Description

Patented Apr. 27, 1926.
oscan A. c. LUND, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
' suoxnas ARTICLE.
Application filed October 10,1921- Serial No. 506,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OscAR A. G. Leanna subject of the King of Sweden, reslding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to a novel article of manufacture for smokers use; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of de-' vice for snuifing out smoldering cigarette butts.
The use of cigarettes, and especially of those kinds of cigarettes with respect to which combustion is self-sustained once it is initiated, entails the annoyance of disposing. of the still burning. unconsumed butts of the same. Usually the smoldering cigarette butt is laid down or cast aside,
with the result that its continuing combustion-is not only a-dangerous fire menace, and in any event the cause of unsightly disfigurement by the scorching or charring of the object upon which it is laid or the place upon which it is cast, but it is also the cause of a very obnoxious and malodorous reek or fume which is decidedly disagreeable, especially in a closed room. The careful smoker, to avoid these objectionable occurrences, will frequently attempt to stop combustion of the cigarette by grinding or rubbing its burning end upon a flat surface, and this practice, although commendable, does not operate in an entirely satisfactory manner, since it tends to crumble up the cigarette, detachin therefrom burning portions of tobacco an paper which will, for an appreciable time, give oif the malodorous reek or fume it is so desirable to avoid.
It is the object of this invention to provide a device to which the burning end of a cigarette butt may be applied, and which will operate to immediately snufl out its combustion; the said device requiring but'a" simple downward pressure of the burning end of the cigarette into' the same to assure a quick and complete extinguishment thereofby reason of the fact that the device constructed to shut off access of oxygen to the burning tobacco and paper when the cigarette is brought into contact therewith.- undamentally, my invention has for its pr1nc1pal object to provide a cigarette butt snufiing device which comprises essentially the provision of ansnuffing receptacle or trough having its inside opposed surfaces downwardly and inwardly inclined to converge toward their lower ends at an acute angle, thus forming an acute substantially V-shaped receiving cavity. The snufling device thus charactcrized may find several mechanical embodiments, i. e., it may be made as an individual article in various designs and ofvarious materials, or it may be constructed in combination with other smokersconveniences;for example, it ma be combined in various ways: with mate 1 stands, ash trays, humidors, cigarettecases, or the like.
Other objects of my invention, not here more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed de-. scription of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the p g accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the novel 'snufling device, per se, in one embodiment or form adapting it for manufacture out of sheet metal; and Figure 2 is another. perspective view of the novel snufling device, per se, in another embodiment or form adapting it for manufacture out of cast metal, porcelain or molded material. 4
Figure 3 is a perspective-view of the novelsnufling device in combination with an ash-tray; and Figure 4 is a detail transverse section of the arrangement shown in said Figure 3, and further illustrating the manner of operatively applying a burning Y cigarette butt to the snufiing device.
'Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above-described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to Figure 1, the principles v of my invention are therein shown as embodied in a structure capable of being wrought out of sheet metal. This struc- 'ture comprises a body of sheet metal '1 having its end portions bent inwardly and doubled over the body, as at 2 to rovide a base, the free terminal portions 3 0 said end portions being turned upwardly and inclined outwardly from the perpendicular,
its
thus providing intermediate the portions 3 so arranged, an acute substantially V-shaped receiving cavity 4:, having its respective inside opposed surfaces downwardly and inwardly inclined to converge toward their lower edges. It will be understood, however, that the essential characteristic acute V-shaped receiving cavity 4, may be formed out of sheet metal in many specifically different ways, and consequently, as to the specific character of bending and shaping by which the sheet metal structure shown in Figure 1 derives the essential snutfing cavity 4:, said structure must be considered as merely-illustrative of one of many ways of obtaining said cavity 4. f
Referring now to Figure 2, the principles of my invention are therein shown as embodied in a structure capable of being cast frornmetal, or molded from porcelain, glass or other suitable plastic material. This structure com rises a main body or block 5, having at lts ends, or at other suitable locations, perforate ears 6. Said body is provided in its upper portion with an acute substantially 'V-shaped receiving cavity or channel 7, having its respective inside opposed surfaces downwardly and inwardly inclined to converge toward their lower ed es.
Tn both Figures 1 and 2 the snufl'ing device is shown as an individual entity subject to be placed on or secured to a table, chair orother article, or placed in any suitable location. i
In Figures 3 and 4 I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention as combined with an ash tray, to demonstrate the fact that the snufiing device may be combined with and form a part of another smokers convenience, whether the same be an ash tray, match stand, humidor, cigarette case or what not.
Referring more particularly to said Figures 3 and 4:, the reference character 8 indicates as ash-tray body of suitable design. Mounted within said ash-tray 8 at a convenient location, and suitably connected therewith as an integral part thereof or.
otherwise is an upright block or body portion 9 which is provided in its upper portion with an acute substantially V-shaped receiving cavity 'or channel 10, having its respective inside opposed surfaces downwardly and inwardly inclined to converge toward their lower edges.
The manner in which the snufiing device is utilized to extinguish a smoldering cigarette butt is illustrated in Figure 4:, and may be ex lained as follows i The smo er having finished with a cigarette, grasps the butt 11, and holding the same substantially perpendicular with 'thesmoldering end 12 downward, thrusts the same into the V-shaped receiving cavity of' the combustion thereof is stopped and the cigarette is at once extinguished without any scattering or breaking off of portions of burnmg tobacco. or paper, and consequentl all generation of reek orfumes is stoppe The cigarette butt being extinguished, in the rapid and simple manner described, may be withdrawn from the V-shaped receiving cavity of the snufling device, and safely laid aside without risk of starting a fire, or without the further giving off of objectionable reek or fumes.
From the above it will be clearly understood that although the snufling device is or a very simple mechanical character, it is, nevertheless, a very efiicient device for the purposes in view. Furthermore, it will also be understood, that so long as the essential characteristic element comprised in the acute substantially V-shaped receiving cavity is attained the specific mechanical structure maybe varied in many ways and carried out with any suitable material, either as to they snufling device per se, or as to the snufiing device as combined with any other smokers convenience or article.
I claim 1. A device of the kind described, comprising an elongated body provided with a V-sha ed channel extending longitudinally theret rou h with its open side at the top of said he y, and at least one end of said channelbeing open at an end of said body to permit endwise ejection of refuse from said channel.
2. The combination with an ash-tray body of a cigarette snufiing device comprising an elongated member connected with said ashtray body so as to rise from the bottom thereof, said elongated member being provided in .its topside with a V-shaped channel extending longitudinally therethrough, and at least one end of said channel being open toward the interiorof said ashtray body to permit endwise ejection of refuse'from said channel into the interior of said ash-tray body.
In'testimony, that I claim the invention set-forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of October, 1921.
OSCAR-A. 0. LUND.
