to a device for holding matches, ashes and cigars or cigarettes.
The primary object of the invention is to 1 provide a simple and ei'licient device which may be readily made and which is adapted to hold matches or other devices Within the same, and which has a cover adapted to hold and support 'a cigar or cigarette in such a way that the ashes therefrom will fall within the receptacle through an opening provided therefor, and that the ashes deposited within the receptacle will be inclosed from view and protected so as to be less likely to be distributed over other articles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily cast or made of glass, porcelain, or similar material,
which is attractive in appearance and which may be made in various shapes and sizes.
IYith these and other objects in view, the
invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and willthen be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one (form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a device similar to Figs. 1 to 3 except that the cover is adapted to support two cigars or cigarettes instead of one; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a similar device except that it is somewhat larger than that shown in the other figures and may support three cigars or cigarettes.
The device may be of any desired form and made of any suitable material.
As shown in Figs. 1 to '3 the body 10 is made of glass, porcelain, or similar material,
and is provided with a ocket or recess 11 at one side thereof, whic is adapted to hold matches or similar articles, and along the side of said pocket is a flange 12 having a roughened surface forming a scratching means for the matches. The .body 10 is provided with dove-tail grooves 13 in the marginal flange 14, and adapted to fit these grooves is a cover or lid 15 which has its edges beveled to fit the grooves 13 and be slidingly held to the body portion. The cover 15 is provided with a recess or groove 16 which is adapted to hold a cigar or cigarette or similar article, and adjacent to the groove or recess 16 is an opening 17 through the cover to permit the as es from the cigar or cigarette to pass within the body portion or receptacle 10, and to receive the ashes as they are deposited in the receptacle, the lat-' ter is rovided with a pocket 18 formed by the ang of the body portion. To remove matches the cover 15 may be forced outward and when re tored to the position necessary to cover the body portion or receptacle, the ashes as they fall from the cigar or cigarette, when laced in the groove 16, will pass throu h the opening 17 into the pocket 18 provided therefor. By this means the ar- 'ticle serves several pur osesand avoids the objectional feature of t e ashes being blown around and about the room, and at the same time provides a convenient holder for cigarettes or cigars.
In Fig. 4 the device is substantially the same as shown in Fi s. 1 to 3 except that the cover 19 is provider with two openings 20, and two grooves or recesses 21 for cigars or ci arettes instead of one.
ig. 5 is substantially the same as the other figures only lar er, and the cover 22 thereof is provided wit a plurality of openings 23 and a plurality of recesses 24 for the cigarettes or cigars, and within the body 25 thereof is arranged a pocket 26 for the matches, a scratching surface 27 adjacent to the pocket 26, and with an ash-receiving pocket 28 which is adapted to receive the ashes from the cigars ,or cigarettes when placed in the grooves or recesses 24 of the cover 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are provided whereby an article for the use of smokers may be made to hold matches within the body portion thereof, and have means to support ci ars or cigarettes in such a way that the as es as they fall from themigars or cigarettes will bedeposited within thermoptacle and be held thereby;. that said device ive in appearance; and that said device may be made to hold one or a plurality of objects.
