Description

. CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER AND ASH TRAY Filed Sept. 2, 1955 2,867,221 CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER AND ASH TRAY I Frank S Farley, Atlantic City; N. J. Application September 2; 195i Serial No. 532,182
2 Claims. (Cl. 131-256) This invention relates to devices particularly "adapted for use in combination with ash trays for extinguishing lighted cigarettes, cigars, and the like, and in particular, a comparatively small cup shape receptacle having a snuifer or extinguishing element in the upper part thereof where by with water in the receptacle means is provided for extinguishing a cigarette or the like.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a yielding element in combination with moisture in a snutfer whereby upon pressing a lighted cigarette, cigar, or the like therein, moisture in the device extinguishes all burning parts so that the possibility of sparks or partly burning cigarettes or the like being blown from an ash tray is substantially eliminated.
In numerous instances attempts are made to snuff cigarettes and deposit the butts in an ash tray, and in some instances, circulation of air over the ash tray causes the cigarette to continue to burn and fires are started as the result of such burning parts or butts being blown from the ash tray. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates the use of moisture in combination with an ash tray whereby upon snufiing the cigarette butt in the moisture all fire or burning parts are completely extinguished thereby.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a moisture containing cup adapted to be used in combination with an ash tray or the like whereby the cup is positioned to be continuously supplied with moisture and is also positioned whereby burning cigarette butts and the like may readily be pressed thereinto for bringing the burning parts thereof into contact with the moisture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a moisture containing cigarette extinguisher that is adapted to be used in combination with an ash tray.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher for use in combination with ash trays and the like wherein cigarette butts are pressed into moisture and in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention embodies a cylindrical casing having a closed lower end with a closure at the upper end of the casing retained in position with a collar, and means for retaining the casing in position in an ash tray or the like.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of a cigarette extinguishing ash tray wherein a cup shape receptacle is integral with the body of an ash tray.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the tray showing a burning cigarette in a recess at one side and also a cigarette butt held by a thumb and forefinger in the position in which the butt is being snuffed out in broken lines.
Figure 3 is a partial cross section similar to that shown in Figure 2 showing an exploded view with a collar and spring plate positioned above the cylindrical receptacle and with part of the ash tray broken away.
United States Patent 'ice 2,867,221 Patented Jan. 6, 1959 2. H Figure 4 is a side' elevational view showing the spring flap of the fluid receptacle shown iii Figure 2'; I
Figure 5 isa front elevational view of the spring flap shown in Figure 4. g
Figure 6 is a sectional view through the spring niein'ber taken on line 66 of Figure 4 looking upwardly toward the under side of the springflap. I
Figure 7 is a plan view of the spring flap;
Figiiie. 8' is a side elevational view illustrating. amodification wherein a small fluid cup or container is provided with a spring clip, similar to a pencil or pen clip whereby the container may be supported on the edge of a pocket or the like.
Figure 9 is a cross section through the container shown in Figure 8 being'taken on line 9-9 thereof.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved cigarette extinguishing receptacle of this invention, includes, an ash tray 47 having a rim 48 provided with a centrally disposed cylindrical wall 49 forming a chamber 50 and the upper edge of the wall 49 being provided with a threaded neck 51 on which a collar 52 is threaded. The collar 52 is provided with a centrally disposed opening 53 and the opening is substantially closed with a spring plate 54 on the upper end of an arcuate vertically disposed upright member 55 which is clamped against the inner surface of the base of the chamber 50 by the collar 52. The upright member 55 is curved to correspond with the interior of the wall 49 whereby the device is nested in the chamber 50, as shown in Figure 2. The edges of the spring plate 54 adjacent the sides of the upright are formed with slots 56 and 57 to provide resiliency in the plate whereby upons pressing downwardly upon the plate with a cigarette butt, as shown in Figure 2, the plate bends downwardly permitting contact of the burning ashes of the cigarette with water or other liquid in the chamber 50 The rim 48 of the ash tray 47 is provided with inclined recesses 58 for receiving cigarettes and, the recesses are positioned whereby the burning ends of the cigarettes are spaced from the centrally disposed wall 49.
In the design illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, the cup shape receptacle 59 having a spring clip 60 thereon is illustrated, the clip 60 extending from a band 61 extending around a threaded sleeve 62 of a collar 63 with the collar threaded on a portion 64 at the upper edge of the wall of the receptacle. The receptacle is provided with a base 65 and a spring plate 66 which extends from an arcuate upright 67, similar to the upright 55.
With the parts arranged in this manner, the spring clip 60 is adapted to be snapped over the edge of a pocket, belt, handbag, or part of a motor vehicle and with water or other liquid in the receptacle or container butts of cigarettes may readily be snuffed or extinguished by pressing downwardly upon the plate 66 until the end of the cigarette or butt is immersed in the water.
It will be understood that other modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cigar and cigarette extinguisher, the combination which comprises a cup-like receptacle including a cylindrical wall closed at the lower end and having a threaded nipple on the upper end, a collar having an opening therethrough threaded on the nipple of the receptacle, an upright member having an arcuate in cross section, positioned in one side of the receptacle and clamped against the inner surface of the base of the receptacle by the collar for retaining the upright member in position, and a spring plate integral with the upright member and extending from the upper end thereof providing a closure for the opening through the collar and positioned to be depressed by the action of snufling a cigarette thereon whereby the cigarette passes into liquid in the receptacle. I s 1. 1.
2. A cigar and cigarette extinguisher as described in claim 1 in which slots are provided in, the upper nd 'of the upright member and in the edges thereofto facilitate depressing .the spring plate. l j i References Cited in the 111115 patent UNITED STATES PATENTS D. 101,312 Ridewo'od 1 Sept. 22, 1936 Jones July 2, 1872 Brown Feb. 9, 1892 Kaul Dec. 14, 1926 Pringle Oct. 20, 1931 Mainiere Apr. 15, 1941 Klekot May 23, 1950 Page et al.
