This invention relates to a device tobe used in connection with ash trays or other ash re-* ceptacles, for extinguishing the fire on cigarettes or the like so that thevobjectionable 6 smoke from burning cigarette stumps, will be eliminated.
An important object of the invention isto provide a device of this character which may be positioned over one edge of an ash tray. 1 or receptacle and held in place by its frictional contact with thetray or receptacle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extinguisher of this character including flexible arms between which the lighted end of a cigarette may be passed to extinguish the fire. V 7 With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combiand claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the Figure 3 is a fragmental plan view il1ustrating a modified form of the invention.
Figure 4 is avsectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
K Figure 5 is a further modified form ofthe invention. f i p f Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates an ash tray which in the present showing is in the form of a dish, however it is to be understood that the device forming the subj ect matter of this invention is so constructed that it may be, V
' body port1on and is designed to rest on the 7 bottom of the tray, which is indicated by the readily positioned over an edge of an ash tray or ash receptacle, of any suitable construction. r
The extinguisher comprises a length of sheet metal having a portion of one end there of cut away defining fingers 6 which are bent 'the'length of sheet metal extendsdownward- 1y as at 8 where it contacts with the side of nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described drawings so that-they will"engage'thefedge f of the trayfor' receptacletowhich the device sls cu 1 v a I oppositeend; of the-lengthfofsl1eet 5'5 metal is cut" away throughout the greater portionjof the length Zoflthe sheet material providing lateralfingers 'Zwhich areb'ent so that the side faces thereof will be disposed in substantially parallel spaced relation with each other presenting wide surfaces between I which a cigarette may be passed to extinguish the fire thereof.
As clearly shown by'Figure 2, aportion of I the tray or receptacle to hold the fingers 7 spaced from the tray, so that the ashes from the cigaretteof which the fire is being extin-- guished, may fall'clear ofthe fingers 7 In the form of the invention as shown by Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings the device s comprises a length of sheet metal having one end thereof bent rearwardly in spaced relation with the body portion or length of sheet metal, as clearly shown by Figure 4, the free 'endofthis rearwardly bent portion which is indicated by the reference character 9, extends outwardly as at 10, so that it maybe readily positioned over one edge of asupporting tray.- V I The body portion of the device is indicated I by the reference character 11 which cooperates with the section 9 in clamping the side of.
the tray. Fingers 12 forma part of the dei I vice, and are substantiallywide presenting; wide surfaces to contact with the cigarette passed through the device, to extinguish the fire thereof. v
These fingers '12 curve slightly outwardly so that they will release the cigarette held therein when another cigarette'is forced between the fingers;
A tongue 13 extends forwardly from the W As shown by Figure 5, the'cigarette fireex-i tinguisher is constructed for use in connection with match boxes, the match box being indicated by the reference character 15 and the cigarette fire extinguisher being indicated by the reference character 16. The cigarette fire extinguisher in the form of the invention is provided with a substantially long 17 which is spaced from the fingers 18 and disposed in parallel relation with the rear edges thereof, so that the fingers 16 will be supported adjacent to the side of the match box and parallel therewith.
I claim: A cigarette fire extinguisher comprising a body portion formed of a length of sheet metal having a downwardly extended por-- tion to overlie theedge of an ash tray, gripping fingers formed on the body portion and adapted to grip theedge of the tray onwhich 20 the device is positioned, yieldable "fingers forming a part of the body portion, the yieldable fin ers bein disposed'in spaced relaer, and the outer edges of tion with each 0t the yieldable fingers being free and exposed 2 to permit a cigarette to be drawn between the fingers throughout the lengths of the fin ers. V
n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed'my si' nature.
