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
WILLIAM T. HILL.
