The present invention has to do with improvements in display stands for exhibiting merchandise and the like. The invention has to do especially with improvements in display stands for merchandise which is displayed in cartons or packages such as soap,

Nevertheless, it will be understood that the features of the invention are not limited to use in connection with any particular class of merchandise.

The display stand herein disclosed is preferably made of cardboard or'other paper board material. Other materials may in some cases be found satisfactory.

One feature of the invention relates to the provision of a display stand of knock-down construction such that it can be readily taken apart and folded up and packed into a relatively thin package. In this connection it is a further object to provide a construction which can be very easily reassembledinto the working-condition for displaying the merchandise.

Many classes of merchandise, such as soap, and package cereals are delivered in individual packages which are 'in turn packed and shipped and delivered in packing cases to the stores, where they are displayed and sold. In said stores it is desirable to be able to display these individual packages to best advantage and. in attractive form and appearance. In this connection it is also desirable to make such displays individuall of other merchandise so as to emphasize the individual characteristics of the particular merchandise sought to be displayed. For this purpose it is desirable to provide an individual display stand for the reception and display of such particular merchandise. This function, among others, is performed by the stand to which the present invention relates- The display stand must of itself be of sufficient size and strength to provide a practical support and display for the packages which, in-many cases, are relatively heavy. To ship such astand in its completely assembled form would entail excessive costs for packing'and shipment. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a stand complying with the. necessities of the probble to lem and which is also of such construction that it can be knocked-down and packed into a relatively thin package, the over-alllength of which and width of which are generally comparable to the size of the. packing 'case which contains the packages of merchandise. With such an arrangement it becomes possiship the display stand in association with the packing case and with little if any additional costs and bulk for such shipment. Then the store-keeper or merchant may set up the display stand with little difliculty and no expense, and display the packages thereon.

In connection with the foregoing. it is a further object of the invention to provide a display stand of such construction and size that the packing case can be readily accommodated inside of and underneath the. display stand while the latter is in service in the store or display room. This will make it possible to accommodate the packing case conveniently and without occupying any additional space of the store or displayroom. At the same time, the packing case is so accommodated that it can be readily slipped out from the stand from time to time in order to remove additional packages of merchandise therefrom for display and sale.

Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The stand comprises a bod portion formed of the front panel 6 and t e side panels 7 service. It also includes a horizontal 'or floor portion 12. This latter preferably comprises a series of

sections

13 and 14 together with the transverse reenforcing ribs 15 and 16'and 17. These ribs are of considerable vertical depth or dimension and consequently they have a substantial amount of stiffness and strength and are thus able to support a very considerable load.

The entire top member is: conveniently formed from a single strip or section of mate rial, the development of which-is shown in Figure 4. As therein illustrated each of the

15 and 16 is formed from two companion sections which. fold together into face con tact with each other in order to establish the double thickness with additional strength. The end rib 17 is illustrated as made of a single thickness but the rib may likewise be of double thickness if desired. The

It will be understood that by removing the reenforcing bar 22 "(when the same is provided), the entire rear portion of the display stand is left open and unobstructed. This makes it possible to slide the packing case 25 into place under the stand as shown in Figure 1. This packing case is of such dimensions as respects width, height and depth that it can be comfortably set into place underneath the stand and accommodated beneath the top section thereof, after which the reenforcin bar 22 may be set into place as shown in igure I 1. Whatever individual packages have been previously removed from the packing case are then conveniently supported and carried b the top of the display stand in attractive ashioni New packages can be removed from the packing case from time to time as necessary in a very simple and easy manner and without difficulty.

Preferably the packing case itself is also madeof "paper board, such material being extensively used for this purpose.

As a new article of manufacturega display stand comprising in combination bottom and top sections thebottom section 1neluding front and side panels hingedly con 12; nected together, and the top section including a rear panel together with a series of foranels lying in the same horizontal plane an connected together by a series of vertical transversely extending 1 rib portions, said rib portions extending beyond the side edges thereof, there being openings in the upper portions of the side panels when the parts are hooked together the side panels are retained in position at right angles to the front panel of the base member, and whereby when the parts are disengaged the panels of the base member and the panels and ribs of the top' member may be brought into flat form, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a display stand comprising in combination bottom and top sections, the bottom section including front and side panels hingedly connected together, and the top section including a rear. panel together with a series of forwardly extending shelf panels lying in the same horizontal plane and connected together by a series of vertical transversely extending rib portions, said rib portions extending be- .yond the side edges thereof, the lower edges of the projecting rib portions being notched to hook onto and engage the side panels aforesaid, whereby when the parts are hooked together the side panels are retained in position at right angles to the front panel of the basemember, and whereby when the parts are disengaged the panels of the base member and the panels and ribs of the top member may be brought into fiat form, substantially as described.

. 3. As a new article of manufacture, a dis.- play stand comprising in combination bottom and top sections, the bottom section having side walls, and the top section including a rear panel together with a series of forwardly extending shelf panels lying in the same horizontal plane and connected together by a series of vertical transversely extending rib portions integral therewith, said rib portions extending beyond the side edges thereof, the

edges of the shelf panels and being notched in their lower edges, substantially as described.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a shelf member adapted to be placed upon the upper portion of a suitable support, said shelf member comprising a blank cut to establish a rear panel together with a series of shelf panels, together with intermediate rib members, each rib member being centrally folded and the rib members lying at right angles to the adjoining shelf panels, whereby the rib members are of double thickness and lie at right angles to the shelf panels, and whereby the adjacent edges of the shelf panels are brought substantially into contact with each other to establish a continuous shelf surface, substantially as described.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a shelf member for the purpose specified comprising a back panel, together with a series of shelf panels joined together by intermediate rib sections, each rib section being centrally folded and being joined to the adjacent edges of the shelf panels on lines of fold, whereby the ribs are of double thickness and lie at right angles to the shelf panels, and whereby the adjacent edges of the shelf panels are brought substantially into contact with each other, substantially as described.
