Description

C. C. PLATT Ju'he13; i933.
PACKAGE Filed July 18, 1931 In El.
Patented June 13, 1933 PATENT @FFEQE onAnnEs c ILATT', on NEW YORK, n. Y.
PACKAGE Application filed July 18,
My present invention is especially concerned with improvements in a specialpackage containing or adapted to contaln articles of dissimilar characteristics but peculiarly adapted for use with each other.
The invention finds its preferred embodiment in a package for hose and hose supporters of the general character disclosed in m copending application, Serial No.
540,603, filed May 28th, 1931.
In such application, I disclosed a novel hose and a novel garter which combination cooperated to produce a comfortable, properly supported leg covering assemblage. -For merchandising purposes, it is highly desirable that the socks and garters be sold only together, in that both have unique characteristics and when the garters are used with other socks or the socks are used with other garters, neither are as effective as when used in combination. In other words, if the public is to enjoy to the fullest extent, the benefits conferred by'the invention disclosed in my prior application, it is essential that the two articles be merchandised together, that'is, that a pair of garters be sold with every set of socks.
With this end in view, I have provided a package in which the hose and the supporters- 30 are attractively displayed. u
Contrary to the ordinary practice of packaging individual pairs of' hose loosely in, over-sized boxes, the present invention provides means for compactly storing and exhibiting a set of pairs of hose which are securely held together and which fit the container with comparative snugness, whereby the merchandise will not present a disorder-' ly appearance when the box is opened. The garters are similarly accommodated and certain of the means for preserving the proper respective position of the socks and garters may serve to brace and strengthen the structure of the box and prevent crushing of the goods therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a package of this character of extremely simple and practical construction, well suitr ed to meet the requirements of economical manufacture and characterized by its com- 1931. Serial No. 551,592.
pactness for purposes of shipment and storage and its neatness for purposes of counter display.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, a shallow box is divided into a pair of compartments, one of which occupies the full Width and the major length of the box and is adapted to snugly receive a set of pairs of socks encircled by a common wrapper. The other compartment 69 is a narrow one extending across one end of the box and snugly receiving thesimilarly wrapped garters.
The box is divided into the two compartments andthe height of the garter compartment properly predetermined merely by use of simply formed cardboard insets, which additionally serve as box braces and are fitted and glued or otherwise secured in place.
The invention may be more fully understood from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the package,
Fig. 2 is a similar View with the cover removed and the protective paper sheet lifted upwardly to expose the merchandise.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
' Fig. at is a plan view with the cover of the box removed.
In the drawing, I have used the reference numeral 10 to designate a shallow, rectangular cardboard box, having attached to one edge thereof a fly leaf 11, adapted to be folded down over the box. The box is provided with a conventional flanged cover 12. At one end of the box, I provide a U-shaped, partition-forming member 15 of cardboard or the like. The intermediate portion of this member extends transversely of the box and the legs 16 thereof extend along the sides of the box and abut the end wall thereof, the length of such legs predetermining the spacing of the member 15 (which stands on edge) from the end wall of the box and thus deter mining the width of the end compartment and. the length of the main compartment. Preferably legs 16 are glued or otherwise secured to the inner face of the box. A false bottom 13 in the nature of a card board mem ber bent along longitudinal lines into U shape, and standing upon its flanges 14, fits snugly within the end compartment and con stitutes a false bottom therefor.
A pair of garters 17 suitably folded and encircled by a wrapper 18, are disposed within the small compartment (end compartment) resting on the false bottom 13 and lying substantially flush with the top of the box. In the larger compartment, a set of folded pairs of hose 18 are encircled by a larger wrapper 19, this bundle of hose with their wrapper bein suiiiciently thick to also lie substantially flush with the box top. When the fly leaf 11 hearing instructions or other indicia such as 20, is folded down, the merchandise is concealed by it and the package is completed by applying the cover 12.
By virtue of this arrangement, it will be observed that T have provided. a peculiarly compact and attractive package for the merchandise. The depth of the box as well as the depth of the false bottomed compartment,
' is carefully designed with respect to the articles to be packaged so thatthey will be held securely in position during transportation, it being understood of course, that the use of the encircling bands 18 and 19 materially assist in preventing the merchandise from becoming unfolded or displaced.
The U-shaped members 13 and 15 may be cut out of scrap stock and in addition to forming the compartments and bringing the garters flush with the top of the box, these elements cooperate to afford-a very effective bracing construction. The member 15 serves as a substantial brace across the end of the box. The member 18 in turn not only braces the box transversely, but serves an effective brace between member 15 and the enl wall of the box. Thus the danger of crushing the box at the region of the garter compartment, is avoided. If the box were inadvertently crushed at the end where the garters are carried, there would be considerable danger of permanently damaging the merchandise by bending the garter buckles or slides out of shape, whereas pressure applied to the hosiery itself is unapt to damage the same.
From a merchandising standpoint, the advantages of packaging the stockings and garters together and selling them only 13% gether, has been previously pointed. out, but from the standpoint of the user, the present package is a great convenience in that-lie is automatically provided with a clean pair of garters whenever a set of hose is purchased. Furthermore, the original package or box provides an extremely convenient receptacle in which the hose and garters may be stored or in which they may be stowed in a suit case or other article of luggage.
The box cover may be removed and the open box with the flyleaf placed in the cover. The public, inspecting the goods upon a counter, will thus be able not only to observe the novel nature of the merchandise contained by the box, but to see the advertising matter displayed on the flyleaf, the latter serving substantially to protect the goods from dust and dirt, except when folded back to expose the goods.
By virture of the inherent ability of the individual packages to resist crushing, the shipment of a large number of packages in corrugated board cartons may be effected with little likelihood of damaging the merchandise in transit. When a number of these packages are stacked, one upon the other, in the carton, the individual package braces serve to collectively sustain the carton against crushing.
It will thus be seen that there is herein described a package in which the several features of the invention are embodied, and which in its action attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of pratical use.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely dilferent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matte! contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
