3 Claims. 1
This inven ion relates to an ash tray type of smoking devices.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combined ash tray and cigarette holder whereby the ashes dropping from the cigarette will be deposited in an ash tray and rendered harmless to any clothing orotherinfiammable material in the locality where the smoking is being done and wherein the smoking of cigarettes in bed will be rendered less hazardous.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in a combined ash tray and smoking device, means whereby as the cigarette approaches the outlet to the ash tray the cigarette will be automatically extinguished and wherein should the ash tray become inverted upon an inflammable surface the tray will serve as a hood or cover to smother the ashes and in that way prevent a fire from starting.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combined ash tray and cigarette holder which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For still further objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed de cription taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention and showing the same in use by the smoker.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, in elevation, of the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 and showing the interior of the ash tray and the latch for retaining the cigarette in the wall opening of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view, in perspective, and looking into the ash tray and upon the latch retainer.
Referring now particularly to Fi s. 1, 2 and 3, i represents a cup shaped ash receptacle which has considerable depth and has an opening 2 in its side wall through which a c garet e is eX- tended. This opening is preferably provided with a metal ring 2'. Above this opening 2 is a latch 3 having an elongated slot 4 and a handle portion 5. The latch 3 is pivoted on a pin 6 fixed in the wall of the receptacle. The cigarette l is extended through the opening 2 and is lighted. The receptacle then serves as a holder by which the cigarette can be brought to the mouth of the smoker as illustrated in Fig. 1. The latch 3 is adapted to drop slightly below the top of the opening 2 so as to indent the cigarette slightly and tilt the same so that as the cigarette burns up it will be properly snuffed. The metal ring 2 will cause heat to be extracted from the cigarette as the lighted end approaches the ring. Inasmuch as the ring is tilted, the hot end of the cigarette will first strike the lower part of the ring and the heat will rise in the ring and the cigarette be extinguished before it has burned under the latch whereby the latch will continue to have a grip upon the cigarette sufiicient to keep it on the receptacle. A stop pin 4' extends into the opening 4 and will limit both the upward and downward movement of the latch. The curvature in the bottom of the latch 3 is shown at 3'. It should be apparent that the ashes will drop into the receptacle and hence be prevented from dropping upon clothing or other inflammable material. Thus, there has been provided a device by which the smoker can safely smoke in bed. Should he drop the ash tray and it become inverted the same will serve as a cover over the lighted cigarette and will prevent oxygen or air from getting at the cigarette so as to kindle a flame. In other words the inverted ash tray will cause the cigarette to be smothered and extinguished when the ash tray falls in an inverted manner upon clothing.
While various change may be m de in the detail construction it shall be understood that such cha ges shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A combined ash tray and cigarette holder comprising a receptacle having an opening therein adapted to receive the mouth end of a cigarette, said receptacle being adapted to surround the lighted end of the cigarette so as to confine the cigarette within the same, a heat conducting portion about the opening adapted to h ve close fittin arran ement with the cigaret e, and means associated with the receptacle to ti t the c garette so that the hot end of the c garette first comes into contact with said heat conducting portion at its lower p rt, said conducting portion being of less length than the diameter of the cigarette and of its internal diameter whereby to permit the cigarette to be tilted, sa d means to tilt the cigarette lying on the interior of the receptacle.
2. A combined ash tray and cigarette holder comprising a receptacle having an opening therein adapted to receive the mouth end of a cigarette, said receptacle being adapted to surround the entire lighted end of the cigarette so as to confine the cigarette within the same, a heat conducting ring for retaining the cigarette within the openin and a latch having a curved. engaging edge adapted to partially surround the cigarette and to tilt the same into the receptacle, whereby the hot end of the cigarette will first arrive at the underside of the ring and will be extinguished from the bottom to thereby leave the latch in engagement with the top of the cigarette to retain it in the ring and on the receptacle when the cigarette has burned to the lower edge of the ring, said receptacle being of circular formation and said latch conforming to the shape of the interior wall face of the receptacle.
3. A combined ash tray and cigarette holder comprising a receptacle having an opening therein adapted to receive the mouth end of a cigarette, said receptacle being adapted to surround the entire lighted end of the cigarette so as'to i confine the cigarette within the same, and heat conducting ring for retaining the cigarette with REFERENCES I CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
