UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE I. ALLEN, OF WILSON, NORTH CARQLIINA.
SMOKERS DEVICE.
Application filed llllarch 21, 1924. Serial No. 700,932.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I, ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the county of Wilson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device to be used by smokers.
An important object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, provided with means for holding a'cigar or cigarette, means for receiving the ashes, and means for holding a box of matches.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the above mentioned character, having means whereby it may be readily attached to a part of a desk, table or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, so constructed that the same may be stamped from a single sheet of metal or the like, whereby it may be produced quickly and cheaply.
A- further object of the invention is to provide a device ofthe above mentioned character having means for holding an advertising display.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in-which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is an elevation of the rear end of the device, f
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the device is formed,
' Figure 4 is a perspective view of a device embodying a second form of the'invention. Figure 5 is a plan view/of the blank, parts broken away, from which the second form of the device is made,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a device embodying a'third form of the invention,
and,
Figure 7 is a plan view of the blank from which the third form of the device is produced, parts being broken away,
j Figure 8 is a side elevationof the same device shown in Figurel, showing the same applied to a desk in a different manner.
Attention is first called to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, wherein is illustrated the first form of the invention. In Figure 3, the numeral 10 designates a blank, which is stamped from a single sheet of metal, card board, or any other suitable material. This integral blank embodies a bottom portion 11, the front end of which is preferably rounded, as indicated at 12. The numeral 13 designates a front portion, formed integral with the body portion 11 and foldable thereon upon a line 14. The bottom portion 11 is preferably provided with slots 15, for the reception of tongues 16 integral with the front portion 13. The bottom portion 11 is also provided with forwardly extending tongues 17 for a purpose to be described. Formed integral with the ends of the bottom portion 11 and foldable thereon upon' lines 18, are end portions 19, provided at their forward ends with slots 20, for the reception of tongues 21, carried by the front portion .13, as shown. Formed integral with the bottom portion 11 is a back portion 22, foldable thereon upon the lines 23. This back portion is provided at its ends with ton nos 24, to enter slots 25 formed in the en portions 19. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the front portion 14, end portions 19, and back portion 22 are bent upwardly with respect to the bottom portion 11 and are disposed at a right angle thereto, the several portions being secured together by means of the tongues formed thereon, which are inserted through the corresponding slots and then bent back. Theseparts thus assembled produce an ash receiving tray or ines 28, and these tongues project forwardly beyond the ends of the front portion 13, and are adapted to engage over the end of an advertising card or display 29 which may rest upon the tongues 17 which are preferably bent upwardly.
Formed integral with the back portion 22, and foldable upon a transverse line 30, is a support or clamp portion 31, having extensions 32, foldable upwardly upon lines 33. The extension 32 to the right is equipped with'tongues 34. The extension 32 to the left is integral with a cigar or cigarette holding tray section 35, foldable'upon line 36. This last named section is foldable at its end upon a line 37, producing an extension 38, having slots 39, to receive the tongues 34. The section 35 is transversely corrugated providing depressions 40, extending longitudinally of the device, for holding cigars or cigarettes. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the back portion 22 projects above the ends 19 of the receptacle, and the support portion 31 is horizontally arranged at a right angle to this back portion. The tray portion 35 extends above the clamp portion 31, in parallel relation thereto, with the extensions 32 vertically arranged, and the extension 38 bent downwardly to engage upon the outer side of the extension 32 to the left, with the tongues 34 entering the slots v39, which tongues are subsequently bent back. The ciga'r or cigarette tray portion is therefore arranged at the rear end of the ash receptacle so that the ashes may be readily caught within such receptacle.
The back portion 22 carries strips 40, at the ends thereof which are integral with the same, such strips being foldable u on lines 41. These. strips are folded inwar ly upon the rear face of the back portion 22, and may be held in contact therewith by tongues 42 stamped from, the back portion, which tongues are passed through slots 43, and then bent back. The strips 40 are also foldable upon transverse lines 44, to provide knuckles 45, disposed at a right angle to the back portion 22, and apertured to pivotally receive the arm 46 of a clamp or clamping frame 47, which is shown as rectangular. A torsional coil spring 48 surrounds the arm 46, with one end thereof engaging the clamp 47 and the other end the bottom portion 11. It is thus'seen that the support or clamp portion 31 may be arranged upon the top of a portion of a desk, with the spring clamp '47 beneath such portion, thereby securely holding the device in place. It is obvious that the device may be mounted upon any other suitable object, such as a table, chair or the like.
The numeral 49 designates a portion, in tegral with the support or clam portion 31, and foldable at a right angle t ereto, upon the line 50. The portion 41 is foldable upon lines 51, producing a horizontal intermediate portion 52 and a'depending outer side or jaw 53 arranged opposite the inner jaw 54. The top portion 52 has an opening 55 'to receive th 10 wer end of a box of matches.
/ As clearly shown in Figure 1, the portion 49, when folded or bent produces an inverted U-shaped member, projecting above the tray 40. Then the device is applied to device to the drawer of a desk or the like, in
which event the member 56 is inserted over the upper edge'of the front of the drawer.
The drawer may be closed without removing the device.
'In Figures 4 and 5 I have illustrated a slight modification of the device. All parts of the device are identical with that of the first form of the device, up to the portion 49, Figure 3, which portion is omitted. In Figures 4 and 5 a transverse strip'57 is formed integral with the portion 31, at its center, as indicated at 58, with slits 59 separating the outer portions of this strip from the portion 10. The ends of the strip 57 are bent upwardly upon lines 60 forming vertical arms 61 which are bent upon lines 62, forming horizontal extensions 63 which may be suitably secured together. These parts thus bent form' a rectangular frame over which the outer section of the match box may be inserted. The same spring actuated clamp 47 is of course employed.
In Figures 6 and 71 have illustrated a third modification of the device. This device is identical with the first form of the invention, as shown in Figure'3, up to the portion 31, and this portion with all elements carried thereby are omitted. The back portion 22 has an upper extension portion 65 formed integral therewith, and this extension portion is provided at its upper end with a lip 66, foldable downwardly upon a line 67 to occupy a position at the rear of the same. This lip isprovided with a key hole slot 68, for the receptacle of a tack or the like from which the device is suspended.- Formed integral with the portion 65 are wing portions 69, foldable in a forwardly direction upon lines 70, and these wing portions are foldable upon lines 71 providing side members 72 of" a match box holdingcage. The sides 72 are foldable upon lines 73 providing flanges 74. The sides 72 have openings 75 through which a match may be struck.- Support flanges 76 are bent upon the lower ends of the sides 72. It is obvious that a box of matches is held within the cage between the sides 7 2. i In view of the foregoing description it is thought that the use of the devices is obvious, and no further descriptionv is deemed obvious.
While I have illustrated the several parts of the device as secured together by tongues and slots, the invention is not necessarily restricted to this manner of connection, as other means may be employed, such as solder, or clamp joints.
It is to be understood that" the forms of my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit joined claims.
