CIGARETTE RECEPTACLE.
Application filcdAugust 4, 1924. Serial No. 729,993.
;Ciga1-ette Receptacle, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette receptacles and has for its principal object to provide an article of manufacture which is adapted to be placed in a package of cigarettes, the article being of such construction as to enable the same to be readily formed into a cigarette receptacle and ashtray when removed from the package of the cigarettes. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette receptacle of the above mentioned character, which will be inexpensive, strong and durable and easily assembled for use as a receptacle and as an ash tray after the same has been removed from a package of cigarettes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette receptacle of the above mentioned character, which comprises a blankof material adapted to be inserted within a package containing cigarettes, means being further provided for forming a receptacle and ash tray'for the cigarettes after the blank has been removed from the package, additional means being provided for supporting the receptacle in spaced relation with respect to the surface upon which the receptacle is placed.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same: v
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank of material showing the same in a package of cigarettes.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the article of manufacture showing the same in assembled position for porting a cigarette.
In the drawing wherein for the purposeof illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a single blank of any suitable light metallic material, the same being subreceiving and sup-' stantially rectangular in design. The blank is provided with the longitudinally extending slots 2 and 3, the ends of which extend inwardly whereby a pair of'longitudinally extending lips or tongues 4 and 5 respectively are formed, the portion of the blank 1 forming the lower edges of the lips or tongues being weakened as illustrated at 6 for the purpose of permitting the tongues or lips to be readily bent up from the blank. It is of course to be ui1derstood thatthe lips or tonguesare normally inthesame plane as the blank. v
Cooperating with the lips or'tongues 4; and -5 which form the .sides of the cigarette receptacle is the substantially dove tail shaped lip or tongue 7 which forms the end of the cigarette receptacle in the manner hereinafter to be more fully described. The lip 7 is formed by providing the transversely extending slot 8 in the blank 1 ad jacent one end thereof and the inwardly inclined slots 9 formed at the ends of the transverse slot 8 A connection 10 is disposedbetween the lip 7 andthe blank 1 for the purpose of normally holding the central portion of the blank and which forms a cigarette receptacl'ein .the same plane as the blank. The connection 210 is of course adapted to be easily severed soas to permit the lip 7 to be bent up'into cooperativeengagement with the lips 4L and 5 respectively. The portion ofthe blank forming the bottom edge of the lip .7 is also weakened as is illustrated at 11 for the same purpose as the weakened portion 6. V
The opposite end of the blank 1 is provided with the transversely extending spaced slots 12, the portions of the blank in between the slots being weakened as illustrated at 13 whereby a tongue 14 is formed on the end of the blank. The tongue is adapted to be bent at substantially blank and the purpose thereo-f'is toprovide a means whereby the blankmay be inserted right angles to the within a package of cigarettes so that the 7 main portion of the blank is disposed be- The manner in which the article is associated with a package of cigarettes is more clearly illustrated in Figure 1. This construction enables the article to be placed in every package of cigarettes to be sold opened to enable the cigarette to be easily inserted and removed from the receptacle and without having the cigarette resting on any sharp edges. The provision of the tongue let furthermore enables the article tobe' supported vatan incline on any fiat surface such as a table, desk orthe like and furthercause a cigarette receptacle l5 to be disposed in such a position as to prevent the cigarette from falling out of the receptacle. 7
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that an articlejof manufacture has been provided which in its blank form may be placed in a package of cigarettes or cigars without causing any injury to the cigarettes or cigars and-may furthermore be easily and readily assembled to provide a cigarette or cigar receptacle and one which will be strong and durable.
WVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changesin the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of th invention and the scope of the appended claims. 7
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is V 1. An article of a single blank of material having longimanufacture comprising ends of said slots being disposed inwardly wherebya pair of longitudinally extending lips are formed, said blank having a sub-- stantially d-ovetailed slot formed therein transversely thereof, a substantially dovetailed lip formed by said slot, said lips normally lying in the same plane as the blank, theportions of the blank adjacent the lips being weakened to permit the lips to be bent up and provide a cigarette receptacle.
ELAn article of manufacture comprising a single blank of material having longitudinally extending slots formed therein, the
ends of said slots being disposedinwardly whereby a pair of longitudinally extending lips are formed, said blank having a substantially dove-tailed slot formed therein transversely thereof, a substantially dovetailed lip formed by said slot, said lips normally lying in the same plane as the blank, the portions of the blank adjacent .the lips being weakened to permit the lips to be bent up and provide a cigarette receptacle, and a tongue formed on the end of the blank and adapted to be bent downwardly at substantially right angles thereto to provide a supporting means for the cigarette receptacle. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
