DISPLAY BOX.
Application tiled March 6, 1926. Serial No. 92,829.
This invention relates to boxes for holding and displaying merchandise, and such as are commonly used in grocery Stores for holding cakes and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a box of the above kind with an adjustable bottom wall whereby the merchandise may at all times be supported adjacent the open end or top of the box to present a neat appearance and be convenientl accessible for removal even though the box lie partially emptied.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a follower wall movable longitudinally in the box and adapted to be automatically retained in any desired adjusted position, in combination with the provision of an openine in the end of the box opposite that which 1s provided with a closure or cover, whereby the hand of the user ma be inserted for adjusting the follower wal A still further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bottom or follower wall for display boxes with simple and effective means for retaining the same in adjusted position.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is a perspective view, partly broken away and partly in section, of a display box constructed and provided with an adjustable bottom in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken upon line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of a corner portion of the device shown in Figure 3; j
Figure 5 is a section upon' line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a section upon line 6-6 of 'Figure 5;
Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the spurs or prongs employed for retaining the adjustable bottom or follower wall in adjusted position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing,
8 carrying a hinged or other cover or closure 9 which is provided with a transparent panel 10 for permitting the contents 11 of the box to be displayed to view.
In accordance with the present invention a false bottom or internal follower wall 12 is slidably fitted in the box 5 so as to be adjustable therein toward and from the cover or closure 9. Inorder to facilitate the adjustinent of the bottom or follower wall 12, the normal or permanent bottom 6 of the box 5 is formed with a relatively large central opening 13 for permitting the insertion of the users hand as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1 whereby pressure may be exerted upon the false bottom or follower wall 12 for adjusting the same toward the closure 9 as the contents 11 are exhausted or removed.
When the box is initially filled, the adjustable wall 12 will be disposed upon the bottom 6 and the merchandise placed within the box 5 upon the wall 12. It is thus apparent that as the articles are removed, the wall 12 may be adjusted toward the closure 9 so that the remaining articles will be effectively supported in an orderly manner; adjacent the closure for convenient access.
The invention contemplates the provision of a positive means for retaining the bottom 12 in adjusted position, and such means preferably embodies sheet metal prongs attached to the four corners of the Wall 12 and projecting outwardly to sli htly penetrate the corner portions of the ox 5. As shown, these spurs or prongs 14 are provided upon their inner ends with integral attaching spurs 15 adapted to be passed through and clinched in the corner portions of the wall 12. In this way the outer end portions of the spurs 14 are left free and as said spurs are constructed of resilient sheet metal, they may readily flex or yield for permitting the adjustment of the wall 12 upon application of pressure thereto in the manner mentioned above. In order to allow the spurs 14 to easily iex,
they are preferably attached to thev vunder-v V the under side thereofrv and projecting' beond the corner for engagement inthe adjacent-box corner, said. spurs being desi' bottom upwardly in the boxi and to* bite into edv to flex downwardly upon pressingV the'. alseV the. box corner to prevent downward movementof the false bottom.
2. A box of the character described having an apertured bottom designed to permit the insertion of a hand therethrough, a false bottom within the box having each of the four corners thereof out diagonally, and a resilient spur member secured adjacent each corner and to the under side of said false bottom and projecting beyond the adjacent diagonal. corner for engagement in the adjacent box corner, said spur members being adapted to be flexed downwardly upon moving the false bottom upwardly in the box and to bite into the box corner upon application of downward pressure to the false bottom to prevent retrograde movement of the-same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
